Brief Introduction
This lesson introduces the materials and tools in maintaining electrical flat iron. It also provides
learning activities about the parts and functions and operation of a flat iron. It contains the pictorial and
schematic diagram of the thermostat assembly of the flat iron.
This lesson delivers to the learners the fundamental knowledge in the operation of a flat iron. The
learning activities improve the critical thinking and skills of students in determining the parts and
functions of a flat iron. It also provides lessons in maintaining it using hand tools and materials.

Activity

Basic Parts of Electric Flat Iron

1. AC line cord is used to connect the unit to a power source.

2. Selector Switch is a type of switch used to select

the amount of heat required in ironing different
types of fabrics. It can be a rotary or slide type.

3. Thermal Fuse is a safety protective device used to

cut-off the circuit when the temperature rises at

6
above normal as designed for the unit. It also
protects the unit from damage when overheating
and a short circuit occurs.

4. A heating element is a form of nichrome

wire assembled properly inside the high
temperature metallic tube in flat iron to provide
heat.
5. Handle is the part of a flat iron by which
ahold the controls for the thermostat
and steam release.
6. Soleplate is a base metal that serves as the fabric
pressing part made of metal where the heating
element is placed.

7. Body/Case is used to protect the internal parts

of the flat iron and serves as a shield for the heat
and protection of the hand of the user.
8. Neon/Pilot Lamp is used to indicate
that electricity is flowing along with the heating
element.
9.Thermostat Assembly is a part of an electric flat
iron used to regulate the temperature.

10.Electronic Control is the added feature of

modern electric flat iron which can act as a timer
or automatic power cut-off switch for additional
protection.

Pictorial Diagram of Bimetallic strip: Thermostat of Electric Flat Iron

Picture A presents the iron at normal temperature. While picture B shows the iron when becomes too hot.

7
Working Principle of Electric Flat Iron
The bimetallic strip in picture (a) stays in physical contact with the contact point at moderate
temperature. However, when the temperature of the iron above a certain limit as shown in picture (b), the
strip tends to bend upward towards the contact spring. Then, the strip stops to be physically connected to
the contact point, and at this point, the current flow is cut as the circuit or contact point opens.
Activity 1

Written below are some of the tools and materials in maintaining electric flat iron. Analyze and arrange
the jumbled words as described by the following statement.

current and resistance.
___________2. It is use for cutting, holding, bending, and reposition of wires. (NGLO EONS
RESILP)
___________3. It is a protective gear use to cover the whole hand.
(LOVEG)
___________4. It is a type of brush used to clean sensitive electronics.
(NNO-CSIATT HBUSR)
___________5. It is used to melt the solder and permanently bond two workpieces.
(NGLSODRIE NORI)
