COORDINATION AND RESPONSE

TOPIC 2: TROPIC RESPONSES

Tropism and Auxins:

Tropism is ___________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________.
In plants, there are two main types of tropism:

1. ____________________________ – growth in response to light

2. ____________________________ – growth in response to gravity.

Both types of tropism can be positive or negative. For example, plants show positive phototropism. This means
that they are growing towards the light.

Gravitropism can be seen clearly if a seed is planted the wrong way up. The figure
shows a seed that was planted upside down. The root has curved all the way around
the seed in order to grow downwards. This happened under the soil, so it is not a
response to light; instead, it is a response to gravity.

The root shows ___________________________________________ – it grows in the

same direction as gravity’s pull.

The shoot shows __________________________________________: it has grown

upwards, in the opposite direction to gravity’s pull.

The movement of plants in response to light and gravity is controlled by a plant hormone called _____________.
Auxins are only found in plant tips (both shoot tips and root tips), where ________________________________.

Auxins affect the growth of a shoot tip in response to light.

 If the Sun is directly overhead, auxins will be distributed evenly through the tip of the plant. As a result,
the plant will grow straight up.
 If the Sun shines on one side of the plant, auxins will accumulate on the opposite side – the side that is
further away from the Sun. The auxins cause the cells in the plant tip to elongate (grow longer). If the
cells on one side of the plant are longer than the cells on the other side, the plant will bend. Because the
cells are longer on the darker side of the shoot, the plant will bend towards the Sun.
