THE ENLIGHTENMENT MOVEMENT:(1660_1798)

 Another names:
It is also known as neo classical age,The age of reason,Age of satire, Augustan age.

 Introduction:
The term" enlightenment " was popularized in western world through the 19th century
translations of Max Müllar.

The word enlightenment mean "the state of having knowledge or understanding".

This movement began in late 17th century and ended in 18th century.

It is called neoclassical age, because in this age writers followed the criticism of ancient
writers like Homer,Virgil, Aristotle and Horace.

The Enlightenment age,also known as the age of reason, because it was an intellectual and
cultural movement that emphasized logic and reason.

 Purpose:
Using the power of press enlightenment thinkers like John Locke, Isaac Newton and Voltaire
questioned accepted knowledge and spread new ideas about openness, investigation and
religious tolerance, throughout Europe and America.Many consider the enlightenment a
major turning point in western civilization,an age of light in replacing an age of darkness.

Writers of Neoclassical period tried to imitate the style of the Romans and Greeks. The
combination of the terms'neo'which means 'new'and 'classical'as in the day of the Roman
and Greek classics.It was proceded by The Renaissance and followed by the Romantic era. In
fact,the Neoclassical period ended in 1798 when Wordsworth published the Romantic'Lyrical
Ballads'.

It is known as neoclassical age so this time period is broken down into three parts:

 The Restoration age (1660-1700)

 The Augustan age (1700-1745)and

 The Age of Johnson (1745-1798)

 The Restoration period(1660-1700):


The first period in the Neoclassical period was the Restoration period.The name comes from
the restoration of the monarchy after the return of Charles II after the Oliver Cromwell's
Commonwealth.

In 1660 theatres were reopened after puritan age and it was born a new type of theatre
characterized by the comedy of manners.

It is also known as the Age of Dryden (1631-1700). Dryden was distinguished poet,playwright
and critic. He was true representative of this period.

 The Augustan Age (1700-1745):


The Augustan age took it's name from the Roman emperor Augustus , whose monarchy
brought stability in the social and political environment.

It is also known as the Age of Pope due to his noteworthy contributions.

Pope was important like any figure in this period who devoted himself completely to
literature.Poetry of this period was dominated by intellect, criticism,satire,arguments and
politics.

Pope was famous satirical poet,prose and criticism writer as well.

 The Age of Johnson (1745-1798):


Johnson was important figure of this period because Shakespearean Literature found
appreciation during this era.

It is also known as the age of sensibility.

Qualities like balance,reason and intellect were the main focus of this era.

 Characteristics of Neoclassical Age:


Neoclassical literature is characterized by order,accuracy and structure.

In direct opposition to Renaissance attitudes where man was seen as basically good, the
neoclassical writers portrayed man as inherently flawed.

They emphasized restraint,literature self -control and common sense.

This was the time when conservatism flourished in both politics and literature.
A large number of literary works come out during this period,which included parody, fables,
melodrama, rhyming with couplets,satire,novels, essays.

Scientist and philosophers of the time shared their ideas at scientific institutes, literary
salons,coffeehouses,in printed books and pamphlets .

 Famous writers of Neoclassical period :


John Dryden (1631-1700):
Was an english poet, literary critic,and playwright who was appointed England's first
poet.His famous poem"Absalom and Achitophel".

 Daniel Defoe(1660-1731):
was an english writer,trader,journalist, pamphleteer and spy.He was most famous for his
novel "Robinson Crusoe", published in 1719.

 Alaxender Pope (1688-1744):


Was poet and known for satirist of the English Augustan period, best known for his poem
"The Rape of the Lock "(1712-1714).

Dr.Samuel Johnson (1709-1784):


Was an english poet, biographer, critic, essayist and lexicographer(study of words) regarded
as one of the greatest figure.His famous book "A Dictionary of English Language"published in
(1755).

Jonathan Swift (1661-1745):


Was most prominent prose writer of that age,who got famous after write "Gulliver's Travels
"(1726).

 Voltaire (1694-1778):
Francois-Marie Arouet known as Voltaire,was a writer philosopher, historian and polemicist
(A writer or person who argues against the writing of others)of French enlightenment.His
famous satirical novel"Candide"published in (1759) .
