that describe themselves using
the letters of their first name.
Ex.:

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson.

Have the pupils share their descriptions about themselves using the
letters of their first name. Allow them to write it on the board.

C. Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson

Tell the children to write a sentence using any of the words that they have
given.
Ex.:
Sir Edward was wearing a demure gray suit.
The local government officials were enthusiastic supporters of the president.
My brother is a real workaholic who almost never takes time off.

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1

Have them read the following sentences. Observe how the people,
objects and ideas are being compared.
1. The recent typhoon was the strongest to hit the country.
2. The water was higher than it was before because the dams had
overflowed.
3. We are more fortunate than the other people because we are not affected
by such calamities.
4. I wanted to help the poor victims in the best way I could.
5. Doing volunteer work is more productive and is better than doing nothing.

Adjectives in the sentences are used in different forms to how comparison.


Strongest is used in sentence 1 to compare a particular typhoon with other
typhoons. More fortunate in sentence 3 is used to compare the people who were

not affected by the typhoon to those who had been; while higher in sentence
compares the flood water at the present with the previous experience. More
productive in sentence 5 is used to compare volunteering with doing nothing.
Poor in sentence 1 is plainly modifying victims and no comparison is made.

The adjectives poor, higher, more fortunate, more productive, and strongest
show the three degrees of comparison.

E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2

Discuss to the class the three degrees of Comparison of Adjectives


1. Positive – No comparison is made or shown.
Examples:
They are rich.
I am poor.
2. Comparative – Two persons or things are being compared, and one of the
two is higher or lower in degree.
Examples:
They are richer than I.
I am poorer now than when I had a job.
3. Superlative – Three or more persons or things are being compared, and on
of them is the highest or lowest in degree.
Examples:
Of my three sisters, Dolly is the most generous.
She is the best sister in the world.

How are comparisons indicated?


1. By adding –er or –est to the most adjectives of one or two syllables
Examples:
Positive Comparative Superlative
kind kinder kindest
humble humbler humblest
2. By adding more and most or less and least to adjectives of three or more
syllables
Examples:
studious more studious most studious
intelligent less intelligent least intelligent
3. By changing the form of irregular adjectives
Examples:
little less least
bad/ill worse worst
good/well better best
far farther/further farthest/furthest
many/much more most
late later last/latest
4. By using an adjective with the word as to form a phrase that would suggest
equality or sameness.
Examples:
My sister is as beautiful as my mother.
That speeding car is as fast as the train.
