3.1 Preproduction- The suspensionlugfurnishedunder thisspecification

shallbe a productwhich has been iuspectedand passed thepreproduction
inspection
specifiedherein.

drawings.

from forgings
inaccordancewithMIL-F-71 90,Grade B.

3.3.2 Threads - Thread dimensionsand designations

shallbe interpreted
in accordancewithHandbook H28.

3.4 Performance - The suspensionlugshallmeet theperformance

requirementsspecified
in Section4 when subjectedtotheapplicable
inspections.

3.5 Hardness - The suspensionlugshallmeet thehardnessrequirement

indicatedon MS3314.

3.6 Magneticparticleinspection
- The suspensionlugsfurnishedunder

shallpass themagneticparticle
inspection
specified
in Section4.

3.7 Workmanship - The workmanship displayedin fabrication of the

suspensionlugshallbe such as to assure,,
with@ designlimitations,
ability
ofthe
suspensionlugtomeet itsperformance requirementsunder allapplicable environmental
conditions.Unauthorizedrepair,welding,heavy burrs,are typicalsignsofinferior
workmanship. The standardsofworkmanship exhibited inany approvedpreproduction
sample,subjecttoany qualificationstatedintheGovernment’snoticeofapproval,shall
be determinativeoftherequirementsof thecontractrelativetoworkmanship insofar
as notspecifically
coveredby applicable specifications.

4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS

4.1 R esponaibility
forinspection- Unless otherwisespecifiedinthe
contractor purchaseorder,thesupplieris responsiblefortheperformance of all
inspectionrequirementsas specified
herein.Exceptas otherwisespecified, the
suppliermay utilizehisown facilities
or,any commercial laboratoryacceptable
to theGovernment. The Government reservestherighttoperform any ofthe in-
spectionssetforthinthespecificationwhere such inspections
are deemed necessary
to assuresuppliesand servicesconform toprescribedrequirements.

4.2 Classification

4.3.1 Samplingforpreproductioninspection- Unless otherwisespecified,

as soon as practicable
afteraward ofcontractor order,the contractorshallfurnish
preprcduction samples forinspection
todetermineconformancewiththisspecification
and MS3 314. Preprwhtctionsamples shallconsistofone hundredfifty(150)suspension
lugs. The samples shallbe identified
withthemanufacturers partnumber and contract
number and shallbe inspectedas specified
hereinand in accordancewiththecontract
or order (see6.2).

4.4 Qualityconformanceinspection- The quality

shallconsistofindividualinspection
and samplingtests.

4.4.1 Individualinspection - Unless otherwisespecified each suspension

lugon thecontractor order shallbe subjectedto thefollowinginspection
in theorder
listed.Any lugcontaininga defector failing
to pass any oftheseinspectionsshallbe
rejected:

4.4.2 Samplinginspection- A random sample of150 suspensionlugs

shallbe selectedfrom each productionlotand shallbe subjectedtothe following
tests
in theorder listed.Failureofany suspensionlugshallbe cause forrejection ofthe
entirelot.

4.4.2.1 Productionlot- A productionlotshallconsistof2000 suspension

lugsheattreatedat one time in one furnaceand which are allsubjectedto thesame
treatmentoperations.H a“continuousheattreating operationis employed,a lotwill
be defind as a quantityof2000 lugs.from a cOntinuOus~n thrOughOne firn?ceOr
treatingprocessunder one setofancbangedconditions.

4.5 Test fixture- The testfixtnreshallbe designedto simulatea

bomb rack hook havinga bearingsurface13/32 inchinwidth. The lengthofthread
engagementbetweenthesuspensionlugand thetestfiatureshallnotexceed1/2 inch.

The threadinthefixtnreshallmeet thefollowing

specialconditions:

(a) Pitchdiameter1.7013(rein)

(b) Minor diameter1.6696(rein)

4.6 Inspection
methods -

4.6.1 Examination- Each suspensionlugshallbe thoroughlyexamined

to determineconformanceto allof therequirementsOfthespecification
and applicable
militarystandardforwhich no specifictestsare described.

4.6.1.1 The suspensionlugsshallbe examined toascertainthatthepreparation

fordeliveryconforms tothisspecification.

4.6.2 Tensiletests- Tensileloadsshallbe appliedusingthetest

fiximredescribedin 4.5and in thedirections
as shown in Figure1. Tensileloads
(a)thru(e)shallbe appliedat ambientroom temperatureand thespeed oftesting
shallbe inaccordancewithFederalTest Methud StandardNo. 151,methcd 211.1,
paragraph 5.4and theloadshallbe heIdfora periodofone (1)minute as follows:

(a) Load, direction

‘W“, 27000 l?Js.There shallbe no permanent
deformation.

(b) Load, direction“W”, 35000 lbs. There shallbe no rupture.

(c) Load, direction“X”, 18000 lbs. There shallbe no permanent

deformation.

(d) Load, direction

“X”, 23300 Ibs. There shallbe no rupture.

(e) Load, direction“Y””.Each suspensionlugshallbe sufficiently

ductiletowithstanda deflection
of O.1inchmeasured at the
centerofthecrossbar indirectionl!Ytlwithoutrupturewhen
mounted in thetestfixture.

4.6.3 Impact test- The finished suspensionlug,notchedas shown in

Figure1,maintainedin a uniformtemperatureof-65?F,shallbe subjectedtoan
impact loadof200 ftlbsappliedin direction“Z” as shown in Figure 1. The impact
loadshallbe producedby a bcdy weighing20 lbsfallingfreelythrougha distance
of 10 feet.The impactshallbe appliedby an anvilbatinga flatsurface1/4 inchin
diameterand a minimum hardnessofR ockwellC 60. There shallbe no failure.

4.6.4 Hardness test- Each suspensionlugshallbe subjectedtothe

hardnesstestinaccordancewithFED-STD-1 51,Method 243.1. The hardnessshallhe
as indicatedon MS3314.

4.6.5 Proof load- Each suspensionlugshallbe subjectedto thetensile

testin4.6.2(a)excepttheloadshallbe heldfor a periodoffive(5)seconds.

4.6.6 Magneticparticle
inspection
- Each suspension
lugshall
be
inspected
inaccordance withMIL-I-6868.Thereshall
be no evidence
ofcracks,
sems, laps,or otherdetrimental
defects.

5. PREPARATION FOR DELIVERY

5.1 Packaging - Packagingshallbe LevelA or C, as specified.

5.1.1 Level A - SuspensionIugsshallbe unitpackaged,one each,in
accordancewithMethod 1 C ofMIL-P-116. The threadsshallbe adequatelyprotected
in theprocess. Preservativecompound is notrequired.

5.1.1.1 Intermediatepackaging- The intermediate packageshallnotweigh

more than25 pounds. The containershallconform to PPP-B-676 exceptwhen packed
inwireboundboxes (See5.2.1).When packed inwireboundboxes,weather resistant
classesoffiberboardboxes per PPP-B-636 shallbe used. The centersem, side
searnsand manufacturer’sjointshallbe sealedwithtapeconformingto PPP-T-60
or PPP-T-?6.

5.1.2 Level C - Suspensionlugsshallbe packagedin a manner which will

affordadequateprotectionfrom physicaldamage duringshipmentfrom thesupply
sourcetothefirstreceivingactivityforimmediate use. This level,as a minimum,
willconform toapplicablecarrierrulesand regulationsand may be thesuppliers
commercial practicewhen such meets the requirementsofthis’
level.

5.2 Packing- Packingshallbe A, B or C as specified.

5.2.1 Level A - Suspensionlugs,packagedas specifiedabove,shall

be packed in containerscorfforming
totheoverseasrequirementsof PPP-B-585,
PPP-B-591, PPP-B-601 or weatherresistant classesPPP-B-636. Closureshall
be inaccordancewiththe closurerequirementsofthe applicablebox specifications.
PPP-B-591 and PPP-B-636 are nottobe ussd forSouthEastAsia (SEA)shipments.

5.2.2 Level B - Suspensionlugs,packagedas specifiedabove,shall

be packed in containersconformingtothedomesticrequirementsof PPP-B-585,
PPP-B-591, PPP-B-601 or PPP-B-636. Closureshallbe inaccordancewiththe
closurerequirementsoftheapplicable box specifications.

5.2.3 Level C - Suspensionlugsshallbe packed in a manner which will

provideprotection
from corrosion, deterioration
and damage duringdirectshipment I

6.3 Data - For theinformationof Contractorsand Contracting Officers,

Section2 ofthisspecification,or (c)referencedlower-tierdocuments nesd notbe
preparedfortheGovermnent and shallnotbe furnishedtotheGovernment unless
specifiedin thecontractor order. The datatobe furnishedshallbe listedon DD
Form 1423 (ContractorData RequirementsList), which shallbe attachedtoand
made a partofthe,contractor order.

6.3.1 Preproductiondata- When preproductionsamples are submitted

(see6.2)theyshouldbe accompaniedby a completeinspectionreportshowingthe
reeultsofthe contractor’s
inspections.The inspection
