ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS
(Missing data may suitably assumed)
1. a) 5 liters of NH3 at 303K and 21 kPa is neutralized by 140ml solution of H2SO4.
Determine the normality of the acid.
b) Spend acid from a fertilizer plant has the following composition by weight.
H2SO4 -20%, NH4HSO4 -45%, H2O – 30%, Organic Compounds – 5%.
Calculate the total acid content of the spend acid in terms of H 2SO4 after adding the
acid content chemically bound in ammonium hydrogen sulphate.
c) An aqueous solution of sodium chloride is prepared by dissolving 2kg of NaCl in
80kg of water. Calculate mol% composition of solution.
d) The power required by an agitation in a tank is the function of following variables.
i) Diameter of the impeller, D
ii) RPM of the impeller, N
iii) Viscosity of the liquid, µ
iv) Density of the liquid, ρ
v) Acceleration due to gravity, g
From dimensional analysis obtain the relationship between power and variables.
The power consumption if found experimentally to be proportional to the square of
speed of rotation.

2. a) Calculate the volume occupied by 1gmol of water vapour at 9000C and 100 atm by
perfect gas law and Van der Waal’s equation. The Van der Waal’s constants of
water are:
.
a=5.404 & b=0.3049
b) A mixture of CH4 and C2H6 has average molecular weight 22.4. Find the mol% of
CH4 and C2H6 in the mixture.
c) In a vessel, 26.6 liters of NO2 at 0.789atm and 298K is allowed to stand until
equilibrium is reached. At equilibrium, the pressure is found to be 0.657atm.
Calculate the partial pressure of N2O4 in the final mixture.

3 a) Air at temperature of 600C. pressure of 745mmHg and a percentage humidity of
10.0 is supplied to a drier at a rate of 1500 m3/hr. Water is evaporated int the drier
at a rate of 25 kg/hr/ The air leaves at 350C. and 742mmHg.
Calculate:
i) The percentage humidity of air leaving the drier.
ii) Volume of wet air leaves the drier per hour.
b) Conditioned air at 760mmHg total pressure, 500C and at a humidity of 0.01 kg of
water per kg of dry air enters the drier. It leaves the drier at 760mmHg total
pressure and 500C with relative humidity 83%. Vapour pressure of water at 50 0C is
92.5mmHg. If 50 kg of water enters into the air stream per hour, calculate the rate

of dry air flowing through the drier.
c) Air at a temperature of 200C and a pressure of 0.987x105 N/m2 has a relative
humidity of 80%. Calculate the molal humidity of air and also calculate the molal
humidity of air if its temperature is reduced to 100C and its previous pressure is
increased to 2.38x105 N/m2 condensing out some of the water.

4 a) Corrosion rate of pipes in boiler be brought down by removing oxygen from
feed water using sodium sulfite. Calculate the kg of sodium sulfite required to
remove the oxygen from 4000 kiloliter of water containing 9 parts per million
(ppm). To ensure the complete removal of oxygen 25% excess sodium sulfite is
used.
b) A wet organic pigment containing 37.5% by wt. CCl 4 is to be dried to 7% by
weight (wet basis). The drier is to operate adiabatically with fresh and recycled air
entering the drier with 0.52kg CCl4/kg of dry air. This air leaves the drier at 0.915
kg CCl4 /kg of dry air. The capacity of the drier is 250kg bone dry solid per hour.
Calculate the ratio of recycle to fresh air.
c) A producer gas with composition by volume is as follows; CO-27.5%, CO 2-5.3%,
O2-0.7%, N2-66.5%. It is burned with 20% excess air. If the combustion 96%
complete calculate the composition by mole of the flue gas.
