Grade 10 Qtr1 Lesson 2
Lesson 2
I-OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards
Demonstrate understanding of the relationship among the location of volcanoes, earthquakes, epicentres, and
mountain ranges.
B. Performance Standards
1. Demonstrate ways to ensure disaster preparedness during earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruption.
2. Suggest way by which he/she can contribute to the government efforts in reducing damages due o
earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruption.
C. Learning Competency
Describe the different types of boundaries
Sub Competency/ies
1. Describe the distribution of active volcanoes, earthquake, epicenters and major mountain belts
2. Determine the scientific basis for dividing the lithospheric plates.
II. CONTENT
VOLCANOES,EARTHQUAKES,EPICENTERS AND MOUNTAIN RANGES
III. Learning Resources
Science Learner’s Material 10, page 11-13
Science Insight: Exploring Earth and Space, page 134-151
IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preliminary Activities
ELICIT- Check your vocabulary! Use the vocabulary word above to complete the following sentence
correctly. (earthquake, epicenter, focus, seismic wave, tsunami, volcano, lava, vent, crater, cinder cone
volcano, shield volcano, composite volcano)
. ENGAGE- Show photos of aftermath of earthquakes, volcanic eruption, tsunamis and ask student to
identify what kind of disaster will result with what is seen in the photos.
Show photos of known volcanoes and mountain ranges in the Philippines and in their locality
and ask them where this are located?
B. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills
EXPLORE- Perform the activity on Lets Mark the Boundaries (Science LM, page 11-13) and answer Questions.
Mark on a separate transparent sheet the location of volcanoes , earthquakes and mountain
ranges using different colors of pens. Then Place each sheet on top of each other.
What have you noticed? Compare the location of majority of the earthquake epicenters with
the location of the volcanoes and mountain ranges around the world.
C. Making Generalization and Abstraction about the Lesson
EXPLAIN- Post Activity Discussion
Ask student to present their outputs to the class.
1. How are earthquakes, volcanoes , and mountain ranges distributed on each map?
2. Where are they located?
3. Which places are unlikely to experience volcanic eruption and earthquakes?
ELABORATE
1. How will you relate the distribution of mountain ranges with the distribution of earthquake
epicenters?
2. What do you think is the basis of scientist in dividing the Earth’s lithosphere into several
plates?
D. Evaluating Learning:
EVALUATE -Look on the Maps posted on the board (Map of plate boundaries and regular world map)
1. What is the difference between the two maps?
2. What do you think is the basis for dividing the world in such a manner?
3. Where are epicenters located?
4. Where can we find volcanoes?
5. Where are mountain ranges be found?
E. Additional Activities for Remediation:
EXTEND- Research: Make a list of the most recent events of earthquake and its epicenter. Explore if
there are volcanoes or mountain ranges near these areas.
