"Cell Organelles (RAFT) ": Genetics Module 1 Lesson 2
Dear Heart,
I am a cell living in the body of Reymart. Reymart takes good care of himself but he needs some
help. I am a cell living in his muscles and, boy, some days he exercises and I need more oxygen to
be comfortable.
I was hoping that you might pump more blood my way and make sure you send it to the lungs for
oxygen first. When it gets to me, I feel like I have just been given a new lease on life. I get rid of
some wastes and combine that oxygen with food to release more energy and I could just keep on
moving his body as long as he wants. In fact, I feel like the energizer bunny when that happens. I
hope you will consider this request, after all, you are part of the body and when he exercises, it
helps you, too.

Genetics Module 1 Lesson 2
Ѻ Suppo rt : The cell wall provides mechanical strength and support. It also controls the direction
of cell growth.
Ѻ Wit hst and t urgo r pre ssure : Turgor pressure is the force exerted against the cell
wall as the contents of the cell push the plasma membrane against the cell wall. This pressure helps
a plant to remain rigid and erect, but can also cause a cell to rupture.
Ѻ Re gulat e gro wt h: The cell wall sends signals for the cell to enter the cell cycle in order to
divide and grow.
Ѻ Re gulat e d if f usio n: The cell wall is porous allowing some substances,
including proteins, to pass into the cell while keeping other substances out.
Ѻ C o mmunic at io n: Cells communicate with one another via plasmodesmata (pores or
channels between plant cell walls that allow molecules and communication signals to pass between
individual plant cells).
Ѻ Pro t e c t io n: The cell wall provides a barrier to protect against plant viruses and other
pathogens. It also helps to prevent water loss.
Ѻ St o rage : The cell walls stores carbohydrates for use in plant growth, especially in seeds.
