GUIDE CARD
A. Learning Competency
Analyze diagrams in explaining how materials cycle in the
environment.
B. Introduction
Water, like any other nutrient, is recycled, but it differs from most
other nutrient cycling because it remains unchanged in the cycle and
continues even in the absence of living things. However, life cannot
exist without water because all living things depend on it. In fact,
water constitutes about 60 to 96 percent of the weight of living things.
The heat from the sun causes water in the Earth’s seas and oceans to
evaporate. As water vapor reaches the cooler layers in the
atmosphere, it condenses and forms clouds. Eventually, water falls
down on the Earth’s surface from the clouds as rain, hail, or snow.
Most of the water falls back into the seas and oceans. Some seep
into the soil and stored to become the underground water supply.
Some are absorbed by the roots and stored in various parts of the
plant. Animals obtain water by drinking or eating plants. Animal
excretion like sweating and urination returns the rest of the water back
into the environment. Plants release water into the environment during
transpiration and dew formation. The process of decomposition also
releases water back where it came from, and the cycle continues.
The water cycle differs from the other cycles of materials. The changes
it undergoes are purely physical rather than chemical. During
evaporation and condensation, water simply changes its form/phase.
Activity 1
The Water Cycle
Objective:
Find out the important processes in the water cycle.
Materials:
2 equal – sized transparent bottles blue food colors
medicine dropper rubber band
1 pc plastic sheet water
2 thermometers
2. Half – fill each bottle with water. Add about two drops of blue
food color to each bottle.
5. Place the two bottles under the sun for about two hours then
observe the setups. Are there any changes in the bottles?
2
Activity 2
Water Cycle
Objectives:
1. Trace the water cycle.
2. Explain the importance of water cycle in living things.
Materials:
Illustration of water cycle
Chart of the poem ‘The Wind Whispered to the Grass’
by Amelita Lo
Procedure:
1. Read and interpret the poem, then answer the questions
asked.
On a cold afternoon
when the sun began to set
a cold wind came blowing
over the fields
3
The next morning, the wind left the grass stood still
While the sun shine hot and bright
The dew on the grass disappeared.
