AN ANALYSIS ON CONFLICT IN NGENEST THE MOVIE

A FILM BY ERNEST PRAKASA

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter deals with background of study, the statement of the problem,

purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation and

definition of key term. All those are discussed as follow:

A. BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Literature are the result of human creation, taste, and initiative, apart

from providing entertainment are also loaded with values, both the value

of beauty and the values of life teachings. People can find out the values of

life, the composition of customs, a belief, and the outlook on the life of

other people or society through literature. With the presence of literature

that talk about human problems, literature and humans have an inseparable

relationship. Literature with all its expressions is a reflection of human

life. Problems in human life are an inspiration for authors to express

themselves with the media of literary works. The sentence above can be

concluded that literature may not be created without the element of human

presence. Basically, literature cannot be separated from humans, both

humans as writers and as literary connoisseurs. Observing this, it is clear

that humans play a very decisive role in literary life and the development

of a literary work. Literature are human personal expressions in the form

of experiences, thoughts, feelings, ideas, passions, and beliefs in a form of

living pictures that can evoke charm with language tools and are described

in written form. Basically, literature is very useful for life. Literature is a

type of entertainment thatintellectual and spiritual. It can be concluded that

this literature can provide insight and knowledge for the reader. So,

literature can give awareness to readers about the truths of life, even

though they are depicted in the form of fiction. Literature can also provide

joy and inner satisfaction for writers and readers.

Literature as a portrait of people's lives is a literary work that can be

enjoyed, understood, utilized by society. Literature are created because of

a person's inner experience in the form of events, which are interesting so

that the idea of imagination that is poured in the form of writing and

literature will contribute to the values of figures and social order, even

though the literature is only in the form of fiction, but in fact, literature can

provide value. moral values for the readers. Literature always present a

picture and life itself, which is a social reality. This life will include the

relationship between people and God, humans and their God, and events

that occur in a person's mind.

Literary works are imaginative works Pradopo (1994: 59). This means

that the literary work occurs as a result of handling and the result of the

handling is a discovery, then the discovery is compiled into a system with

the power of imagination, to create a new world where before there was no

literature, life is life, while life is the most interesting game. In terms of

the language used by the author, the way of writing in a literary work, and

the background of the creation of a literary work. Literary works are

imaginative, it can be concluded that literary works can affect the soul of a

reader so that readers seem to be carried away and feel for themselves the

events that are in the novel. Another benefit of literary works is that they

can be used as an experience to work, because anyone can pour their heart

and mind into artistic writing.

By reading a good fiction novel, it is like playing a game with a high

level of difficulty rather than playing a trivial game where players describe

or ignore existing rules (Stanton, 2007: 27). The point of this opinion is

that when reading fiction, it takes a high level of understanding to be able

to capture what is conveyed by the author in a literature. In understanding

a novel, it is the same as living the fantasy world created by writers, and

sometimes being carried away by the stories in the novel. However, it is

not enough just to do that or it is not enough to just look at the text, but

more complete if we are also able to reveal the author.

The beauty of language or aesthetic function in a literature will also

increase the weight of the literature Aminuddin (1990: 29). The style of

language is the embodiment of the author's ideas. The purpose of this

statement is that language style is closely related to the way the author

presents ideas in his work. The appearance and expression of these ideas

are manifested in the form of various language styles. Imagination

contained in literature, although wrapped in the spirit of creativity, cannot

be separated from subjective tastes and tendencies, personal aspirations

and opinions when responding to objects outside themselves, as well as

individualistic charges inherent in the author, so that the expression of

works based on the power of intuition. and imagination, in addition to the

power to absorb the realities of life.

Literature are born from the expression of deposits of experience that

already exist in the soul of the author, deeply through the process of

imagination (Aminuddin, 2009: 57). The opinion above can be concluded

that a literature is born because of the desire of the author to express his

existence as a human being which contains certain ideas, ideas, and

messages inspired by the imagination and socio-cultural reality of the

author, and uses language media as a transmitter or a literature. This is a

socio-cultural phenomenon that involves human creativity in its creation.

An author will invite reading to enter the experience or imagination of

literature (Nurgiyantoro, 2007: 3). The purpose of this opinion can be

concluded, an author will live various problems or the reality of life with

full sincerity, then re-expressed through the means of fiction by his

imagination and creativity. Literature and values of life are two social

phenomena that complement each other as an extension. As a miniature,

literary works function to invest a large number of events that have been

framed in patterns of creativity and imagination. As an imaginary work,

fiction offers a variety of human and human problems, life and life.

Based on the various opinions above, it can be concluded that a

literature is a work of art that is used by an author for entertainment

purposes and has its own rules or structures that are different from other

works of art. With the aim of an author will usually try as much as

possible to direct the reader to the pictures of the reality of life in the
novel. Like the story in the novel Penari Kecil by Sari Safitri Mohan, it

can bring readers as if they are in that life.

The events that occurred in Ngenest The Movie, brought to life by the

main character as a Chinese person who is considered a minority and other

characters as indigenous people. A writer will describe human life with

problems, conflicts with other people or conflicts that occur in themselves.

The author plays an important role in creating the characters depicted in

literary works. In the film Ngenest by Ernest Prakasa presents the life

story of Chinese people in Indonesia who have various kinds of conflicts

in the form of words that have intrinsic and extrinsic elements. Therefore,

an author tries his best to direct the reader to pictures of the reality of life

through the stories in the film.

On that basis, there are still literary studies that only emphasize the

history of literature or literary theory, and have not studied what literary

appreciation is and how to study literature in its entirety, even literary

studies in general are still in the structure of literary works (with a

structural approach) and have not touched upon literature. Literary

meaning is the essence of a literary work. The shortcoming of this

structural approach demands the importance of using other theories that

are more likely to explore literary ideas and meanings.

This analysis will focus on the elements of conflict in the film.

Researchers will analyze the conflict in the film Ngenest the movie.

Because according to the researcher the story is interesting where the main

character of this film is Chinese and is always discriminated against by the

natives but with a strong determination he wants to blend in with the

natives. So that researchers are interested in analyzing the novel. The

researcher analyzes the conflicts that support the story. Conflict is an

important event that can develop the plot. If a story doesn't have conflict,

it's boring. The characters only appear in the same activity in each chapter

and there is no conflict in the story. The audience will feel bored and will

not be interested in reading the novel. “Conflict is an essential element in

development plots” (Nurgiyantoro, 2010:122). But if the story has conflict

the reader or audience will be interested to read or watch the story again

because the audience wants to know how the story ends.

Based on the description above, the researcher intends to conduct a

study under the title. "THE ANALYSIS ON CONFLICT IN ‘NGENEST

THE MOVIE’ A FILM BY ERNEST PRAKASA".

B. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

To get the right research results, a problem formulation is needed. The

formulation of the problem in this study is as follows.

1. How are the conflicts in Ngenest The Movie?

2. What are the types of conflict in Ngenest The Movie?

C. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

Based on the problem above, the purposes are:

1. To describe how conflicts in Ngenest The Movie are.

2. To describe the types of conflict in Ngenest The Movie.

D. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

1. Theoretical Significance
Theoretically, through this analysis, it contributes some useful

information and clear understanding about literary theory itself and

specially everything that has related to conflict.

2. Practical Significance

a. For the researcher : The researcher finds information about conflict

in Ngenest The Movie.

b. For the viewer : The researcher hopes that the audience towards the

conflict in the film Ngnest can accept the differences between the

Chinese and the natives that occur in real life as told in this film.

E. SCOPE AND LIMITATION

1. Scope

There are several elements that can build a literary work, such as

themes, plots, characterizations and so on. As for the supporting

elements that can make a literary work look more interesting, such as

conflict, and moral values that can make the story more meaningful.

2. Limitation

In this research, the researcher will analyze the conflicts that occur

in the film Ngenest The Movie.

F. DEFINITION OF KEY-TERM

Conflict is an important event to develop a plot. Conflict suggests in a

situation that is not expected by the actor. Conflict also suggest on an

event is not pleasure. Conflict is often referred a fight between two

characters, protagonist and antagonist.

Ngenest The Movie is a film by Ernest Prakasa that tells of his life as a

Chinese living in Indonesia. The film NGENEST tells the story of Ernest

Prakasa's life as a man of Chinese descent, where minorities are always

discriminated against. from elementary to middle school, he was always

bullied by his schoolmates because he was different, where his physical

appearance strongly mirrored the average Chinese. White skin, slanted

eyes. and it turned out to be very detrimental to Ernest, because the

difference was that he could not mix with the natives and was always

bullied. from then on he did not want the same fate. So, he really wanted

to marry a native woman, because he hoped that his descendants would

not suffer the misfortune he experienced just because of visual differences.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter reviews the underlying theories of the study. The writer takes

some theories corncerning her study. They are :

A. Film

1. Definition of Film

According to Ayoana (2010), films are life-images, also often

called movies. Film, collectively, is often called cinema. Cinema itself

comes from the word kinematics or motion. Films are also liquid

layers of cellulose, commonly known in the film industry as celluloid.

The literal understanding of film (cinema) is Cinemathographie which

comes from Cinema and tho is the same as phytos (light) plus graphie

which is the same as grhap (writing or drawing or image), so the

meaning is painting motion with light. In order for us to be able to

paint with light, we must use a special tool, which we usually call a

camera.

Movie usually describes about love, life, politic, violence etc.

According to Bordieu as quoted by Kathie Njanie (2007:2), symbolic

violence is violence wielded with tacit complicity between its victims

and its agents, insofar as both remain unconscious of submitting to or

welding it.

The literal understanding of film (cinema) is Cinemathographie

which comes from Cinema + tho = phytos (light) + graphie = grhap

(writing = image = image), so the meaning is painting motion with

light. In order for us to paint motion with light, we must use a special

tool, which we usually call a camera.

Film is just a moving image, while the movement is called

intermittent movement, a movement that appears only because of the

limited ability of the human eye and brain to capture a number of

image changes in a fraction of a second. Film has become a very

influential medium, more than any other media, because audio and

visual, it works well together in making the audience less bored and

easier to remember, because of its attractive format.

Definition of Film According to Law 8/1992, is an artistic and

cultural copyrighted work which is a visual-heard mass

communication media made based on the principle of cinematography

by being recorded on celluloid tape, video tape, video disc, and/or

materials resulting from other technological inventions in all forms,

types, and sizes through chemical processes, electronic processes, or

other processes, with or without sound, which can be displayed and/or

displayed with mechanical, electronic, and/or other projection systems.

According to Effendi (1986; 239), film is defined as a cultural

product and a means of artistic expression. Film as mass

communication is a combination of various technologies such as

photography and sound recording, art, both fine arts and theatrical arts,

literature and architecture, and music.

Effendy (2000: 207) also states that film techniques, both the

equipment and the settings have succeeded in displaying images that

are getting closer to reality. In the dark atmosphere of the cinema, the

audience witnessed a story that seemed to have really happened in

front of him

2. Development of Film

a. History and Development of International Film

The film, which was invented at the end of the 19th century

and continues to develop to this day, is a 'further development' of

photographic technology. An important development in the history

of photography occurred in 1826, when Joseph Nicephore Niepce

of France mixed with silver to create images on a thick sheet of tin.

Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) an American scientist who

invented the electric lamp and the phonograph (records), in 1887

was inspired to make a device for recording and making

(producing) images. Edison was not alone. He was assisted by

George Eastman, who later in 1884 invented the film tape

(celluloid) made of translucent plastic. In 1891 Eastman, assisted

by Hannibal Goodwin, introduced a roll of film that could be

inserted into a camera during the day.

The tool designed and made by Thomas Alva Edison is called a

kinetoscope (kinetoscope) which is in the form of a hollow box to

watch or peek at a show.

The Lumiere Brothers then designed a new device that

combined a camera, film processing device and projector into one.

The Lumiere Brothers called the new equipment for the

kinetoscope the "cinematograph" (cinematographe).

This cinematograph equipment was then patented in 1895. In

this cinematograph equipment there is an intermittent movement

mechanism that causes each frame of the film playing to stop for a

moment, and then illuminated by a projector lamp. In the early

days of its invention, the cinematograph equipment was used to

record short scenes. For example, the scene of the train entering the

station, the scene of children playing on the beach, in the park and

so on.

The film was shown to the general public for the first time with

pay took place at the Grand Cafe Boulevard de Capucines, Paris,

France on December 28, 1895. This event also marked the birth of

film and cinema in the world.

Although efforts to create a "moving image" or the film itself

had begun long before 1895, even as early as 130 AD, the

international community acknowledged that the events at the

Grand Cafe marked the birth of the world's first film.

Since its discovery, the journey of the film has continued to

experience great development along with the development or

advances in supporting technology. At first, only black and white

and silent films were known or known as "silent films". The silent

film era ended in the 1920s, after the invention of sound films. The

first sound film was produced in 1927 under the title "Jazz Singer",
and premiered to the public on October 6, 1927 in New York,

United States. Then followed the discovery of color film in the

1930s.

Changes in the film industry are clearly visible in the

technology used. If at first the film is a black and white image,

mute and very fast, then it evolves to suit our eye vision system, in

color and with all kinds of effects that make the film more dramatic

and look more real. In subsequent developments, films can not

only be enjoyed in theaters and later on television, but also with the

presence of VCD and DVD (Blue-Ray), films can also be enjoyed

at home with good picture quality, well-organized sound system,

which is termed as home theater. With the development of the

internet, movies can also be watched via the superhighway

network.

Film was then seen as an industrial commodity by Hollywood,

Bollywood and Hong Kong. On the other side of the world, movies

used as a medium of conveying and cultural products. This matter

can be seen in France (before 1995), the Netherlands, Germany,

and English. The impact is that films will be seen as cultural

artifacts that must be developed, film studies enlarge, experiments

are also supported by the state. This last group places the film as a

political asset for the state propaganda media. Therefore, in

Indonesia, film is under the supervision of the information

department with the concept of a film censorship agency.

For the United States, even though the films produced are set in

cultural background, but these films are export fields that provide

quite a large profit.

b. History and Development of Indonesian Film

In Indonesia, the film was first introduced on December 5,

1900 in Batavia (Jakarta). At that time the film was called "Picture

Idoep". The first film show was held in Tanah Abang with the

theme of a documentary depicting the journey of the Queen and

King of the Netherlands in The Hague. However, this first show

was not successful because the ticket price was considered too

expensive. So on January 1, 1901 , ticket prices are reduced by up

to 75% to stimulate audience interest.

The story film was first known in Indonesia in 1905 which was

imported from America. These imported films changed their titles

to Malay, and these imported story films sold well in Indonesia, as

evidenced by the increasing number of viewers and cinemas. The

appeal of this new spectacle turned out to be amazing.

The first local film produced in 1926, with the title “Loetoeng

Kasaroeng” produced by NV Java Film Company, is a story film

that is still silent. It was a bit late indeed, because that year in other

parts of the world, sound films had already begun to be produced.

Later, the same company produced their second film with the title

“Eulis Atjih”.
After this second film was produced, other film companies

emerged such as Halimun Film Bandung which made Lily van

Java and Central Java Film (Semarang) which produced Bloodied

Hands.

To further popularize Indonesian films, Djamaludin Malik

encouraged the Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) I on 30 March - 5

April 1955, after previously forming PPFI (Indonesian Film

Company Association). Then the film "Jam Malam" by Usmar

Ismail appeared as the best film in this festival. This film was also

selected to represent Indonesia at the Asia Film Festival II in

Singapore. This film is also considered the best work of Usmar

Ismail. A film that conveys a very sharp social critique of former

fighters after independence.

In the mid-'90s, national films that were facing an economic

crisis had to compete fiercely with the rise of soap operas on

private televisions. Especially with the presence of Laser Discs,

VCDs and DVDs which make it easier for people to enjoy

imported films. But on the other hand, the presence of digital

cameras also has a positive impact on the Indonesian film industry,

because with the existence of digital cameras, a community of

independent films has begun to be built. Films made outside the

existing standard rules. Films began to be produced with a militant

spirit. Although there are many films that look amateurish, there

are also films with good cinematography quality. Unfortunately,

these independent films still do not have a good circulation

network, so these films can only be seen on a limited basis and at

festivals.

Then, on December 19, 2009, Laskar Pelangi Film won the

Best Film Award in Asia Pacific at the Asia Pacific Film Festival

which was held in Taiwan.

3. Classification of Film

a. According to the Type of Film

1) Fiction

According to Anton Mabruri KN (2018), fiction is a film

whose story is based on an imaginative essay. Story films are

films made or produced based on stories written and played by

actors and actresses. Most or generally story films are

commercial in nature. The definition of commercial means that

the film is shown in theaters with a certain ticket price. This

means, to watch the film at the cinema, the audience must first

buy a ticket. Likewise, if it is broadcast on television, the

broadcast is supported by certain advertising sponsors.

2) Non Fiction

According to Anton Mabruri KN (2018), non-fiction films

are films that tell the reality or reality of a particular event. An

example of a non-fiction film is a documentary.

a) Documentary films
According to Gerzon R. Ayawaila (2008) in his book

explains, documentary films are films that document or

present reality. This means that whatever we record is

based on the existing facts, but in the presentation we can

also include our thoughts. This refers to previous theories

such as Stave Blandford, Barry Grant and Jim Hillier, in the

book The Film Studies Dictionary stating that documentary

films have subjects in the form of people, events, or

situations that actually occur in the world of reality and

outside the world of cinema.

b. According to the Method of Filmmaking

1) Experimental Film

Senoaji Julius (2015), one of Yogyakarta's filmmakers

stated that "experimental film is a form of effort by the artist by

trying to incorporate new things that he has never tried in his

previous works in order to produce an innovative work".

Experimental films are films made without referring to the

usual film-making rules. The aim is to experiment and find new

ways of pronunciation through film. Generally made by

filmmakers who are critical of change (among film artists),

without prioritizing the commercial side, but more on the

freedom of work.
2) Animated Film

Animation is a collection of images arranged in sequence.

When the series of images is displayed at an adequate speed,

the series of images will appear to be moving (Hidayatullah et

al., 2011: 63).

Meanwhile according to Vaughan in Binanto (2010:219)

states that "animation is an attempt to make a static

presentation come alive".

According to some experts above, it can be concluded that

Animated films are films made by utilizing pictures (paintings)

or other inanimate objects, such as dolls, tables, and chairs that

can be brought to life with animation techniques.

c. According to the Theme of Film (Genre)

The genre of film according to Panca Javandalasta (2011: 3),

namely, in films we will recognize the term genre or for

convenience we can call it the type or form of a film based on the

whole story. This is used to make it easier for the audience to

determine what film he will watch. There are several kinds of film

genres, including:

1) Action Movies

This genre usually tells about a character's struggle to

survive or a battle scene.

2) Comedy

This film genre is films that rely on humor, both in terms of

stories and in terms of characterizations.

3) Horror

This film genre is a mystery, usually tells a story that is

sometimes beyond human understanding. This genre has

become one of the audience's favorites because it offers a

sensation of horror that other genres don't have. Since the

advent of cinema, many filmmakers have photographed scary

events and some of them have been made into films. All media

materials are inevitably the product of the different times and

cultures that create them. For two reasons, it can be argued that

genres have a special place in this. One reason for that is that

the genres carry their message under the protective cloak of an

established form of popular entertainment. Another reason that

the genres are based on core topics that are if not universal, at

least not obsolete.

4) Thriller

This film genre always puts forward tension that is made

not far from elements of logic or such as murder. A thriller

story is mostly about an emotional goal, which is to get a

strong emotion. Most deal with generating tension and anxiety.

It is one of the best cinematic vehicles to explore the

sometimes disappointing and underrepresented truth about our

government and society at large. And due to some of its

greatest successes for acclaimed filmmakers like Alfred

Hitchcock, and including some of our favorite characters like

James Bond, this thriller has become a popular and important

part of the cinema tradition.

5) Science Fiction

This genre of film is commonly referred to as sci-fi.

Scientists will always be in this film genre because what they

produce will be the main conflict in the plot. Science fiction is

defined by a mixture of speculation and science. While fantasy

will explain through or make use of magic and mysticism,

science fiction will use the changes and trajectories of

technology and science. Science fiction often includes space,

biology, energy, time, and other observable sciences.

One of the most experimental and thought-provoking

classics of the genre, the science-fiction film genre (popularly

known as “sci-fi”) returns to the silent film era. The sci-fi genre

has remained strong throughout cinematic history, as film

remains one of the most popular mediums for showcasing

humanity's technical advances, as well as a means to grapple

with higher concepts such as alien life forms, artificial

intelligence, and humanity's place in the universe.

6) Drama
The genre of film that is usually liked by the audience

because it is considered a real picture of life and the audience

can feel the scene in movies

7) Romance

This film genre tells the romance of a couple's love. Most

viewers who see will be carried away by the romantic

atmosphere played by the players.

In the theory of the film above, it is stated that romantic

films focus on the story of the problem of love, both the love

story itself and the search for love as its main goal.

Most films have an aspect of romance between characters.

A romantic film can be defined as a film whose main plot (the

premise of the film) revolves around the development of

romance from the story of the main character. Based on this

understanding, the romantic film genre is easy to find in films,

at least this genre accompanies the main genre.

And the romantic film itself has a main story about the

main character's romantic relationship. The story can end

happily (happy ending) or unhappy (bitter ending), but

generally these romantic stories end happily while stories that

combine drama films and mix romantic stories/story in it are

called romantic drama films.

B. Conflict

1. Definition of Conflict

"The Conflict is defined as the mutual problem to be resolved

cooperatively" (Deutsch, Coleman, Marcu, 2006:32). Conflict is a

dispute between individuals or between groups that must be resolved.

Conflict occurs because of differences between individuals or between

groups. Conflict is an important event, it is an important element in the

development of the plot.

According to Nurgiyantoro (2010:123) events and conflicts are

usually closely related. There are certain events that can cause conflict.

Otherwise, due to conflict, other events may arise. Conflicts that are

followed by events will cause conflicts to escalate. The conflict above

is called the climax.

Abrams (1999:225) states the plot deals with a conflict. Conflict

between individuals, perhaps the protagonist's conflict against fate, or

against circumstances that stand in his way and the goals he has set for

himself; and in some works (such as in Henry James' Portrait of a

Lady) the main conflict is between opposing desires or values in the

temperament of the protagonist himself.

2. The Type of Conflict

Kelly Griffith (1982:27) states that there are two general categories

of conflict, internal conflict and external conflict. Internal conflict

occurs in the mind of the character. An example is a good person who

struggles inwardly with temptation. External conflicts occur between

individuals or between individuals and natural forces. The climactic

shootout in the American west is an example of physical external

conflict, but not all external conflict is physical or violent. A

disagreement between two people is also an external conflict.

Stanton (1965:16) in Burhan Nurgiyantoro (2010:124) says that

forms of conflict, as a form of event, can be divided into two

categories: physical conflict and inner conflict, external conflict and

internal conflict. According to Burhan Nurgiyantoro (2010:124)

external conflict is a conflict that occurs between a character and

something outside himself, perhaps with the natural environment can

be the human environment. Thus, external conflicts can be divided into

two categories, namely physical conflicts and social conflicts. Physical

conflict or commonly called physical conflict is a conflict that causes

clashes between characters and the natural environment. For example,

conflicts or problems experienced by a character due to floods,

droughts, volcanic eruptions and so on. Social conflict is a conflict

caused by social contact between humans, or problems arising from

relationships between humans. For example, labor, oppression, war or

other cases of social relations. Internal conflict or psychological

conflict is a conflict that occurs in the heart, soul of a character. So, it's

a conflict that people have with themselves, it's more of an internal

human problem. For example caused by a conflict between two

desires, beliefs, different choices, expectations, or other problems.

From the definition above, researchers can draw conclusions about

conflict. Researchers found two categories; external and internal

conflicts. External conflict is a conflict that occurs between person vs

person and person vs society is called social conflict and if it occurs

between person vs nature is called physical conflict. Internal conflict is

a conflict that occurs between personal vs. self, which can be

categorized into psychological conflict.

C. Synopsis of Ngenest

Ngenest: Sometimes Life Needs to be Laughed at is an Indonesian

comedy film that was released on December 30, 2015. This film is an

adaptation of a trilogy of novels of the same name by Ernest Prakasa. The

film is produced by Starvision Plus. The story in this film is adapted from

a book by stand-up comedian, Ernest Prakasa.

NGENEST tells about the anxiety of Ernest Prakasa, a man of Chinese

descent who feels the weight of being born as a minority who has always

been bullied by his schoolmates since he was in elementary school. The

story begins when a teenager Ernest enters elementary school. Because of

his physical appearance that looks different from his Indonesian friends in

general. With slanted eyes and fair skin, Ernest is often bullied by his

friends.

The bullying continued until he sat in junior high school. because he

didn't want to be bullied anymore, Ernest tried to solve this problem by

joining a gang of bullies and this method worked, he was no longer a

victim of bullying. However, anxiety resurfaced when Ernest reluctantly

had to join in bullying other children of Chinese descent. and in the end he

failed and was no longer friends with the bullies.

Ernest is the son of a married couple of Chinese descent. His physical

appearance quite reflects the average Chinese. White skin, slanted eyes.

And it turns out, being born with slanted eyes and white skin is a loss for

him.

Finally Ernest thought that this was a fate he had to accept. But he

realized that this did not have to be experienced by his descendants in the

future. Being a victim of bullying made him determined that his future

descendants should not suffer the same fate. He had to break the chain, by

marrying a native woman, with the hope that one day he would have an

indigenous child. This plan is opposed by his best friend since elementary

school, Patrick, who finds Ernest's ideals strange.

In his third year of college, he met Meira, a Sundanese/Javanese girl

who shares his faith with him. Their acquaintance went quite smoothly,

but problems arise when Ernest meets Meira's father who doesn't like his

son dating a Chinese at all, because he was almost bankrupt due to being

cheated by his Chinese business partner. But in the end Ernest managed to

win over his future in-laws, and after dating for five years, they decided to

get married.

After marriage, it turns out that Ernest has worries. What if their child

is born just like the father? What if he still fails to prevent his child from

being bullied? All these fears made Ernest delay the desire to have

children. On the other hand, Meira, who has been urged by her parents too,
wants to have children soon. After going through various fights, Ernest

finally relented for fear of losing Meira. Two years after getting married,

Meira became pregnant.

The climax is when Meira is approaching the delivery deadline, the

pressure is getting higher, Ernest is also stressed so that he makes a big

mistake at the office which makes him scolded by the boss. Unable to

withstand the constant pressure, Ernest flees to the place where he and

Patrick used to hide when they were little.

Patrick finally finds Ernest there, and alerts Ernest to go to the hospital

immediately. In a hurry, Ernest went to the hospital and accompanied

Meira to give birth. Meira also gave birth to a baby girl with slanted eyes.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Through this stage, the researcher will converse on the method of her

research of conflicts on Ngenest The Movie. The discussion will identify the

method she uses of analyzing the term. They are as follows:

A. Research Design

"Qualitative studies ones where the data are in the form of people's

words or the researcher's description of what he or she has observes and

experienced" (Sapsford, Jupp, 2006:20). So qualitative research is research

that uses words to describe the data presented. While quantitative research

is research that uses numeries to describe data. Qualitative research is a

descriptive research and tends to use an inductive analysis approach. The

theoretical basis is used as a guideline to focus research in accordance with

the facts on the ground. "Qualitative research is research that involves

analyzing and interpreting texts and interviews in order to discover

meaningful patterns descriptive of a particular phenomenon" (Auerbach,

Silverstein, 2003:3).
In this study, the researcher used qualitative descriptive. Qualitative

descriptive is research that uses descriptive data in the form of written or

spoken words for people who can be observed. Data obtained by

researchers from the film ngenest. a film and several books are used as

references related to the purpose of this research. The data that has been

obtained will be analyzed so that it can be used as a term as a result of the

data analysis process.

B. Source of Data

In this case, the object of the research is taken from Ngenest The

Movie. The film was made by Ernest Prakasa and produced by Starvision

Plus in 2015. This film is an adaptation of Ernest Prakasa's novel trilogy

with the same title. There are many elements behind this film, but due to

limited time, the researcher only chose conflict elements to be analyzed.

C. Data Collection Method

"Data are the smallest or lowest entities or recorded elements resulting

from some experience, observation, experiment, or other similar situation"

(Robert K. Yin, 2011:130). Data is a collection of information obtained

through experience, experimentation, and observation which can be in the

form of numbers, words, and pictures. There are several types of data

collection techniques. "The potential data collection activities are

interviewing, observation, collecting and Feeling" (Robert K. Yin,

2011:130). Important data in this research are films, and other data are

several books that are used as references to support this research. The
books used are books about conflict. The following is the order of data

collection:

1. View and understand the content of the Ngenest film.

The first way to collect data is to see and understand. Researchers see

and understand the Ngenest film to get information from the film so

that researchers can analyze the object.

2. Choosing and selecting data

The second way is that the researcher selects and selects relevant data

by considering the research objectives. Relevant data are several books

that can be used as references by researchers.

3. Collecting data related to the purpose of film research.

The third way, researchers collect data related to the research

objectives on the film. The data is the conflicts that exist in the

Ngenest The Movie.

D. Procedure of Data Analysis

After collecting the data, the researcher began to analyze the data. In

analysis, concluding is the final stage. Concluding is the final stage to

analyze the data. "By starting the fifth or concluding phase, you should

have a firm if still preliminary version of your interpretation" (Robert K.

Yin, 2011: 206). Thus, the next analysis term is as follows:

1. Analyzing the data.

Researchers analyzed conflict data that had been collected by

researchers from Ngenest The Movie. Researchers analyzed the data to

find the results of this study.

2. Concluding and summarizing the data.

Finally, the researcher concludes and summarizes how conflicts and

what types of conflicts are contained in Ngenest The Movie.
