Right On! 2 – Test 6A (Module 6)

Reading
L. Read the text and for questions (1-5), choose the correct answer (A, B, or C).

In December, 2004, my family and I were on a beach holiday in Thailand. Our

hotel was in a village on the coast, so I swam in the sea every day and even tried
kite surfing.
On our fourth morning there, we were having breakfast in the hotel restaurant
when, suddenly, our waiter pointed at something outside. For some strange
reason, the sea was moving out very quickly – so that soon there was just wet
sand for around 50 metres! My sister was taking pictures of the beach when an
American tourist ran over to our table. “We’ve got to get out of here!” she shouted.
She explained that an earthquake had happened on the ocean floor and a
tsunami was coming towards the coast!
The hotel manager led us outside and up a hill behind the hotel. Some guests and
staff had already gathered there, and in minutes, the waves arrived. We all looked
down as they crashed against the hotel. Soon, it was totally destroyed.
After a while, helicopters came to take us to a football stadium inland. We stayed
there overnight, and the next morning we flew back to England. We felt
exhausted, but very relieved to be safe. It was a scary experience that I’ll never
forget.

1 What is the writer’s main purpose?

A to narrate an experience B to complain about a hotel C to explain how tsunamis start

2 How did the writer feel when the sea moved out?
A excited B relieved C confused

3 Who told the writer to get away from the hotel?

A a waiter B a tourist C the hotel manager

4 When the writer reached the top of the hill

A he met other people there. B he wanted to return to the hotel.
C the tsunami had already hit the coast.

5 What could be another suitable title for the story?

A Lost at Sea B A Dream Holiday C Lucky to Survive
