A community health worker is a public health worker who acts as an intermediary between health or
social services, government systems, and a community. Community health workers have a trusting
relationship with the people they serve. Establishing and maintaining contacts is an essential part of the
job. With CHW’s it makes it easier for people to access high-quality services and educate them about
health issues. The roles and activities of community health workers (CHWs) are tailored to meet the
unique needs of the communities they serve. A CHW's role depends on factors such their education,
training, lived experience, and experience working with specific populations.

When the local health center planned a programme for their barangays, they had a good action plan
except for allowing anyone to be trained as a community health worker when there should be at least a
criterion for those who will be a health care worker for their brgy. They have not set standards or
qualifications for the barangays that they are sending just anyone to represent each barangay.
People/residents of the brgy. have issues with this, since the Chief of the barangay would just send
anyone and with that whatever that person do would affect them as a whole. We could say that the
brgy. can do have their own qualifications for the CHW’s but since the local health center did not give
one they would think it is okay, and what do they know about the qualifications and requirements to be
CHW.

Some places have begun to develop training and credentialing requirements to become a CHW. The
requirements vary across cities, employers and employment sectors. Some thins to consider before
becoming a CHW are: first they could require certifications, this can be obtained by passing an exam
offered by the National Accreditation Commission for Health Education. CHW are not licensed, as long as
they have a high school diploma or a college degree, but the local health center or barangay can set
additional educational training and requirements. Lastly, they should choose a person that is
knowledgeable on community norms and should be able to speak the language of the papulation they
serve.

In order to do their complex work, CHWs need to be empathetic, resourceful and willing to help others.
Such qualities are personal characteristics that can be enhanced, but not necessarily taught. When
organizations want to find Community Health Workers they look for the following qualities:

• Relationship with the community being served

• Desire to help the community

• Empathy

• Persistence

• Creativity and resourcefulness

• Personal strength and courage

• Respectfulness
