It is also known as neo classical age,The age of reason,Age of satire, Augustan age.
Introduction:
The term" enlightenment " was popularized in western world through the 19th century
translations of Max Müllar.
This movement began in late 17th century and ended in 18th century.
It is called neoclassical age, because in this age writers followed the criticism of ancient
writers like Homer,Virgil, Aristotle and Horace.
The Enlightenment age,also known as the age of reason, because it was an intellectual and
cultural movement that emphasized logic and reason.
Purpose:
Using the power of press enlightenment thinkers like John Locke, Isaac Newton and Voltaire
questioned accepted knowledge and spread new ideas about openness, investigation and
religious tolerance, throughout Europe and America.Many consider the enlightenment a
major turning point in western civilization,an age of light in replacing an age of darkness.
Writers of Neoclassical period tried to imitate the style of the Romans and Greeks. The
combination of the terms'neo'which means 'new'and 'classical'as in the day of the Roman
and Greek classics.It was proceded by The Renaissance and followed by the Romantic era. In
fact,the Neoclassical period ended in 1798 when Wordsworth published the Romantic'Lyrical
Ballads'.
It is known as neoclassical age so this time period is broken down into three parts:
In 1660 theatres were reopened after puritan age and it was born a new type of theatre
characterized by the comedy of manners.
It is also known as the Age of Dryden (1631-1700). Dryden was distinguished poet,playwright
and critic. He was true representative of this period.
Pope was important like any figure in this period who devoted himself completely to
literature.Poetry of this period was dominated by intellect, criticism,satire,arguments and
politics.
Qualities like balance,reason and intellect were the main focus of this era.
In direct opposition to Renaissance attitudes where man was seen as basically good, the
neoclassical writers portrayed man as inherently flawed.
This was the time when conservatism flourished in both politics and literature.
A large number of literary works come out during this period,which included parody, fables,
melodrama, rhyming with couplets,satire,novels, essays.
Scientist and philosophers of the time shared their ideas at scientific institutes, literary
salons,coffeehouses,in printed books and pamphlets .
Daniel Defoe(1660-1731):
was an english writer,trader,journalist, pamphleteer and spy.He was most famous for his
novel "Robinson Crusoe", published in 1719.
Voltaire (1694-1778):
Francois-Marie Arouet known as Voltaire,was a writer philosopher, historian and polemicist
(A writer or person who argues against the writing of others)of French enlightenment.His
famous satirical novel"Candide"published in (1759) .
