Boeing $9.2B TX Trainer Win Built on Model Based Engineering & Production
Global Product Data Interoperability Summit | 2019

T-X was created using Boeing’s new model-based design and

engineering approach on NX, Teamcenter, Simcenter, Capital and
Fibersim
“We were competing against proven, in production aircraft, so we had
to do things differently if we were going to compete and have an aircraft
that was viable for that campaign,” said Paul Niewald, Boeing’s T-X
chief engineer
The model-based engineering approach saved time in many ways:
• Suppliers delivered parts fit precisely the first time to drop re-work
rate to 0.3%
• Assembly process took 80% fewer hours than an estimate of how
long it would take to build the aircraft under traditional processes
• Canopy transparencies assembly reduced from 6 weeks to 8 days
• Slicing of fuselage sections reduced from 24 hours to 30 min

Boeing’s winning bid for the T-X trainer contract came in at least $10 billion less than the U.S. Aviation Week Aerospace & Defense Daily Report “Inside Boeing’s Secret
Air Force’s original estimate
Formula To Win T-X ” May 17, 2019

The Requirements (from the user perspective!)
Global Product Data Interoperability Summit | 2019

• Changes to current practices should be minimal and incremental

• Every participant should have transparent access
• No changes should go unaddressed
• Incomplete work should be immediately noticeable
• Shared resources should be allocated effectively
• No work should be done twice (or more!)
• Every participant should access information in a familiar view
• Reporting upon what has been done should be no extra work
