DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 8

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
A. Define the Rectangular Coordinate System and other related terms.
B. Plot the point on a coordinate plane.
C. Cite real life applications of the Rectangular Coordinate System.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Plotting of Points on the Rectangular Coordinate System

Resources:
Teaching Aid: Multimedia presentation, whiteboard, flash cards
Value focus: Critical Thinking

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preparatory Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
Good Morning Class!
3. Prepare the class by asking learners
to arrange their chairs and to pick up
any piece of paper scattered on the
floor.
4. Checking of attendance
5. Review of the past lesson.

Learners answer the following questions

related to their previous lesson on
“Illustrating the Rectangular Coordinate
System”.

a. Who invented the coordinate plane?

b. What is the term for the horizontal
line?
c. What is the term for the vertical line?
d. What is the term used for each of the
four regions formed through the
intersection of the two perpendicular
lines? (students answer)
e. What are used in naming these
regions?
f. What is the direction of naming these
regions?
g. In an ordered pair of numbes ( x , y ) ,
what is the term for the first number
x?

B. Motivation
Conduct a preliminary activity entitled
“Let’s See Cam Norte!” Show the following
pictures of the tourist attraction or
landmarks in the Province of Camarines
Norte.

a. Ask the learners to name the tourist

attraction or landmark being shown.
b. Let them identify the municipality
where it is found.
c. Ask them what they have learned in
the activity.
d. Relate the activity to introduce the
new lesson (Plotting of Points on the
Rectangular Coordinate System).

C. Discussion
Give the definition of the word “plot” in
Mathematics:

plot (used as a verb)

- to draw on a graph or map
- to place a point on a coordinate plane
using x- and y-coordinates

Relate the activity on naming the tourist
attraction or landmark and its location
to point plotted on acoordinate plane and its
location.
Tell the class that every point corresponds to
only one ordered pair of numbers.
Emphasize that every ordered pair has
coordinates, and these coordinates are used
in determiningthe location of the point

Discuss how to name the coordinates of the

points plotted on the coordinate plane.
Yes, Ma’am
Remember: In naming the coordinates of a
point, the first coordinate is the 𝑥- 𝑐𝑜𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑒
and second is 𝑦- 𝑐𝑜𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑒. They can’t be
interchanged.

Activity
Use the Cartesian plane to find the Answers:
coordinates of the following figures. 1) Circle - (−5 , 4 )
1) Circle 2) Square - (3 , 6)
2) Square 3) Hexagon - (−3 , 6 )
3) Hexagon 4) Frog
- (−6 ,−6 )
4) Frog 5) Fish
5) Fish 6) Pentagon - ( 2 ,−5 )
6) Pentagon 7) Right triangle - ( 5 ,−1 )
7) Right triangle 8) Equilateral triangle - ( 6 , 2)
8) Equilateral triangle 9) Crab - (−5 ,−3 )
9) Crab 10) Snail - (−2 , 2 )
10) Snail - ( 6 ,−3 )

After the given activity discuss how to plot

the points whose coordinates are given,
present the procedure on Point-plotting.

To graph a point A( x , y) , do the following

procedure:
1. Start at the origin.
2. Move x units horizontally along the
x−axis .
3. Then, move y units vertically.
4. Draw the point and label it A .

Apply this procedure to the given example.

Example: Plot the following points on the

plane with the given coordinates:

P ( 1, 4 ) ; L ( 3 , 4 ); A ( 4 ,2 ); N ( 3 , 0 ); E ( 1 ,0 ); S ( 0 , 2 )
Polygon (Hexagon)
If you connect all points accordingly, what
geometric figure will you form? To determine the coordinates of a
given point: start in the point of origin
Now, if you are asked to determine the then move either left or right of the
coordinates of a given point, how will you do origin (along x-axis) depending on the
it? location of the point and lastly move
either upward or downward.
Very good! Give yourselves a hand for a job
well done.

D. Generalization
Let’s have a short recap of what we just
discussed. (students will answer based on
their own understanding)
What is a Rectangular Coordinate System or
Crtesian Plane? (students will cite sample application)

What are other application of Rectangular

Coordinate System you are familiar with?
(students answer may vary)
Why do you think is important to
understand the Rectangular Coordinate
System or Cartesian Plane?

IV. Evaluation

A. Name the ordered pair of the plotted point.

1) A _______ 2) B _______ 3) C _______

4) D _______ 5) E _______ 6) F _______

B. Construct a Cartesian Coordinate Plane and plot the following points.

1) M ( 0 ,10 )
2) A (−2 ,−8 )
3) T (7 , 0)
4) H (−3 ,10 )

V. Assignment

Fill in the blanks of the appropriate element that would make the sentence correct.
Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper.

of the French mathematician ______________ who is known as the “Father of
Modern Mathematics.”
2. The Rectangular Coordinate Plane is composed of two perpendicular number
lines that meet at the intersection called ______ and divide the plane into four
regions called ________.
3. In an ordered pair, the first number is the x- coordinate which is also known as
the __________ and the second number is the y – coordinate which is also known as
__________.
4. The point falls in Quadrant I if it has signs (__,__), Quadrant II if (__,__),
Quadrant III if (__,__) and Quadrant IV if (__,__).
5. For more ease in plotting the points in the Cartesian Plane, start making move
from the origin either ____ or ______ in the x-axis then move _____ or ______ in the
y-axis.
