POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS OF LINEAR GENERATOR
1) To supply power grid by using wave energy

Almost all wave energy devices proposed so far utilises conventional high speeds , rotary generators to convert mechanical energy to electricity ,. several imaginative solutions have been developed to accomplish the conversion of the wave's bouncing motion to the rotary moion demanded by the generator.these power take off schemes are expensive both to construct and to maintain and they are often very vulnerable to extreme weather. The main difference of a linear generator to conventional generator is that the motion of the rotor is linear which makes it possible to couple motion directly to the recriprocating , vertical motion of the waves which eliminates the need of the complex power take off scheme and gear boxes.The system consists of a buoy , floating on surface of the ocean connected with a row to the rotor ie a piston with permanent magnent the piston , inturn is moving in coil where electricity is induced.
2)Tubular-type Linear Generator for Free-Piston Engine

The free-piston engine system has high efficiency and reliability in the energy conversion process because of theabsence of the mechanical devices like a crankshaft, a connecting rod, etc. The linear generator plays a very important role in this free-piston engine system to realize high efficient system The tubular-type generator has higher efficiency and reliability than the flat type one because of its structural merits. The amount of the leakage flux is small and the rotation of the piston does not affect the electric characteristics of the linear generator. This method can reduce the detent force and also improve the output waveform.
3) smooth motion drives

A linear generator can generate a voltage proportional to the speed of a movable member or rotor and enable the movable member to be smoothly moved.The linear generator includes the first part having permament magnetsfixed to a yoke which are magnetized normally, and a second part having a coil across the bobbins and a housing enclosing the coil,a pluraty of magnetic poles are provided between the magnets and coils.
4) Harvesting human motion to power small electronic drives or sensorsOne of the most fascinating application of linear generator is its use in utilizing energy from locomotion to drive daily use electronic devices like body sensors, wrist watches. The generator may be implemented in soul of shoe , behind the back belt etc, and is able to produce power up to 10's of mw which is sufficient to power various low power devices. The experimental results have shown that such a linear generator can produce 300 microwatt to 2.5 mW power from human body motion. There has been growing interest in vibrational energy scavenging as a means to provide power to wireless sensor nodes. For example, the research in MIT showed that a liner generator integrated in shoe souls could provide 1-2 mW average power during walking.
ADVANTAGES OF LINEAR GENERATORS:1. In low speed drives, conversion of linear to rotary motion is not practically applicable but linear generators provides a solution by converting linear motion directly in to energy. 2.Linear generators are low power consuming and a potential source of electricity for future.
MOST IMPORTANT APPLICATION :In my view the application of linear generator is as the harvestor of wave energy to contribute in the national power grid , and because of the following reasonsIn
the age of fast depleting fossil fuels and other conventional sources of energy, the efficient utilization of non conventional sources of energy is the only hope of coming century. linear generator used in wave energy harvesting is less expensive and complex and has a significantly reduced maintainance cost,so with the invent of linear generator, wave and tidal energy is becoming promising as a potential source of energy.
