A. PURPOSE
This procedure covers all inspections and tests to be performed on a current transformer
after installation at site and prior energization.
B. EQUIPMENT REQUIRED
- Digital CT Analyzer.
- Mega Ohm Meter 500/5000 V.
C. GENERAL INSPECTION
- Visual inspection, compliance with drawings.
- Visual check rated pressure.
- Nameplate ratings.
- Connections tightening, cables marking.
- Grounding system (continuity and connections).
- Orientation of primary side (P1 & P2) in compliance with drawings.
D. ISOLATIONS RESISTANT TEST
- Apply a DC voltage for 1 minute (500 V DC for the LV side winding)
- Performance the following Test:
> Insulation resistance between Primary and Secondary windings (The primary windings
are connected together and the secondary windings are connected together).
> Insulation resistance between Secondary windings and ground (Successively measure the
insulation resistance between each winding and the other winding connected to ground).
E. POLARITY TEST
The polarity is checked using CT analyzer.
F. SECONDARY CHARACTERISTICS
In order to control that the CT is meeting the requirements, and for some type of protection relays
such as differential or high impedance relays, the following secondary measurements must be done.
F.1 CT’S SECONDARY RESISTANCE
- Disconnect the secondary loop from the CT’s terminals.
- Measure directly the resistance of the secondary cores using a CT analyzer.
F.2 SECONDARY BURDEN
- Disconnect the secondary loop from the CT’s terminals.
- Inject with the secondary injection set, a current equal to the nominal secondary current
of the CT by using CT analyzer.
- Measure the voltage value at the test set output and deduct the power consumption of the loop.
(P(VA) = U.I ).Check that the consumption does not exceed the nominal rated power of the CT.

G. SATURATION CURVE
Determine the knee voltage. The measurements are performed with the primary circuit open.
The knee voltage is defined as a voltage applied to a secondary winding, with all other windings
open by using CT analyzer.
H. RATIO TEST
The tests are performed to check the CT ratios, the protection relays operation and the metering
indication by using CT analyzer. Primary and secondary currents are recorded in order to
determine the ratio Ip / Is. The ratio error is defined as:
Where Kn is the nominal ratio and Ip and Is are the actual primary and secondary currents.
NOTE: Check that the unused windings are shorted.
I. RECORDING OF INSPECTION AND TEST DATA
The results of the checks and measurements made during the field test shall be recorded.
