To help you grow in content and in reasoning as a future educator is still

our/my aim. Let us rise above this pandemic. At CPSU, we learn as one.

GEC. 8- ETHICS
The Ethical Dimension of Human Existence
Ethics, generally speaking, is about matters such as the good thing that we should
pursue and the bad thing that we should avoid; the right ways in which we could or should act
and the wrong ways of acting. It is about what is acceptable and unacceptable in human
behavior. It may involve obligations that we are expected to fulfill, prohibitions that we are
required to respect, or ideals that we are encouraged to meet. Ethics as a subject for us to study
is about determining the grounds or bases for a specific set of values with particular and special
significance to human life.
In this unit, we will consider the scope of the more specific type of valuations that we
would refer to as ethical dimension of human life, and then we will clarify some of the terms that
will us in our thinking of ethics, and finally we will confront some ways by which thinking about
ethics can be forestalled if one is not careful.
In this unit, you are expected to:
1. identify the ethical aspect of human life and the scope of ethical thinking;
2. define and explain the terms that are relevant to ethical thinking; and
3. evaluate the difficulties that are involved in maintaining the certain commonly held
notions on ethics.

Friendly Reminders: Personal reasoning is required for these activity. Please

substantiate your answers with concepts, theories, or ideas learned in your previous
lesson through collaborative activities and assignments provided in your learning
module. When you answer, please put your heart into it. Do not copy and paste from the
internet. Practice answering with a succinct idea.

Topic: Brotherhood or Violence?

THINK

Let us start with a very real issue not uncommon in our academic setting: that of
fraternity hazing.

In august 2007, newspapers reported what seemed to bet another sad incident of
fraternity violence. Cris Anthony Mendez, a twenty years old student of the university of
the Philippines (UP), was rushed to the hospital in the early morning hour, unconscious,
with large bruises on his chest, back, and legs, he passed away that morning, and the
sub sequent autopsy report strongly suggests that his physical injuries were most
probably the result of “hazing’’ (the term colloquially used to refer to initiation rites in
which neophytes may be subjected to various forms of physical abused). What exactly
happened remains an open question, as none of those who were with him that night
come forward to shed light on what exactly had transpired. Needless to say, none of
them come forward to assume responsibility for the death of Cris.
Even as the leaders of the sigma rho fraternity publicly denounced the death of
Christ, those members of theirs who had been with him that night vanished, avoiding
and refusing to cooperate with legal authorities. UP students and general public
clamored for justice. In the move that surprised the students body, the UP chancellor
called the fraternities to justify their continued existence. Meanwhile, the case of tragic
death of Cris Anthony Mendez was left unresolved. It remains that way up to this day.

No one knows just what exactly happened. No changes have been filed, no
definitive testimony has been fourth coming. But there is more to this for us just a
criminal mystery.

Pondering on the death of Cris, we may found ourselves asking questions such
as, ’what is the value of one life?” what exactly were the wrongs done to Cris by his so-
called fraternity brothers”, or perhaps even, is there any good to fraternities? These
questions that concern good and bad or right or wrong- and these are questions
concerning value- are the kind of question that we deal with in the ethics.

EXPERIENCE
We can expand the discussion of violence in schools from the issue of fraternity
hazing to the wider problem of bullying.

1. What forms of bullying have you observed?

2. Have you ever been a victim of bullying?

3. Do you think there is any way that one can justify bullying?

ASSESS
Consider the following questions: 5pts each

1. in the story reported, what wrong things done are you able to identify?

2. What do you know about the possible forms – and consequences –of
hazing?

3. Discuss with your classmates: what are the possible pros and cons-
positive and negative aspects-of holding on fraternities and their
traditions? which aspects seems to carry the greater weight or
importance?
4. Consider: did you and your classmates agree or disagree with each other
about your answer in items number 3 above? On which points did you
agree and on which points did you disagree?

CHALLENGE
Various organization-not only fraternities and sororities, but also clubs and
communities-may require certain qualifications for being considered, go through a
certain process for being admitted, as well as have some from rites of initiation. What
do you know of these as practiced in your own school? When are these
acceptable, and are there any instances in which you find a practice to be an
acceptable? Why? In addition, we had earlier said that we can expand our discussion
from hazing more broadly to bullying. What do you think are the different forms of
bullying that the students right now have to confront? Could this really be a good
thing, or is it definitely a bad thing? What are your reasons for your answer?

HARNESS
Outside the world of student life, the real world “out there” of work and commerce and
adult responsibilities can also be a place of intimidation, of coercion, of violence, also a
place of bullying and hazing. What do you think are active measures an individual
person may take to protect himself or herself against this kind of
unpleasantness, and what changes should we try the encourage in society to
help address this problem?
