How to connect a Cognex In-Sight camera to iQ-R PLC

Using SLMP scanner function, it is possible to quickly setup data transfer between a Cognex In-Sight
Micro vision sensor and iQ-R PLC over Ethernet.

1) GX Works 3 Parameter Settings

From the project tree, select ‘Parameter’ -> ‘RxxCPU’ -> ‘Module Parameter’. Enable online
change for SLMP and then configure the communication in External Device Configuration.

On the right-hand side, select the desired In-Sight from the available Ethernet profiles and drag
over to the network diagram. Enter the IP address for the camera and also select a port no. to
use in the range of 5010-65534. Then select ‘Close with Reflecting the Setting’. Apply the
Module Parameter changes to the GX Works 3 project and then download settings to the PLC. If
you do not see all the Cognex profiles registered to GX Works 3, refer to the link at the end of
the document to download the profile from the Knowledge Base.

2) In-Sight Explorer Communication Settings

In In-Sight Explorer, go to ‘Communications -> Add Device -> Device = PLC -> Manufacturer =
Mitsubishi -> Protocol = SLMP Scanner’. Make sure iQ-R controller type (3E Frames) is selected
and the host port matches the port no. used in the PLC settings. If the connection is good, it
should say ‘Connected’ in the lower right hand corner.

Next, go to the Device Addressing tab. Here is where the PLC addresses for word data and bit
data are defined. Select the desired PLC devices addresses.

Refer to In-Sight Explorer Help for data block definitions.

Output data is the area of data of the vision sensor that is sent to the PLC. Add desired data
from job to the output section. Note the data type that applies to the data being sent. Here we
will transfer the job’s pass count to the PLC at device register D205.

3) Test Connection
Save job and go online. Manually trigger to see ‘Pass Count’ data increase in In-Sight
Explorer.

In GX Works 3, go to ‘Online’ -> ‘Watch’ -> ‘Register to Watch’ and add destination data to the
Watch Window 1. Select ‘Online’ -> ‘Watch’ -> ‘Start Watching’ and verify data is transferring to
the PLC.

At this point, the rest of the application is ready to be programmed.
