QUARTER 3 – MODULE 2
MELC: Identifies representative artists as well as distinct characteristics of
media-based arts and design in the Philippines.
Part I
A. Introduction:
In the discussions of the previous quarter, you learned that computer manipulation has widened its
horizons in the field of art. It has introduced you to technology-based arts which are limitless especially to
today’s generation where gadgets like computer, laptops, cellphones, tablets and other devices are accessible.
In this quarter, modern approaches in photography, film, print, digital media, product and industrial design
will be explored as part of modern-based arts and design.
To start this module, you need to recall the elements of arts. These are line, shape, form, texture,
pattern, space and color. Line can be vertical, horizontal, curved or jagged. Shape can be two-dimensional
representation of objects like silhouette. Form is a three-dimensional representation of an object, usually
through the use of lighting and shadows. Texture is the use of lighting to bring out details of an object, making
it easy to see whether a surface is smooth or soft. Pattern is the use of repetition to create an interesting picture.
Color is the use of warm or cool colors to set mood and space that is either negative or positive space or it can
be used to make a statement. Often seen when using the rule of thirds.
B. Discussions:
The media-based art and design trends are photography, film, print media, digital media, and product and
industrial design (also called applied arts).
The rapid development of technology worldwide has brought the Philippines to innovative art forms
and progress from the traditional art of painting, sculpture, and architecture. The development of technology
helped Filipino artists not only in providing more options for creative expression but livelihood as well.
Filipino artists are now able to contribute more to the economy of the Philippines.
PHOTOGRAPHY
In comparison to the highly regarded arts of painting and sculpture, then, photography was not
immediately considered an art. But it was not long before the artistry of the 20th century photographers elevated
this “light writing” to an aesthetic form in its own right.
Two distinctive characteristics of photography
1. Immediacy
2. Detail
An image recorded by a camera has a sense of authenticity. Because the lens captures the image
objectively, the resulting photograph is regarded as ‘true to life’ and ‘of the moment.’ At the same time,
the camera takes in every detail of an image. Thus, the photograph has a sense of completeness.
Noteworthy Philippine Photographers
The Philippines has joined the rest of the world in applying the wonders of modern photography
to every aspect of life—from personal to professional to national to global. And with our country’s natural
beauty, a number of local photographers have taken on the Philippines and our people as a major focus of
their lenses.

FILM
Film is an art form that came in the late 1800s with “series photography” and the invention of celluloid
strip film. Its early name is “motion pictures”. The development of still photography came in the late 1800s
with series photography and the invention of the celluloid strip film. The moving images led to the rise of
Kinetoscope, a peepshow cabinet with an eyehole where the first movies were developed.
Characteristics of Films
1. Director conceptualizes the scenes and directs the acting, supervises the cinematography and
finally the editing and sound dubbing.
32
2. Acting the art of acting for film where actors had to learn to express themselves without the
exaggerated facial expressions and gestures used on stage and learn to deliver their lines naturally
and believably.
3. Cinematography is the art of film camera work or the work behind the scenes.
4. Film Editing is the art of selecting the precise sections of film. Visual, emotional and sound effects
5. Film Production/Set design are recreated in physical terms such as location, scenery, sets, lighting,
costume and props.

PRINT MEDIA
Included here are large scale publications such as newspapers, magazines, journals, books of all kinds,
as well as smaller scale posters, brochures, flyers, menus, and the like.
Advertising is one major field that still relies heavily on print media like newspapers, magazines,
posters, brochures, and flyers. Comic Book is also referred as komiks and is a field of print media that
highlights the artistic gifts of Filipinos. Its popularity began in 1920’s through the Liwayway magazine.
Digital media are any media that are encoded in machine-readable formats. It is a counterpart form
technique of manipulation for comics. Nowadays, readers find access on electronic books that so called
“ebooks” like wattpad through the use of gadgets.
ANIMATION
Animation is the art of making inanimate objects appear to move. Animation is an artistic impulse
that long predates the movies. The promotion of the country’s animation is supported by the different
organizations and association. 5

Characteristics of Animation
1. Timing. This is the most important thing. You should be able to judge timing of the movement of
everything you see in reality and duplicate it in your animation. With timing you can make
your object look sad, heavy, light, happy with only a good timing.
2. Slow in and Slow out. Or Ease in Ease Out. It’s the natural thing in this world where object would
start moving and stop gradually not abrupt. Except in some extreme cases.
3. Arcs. A movement would naturally go with arcs not straight. Look at your arm, notice how it move
when you want to reach something. It would moving in arcs because they have joints.
4. Follow Through and Overlapping.
5. Secondary Action. It’s cleverly not a main movement. Ever saw people standing in a Bus Stop?
They never standing still, they do some small action. The context is standing waiting for bus,
but they might scratch their head, or move their jacket form left to right, etc. Got it? Just a
small action. Even a breath is considered Secondary Action.
6. Squash and strecth. This one is tough to see in realistic world. It may do some squash and stretch
but in very small amount that your eyes will never be noticed. My eyes also. Except very
flabby thing.
7. Exaggeration. The heart of cartoony animation. It takes ordinary animation to a level where it
catches the eye. I believe you already know this. If not, you wouldn’t bother learning
animation. Two samples below are just simple examples. One is ordinary move, it’s appeared
right because it has secondary movement, overlapping etc but lacks of eye catching-ish thing.
Another example is exaggerated version.
6
5
8. Straight Ahead and Pose to pose. This one is addressed for 2D animation. But we can translate it
for 3D where we work in stages. I always work in stages. Means that I do some rough timing,
then if it’s considered okay, I refine and refine and refine, and save it in different name. This
way, I can match the time needed first5and refine whatever necessary. It is considered Pose to
pose style.
9. Anticipation. A movement or act or scene preceding another scene or act or movement. The
purpose is to make viewer ‘aware’ of what will happen next. It’s common in Horror movies
that a character has back shoot camera following that character. Purpose? For creating tense.
Or in Cartoon movie when a character jump off a cliff it usually does some hopeless grin, the
“I’m doomed” style, then fall behind. Or in the example below, a character sway far back
then.
10. Staging. This principle isn’t directly related with motion, as it more visually related. The most
famous example would be ‘magician pose’, if you recall (and if you ever watched one), the
magician always stands with most of his gesture visible. This meant for that viewer will easily
understand what is happening (and hide his/her tricks as well).
11. Personality. A character should have distinct from the other character. I believe that no one in this
planet in the same time share same personality. Even twins have different personality no matter
small it is. If we clearly define what personality a character has, it will drive the character to
move in its own movement characteristic.
12. Appeal. Well, this one is a bit difficult to explain, as it more ‘feeling’ related. But let’s see
previous example, where a robot walking in cocky style. It has more appeal than ‘mere’
walking, no matter good the cycle or secondary or follow thru.
Innovation plays a key role in the development of sustainable methods of both production and living
because in both cases it may be necessary to create alternatives to conventional ways of doing things that were
developed before environmental consideration was central to most people’s framework for making decisions.
An industrial design is the result of human creativity in the field of art; the appearance of a product of
industrial or handicraft production, in other words, design. Industrial designs are characteristic combinations
of shapes, colors and lines that give a product its unique, distinctive appearance, that makes it attractive to the

C. Readings
What is an Industrial Design?
An industrial design refers to the artistic and design solution of a product of industrial or handicraft
production that determines the appearance of the product. The industrial design is provided with legal
protection, if it is new, original.
The industrial design is recognized as original if its essential characteristics determine the creative
nature of the product's features. Significant features include, in particular, shape, configuration, ornament and
color combination.
Industrial designs are an important means of protecting the interests of the business entity, since
appearance is often a determining factor when a consumer choosing a particular product. Given that the
technical data of similar-purpose products manufactured by different manufacturers may coincide, the
differences in their appearance can be of decisive importance. In this regard, the acquisition of a patent
monopoly on an industrial design is a strategic task of the manufacturer.
