STRATEGIES FOR

ECOSYSTEM
DEVELOPMENT

M.RAGHAV SANTHOSH
[SANDY]
WHAT IS ECOSYTEM?
An Ecosystem is a group or community composed of
both living and non living things and their interaction
with each other.
Ecosystem has two components namely:
BIOTIC – Living things
ABIOTIC- Non living things
“ECOSYSTEM DEVELOPMENT”
CAN ALSO BE TERMED AS
“ECOLOGICAL SUCCESSION”
DEFINATION FOR SUCCESSION
It is an orderly process of community development that is
reasonably directional and, therefore, predictable.
It results from modification of the physical environment by
the community; that is, succession is community controlled
even though the physical environment determines the
pattern, the rate of change, and often sets limits as to how
far development can go.
It culminates in a stabilized ecosystem in which maximum
biomass (or high information content) and symbiotic function
between organisms are maintained per unit of available
energy flow.
PRIMARY SUCCESSION
• Primary succession is ecological succession that
begins in essentially lifeless areas, such as regions
in which there is no soil or where the soil is
incapable of sustaining life (because of recent lava
flows, newly formed sand dunes, or rocks left from
a retreating glacier).
EXAMPLE
Plants growing on the
area which was affected
by the flow of lava is an
example of primary
succession.
SECONDARY SUCCESSION
secondary succession, type of ecological
succession (the evolution of a biological
community's ecological structure) in which plants
and animals recolonize a habitat after a major
disturbance—such as a devastating flood, wildfire,
landslide, lava flow, or human activity (e.g., farming
or road or building construction.
EXAMPLE
A destroyed forest
due to wild fire is an
example of secondary
succession.
In a few years there
will be vegetation
regrowing in this
area.

SECONDORY SUCCESSION

INVASIVE SPECIES
• An invasive species is an introduced organism that
becomes overpopulated and harms its new
environment.
• Although most introduced species are neutral or
beneficial with respect to other species, invasive
species adversely affect habitats and bioregions,
causing ecological, environmental, and/or
economic damage.
MESQUITE
Mesquite is a plant species introduced in India by
the British in order to the requirement of fuelwood .
Prosopis julifora is the scientific name for mesquite.
சீமைக்கருவேமை is the Tamil name for this species.
But now this invasive species has become a threat
to our country.
It was reported that this species has declined the
ground water level to the core.
