PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand
Committee EL-003, Electric Wires and Cables, to supersede AS 1747—1993, Reeling,
trailing and feeder cables used for mining—Repair and testing.
This Standard incorporates Amendment No. 1 (August 2005). The changes required by the
Amendment are indicated in the text by a marginal bar and amendment number against the
clause, note, table, figure or part thereof affected.
The objective of this Standard is to provide standard procedures for the repair and testing of
reeling, trailing and feeder cables used in mining applications, and to establish requirements
for the repair of cables which will ensure that the repaired cable is returned to a condition
as near as possible to the original design. It also sets out requirements for the fitting of
accessories to these cables.
This Standard differs from the previous edition in the following significant ways:
(a) It has been published as a Joint Australian/New Zealand Standard.
This is a free 7 page sample. Access the full version online.
(b) The Scope has been extended to metalliferous mines, open cut mines, quarries and
dredges and the fitting of accessories.
(c) The Foreword has been deleted.
(d) Procedures for exothermic welding and hard soldering have been included.
(e) The procedure for the repair of metallic screens without ferrules has been modified.
(f) The recommended vulcanizing conditions for insulation and sheath have been deleted.
(g) Plug and tail inspection has been included for surface mining applications.
(h) A summary of the pre-repair and post-repair tests to be carried out on both
underground and surface mining cables has been included.
(i) Additional test voltages have been provided for XR-EP-90 insulated cables for the
High Voltage Proof Tests.
(j) An additional Section has been included providing details about carrying out
temporary sheath repairs.
(k) An informative Appendix has been included providing guidance on assessing the
condition of a cable.
(l) The requirement to colour code repair tapes has been deleted and replaced with the
requirement to maintain a system of repair tape identification.
As new developments occur, these matters should be put before the Committee with the
view to revising the Standard to keep pace with technology.
The terms ‘normative’ and ‘informative’ have been used in this Standard to define the
application of the appendix to which they apply. A ‘normative’ appendix is an integral part
of a Standard, whereas an ‘informative’ appendix is only for information and guidance.
Statements expressed in mandatory terms in notes to tables and figures are deemed to be
requirements of this Standard.

1.1 SCOPE
This Standard sets out requirements for the repair and testing of reeling, trailing and feeder
cables used in underground coal mines, metalliferous mines, open cut mines, quarries and
dredges. It also sets out requirements for the fitting of accessories to these cables.
The Standard also details the inspection and replacement of plugs fitted to the cables and to
the test equipment used for testing cables.
This is a free 7 page sample. Access the full version online.
NOTE: The Standard applies particularly to reeling and trailing cables complying with
AS/NZS 1802 and AS/NZS 2802, and to cables with similar constructions complying with
AS/NZS 1972, but is not restricted in application to such cables.
Where type or code numbers are referred to in the Standard for trailing cables, the numbers are as
specified in AS/NZS 1802 and AS/NZS 2802.
