SACRAMENTS AND SACRAMENTALS

Sacraments - efficient signs of the grace.


-Visible sign of an invisible reality.
*The seven sacraments were instituted by Jesus Christ.

Three Essential Elements:


1. Minister – the one who administer the sacrament. (People)
2. Matter – visible objects
3. Form - the wordings

*The Church celebrates the sacraments during the liturgical year.


*The Church uses four liturgical colors.

Sacramentals - sacred signs used in sacraments.

Three kinds of sacramentals.


1. Blessings
2. Exorcism
3. Consecration / Religious professions.

The 7 Sacraments
1. Baptism
2. Confirmation
3. Holy Eucharist
4. Penance / Reconciliation
5. Ordination / Holy Orders
6. Matrimony / Marriage
7. Anointing of the Sick
BAPTISM
*We must be baptized in order to be saved.

Fruits of Baptism
1. The original sin is forgiven.
2. Become children of God.
3. Become members of the Church.
4. Receive the Character
Minister – Bishop, Priest and Deacon.
Matter – Water.

*Receive baptism only once (1).


*Baby- baptized in the faith of the church, their parents and Godparents.
*Adult- before receiving Baptism must undertake the catechumenate.
*Catechumenate- period of preparation for the faith, commandments, sacraments,
liturgy and community life of the Church.
*Any person who believes in Christ, knows the Apostolic Creed, the Ten
Commandments, the Seven Sacraments and the Our Father, can be baptized.

FORM
-The celebrant makes the sign of the Cross on the forehead of the children and
invites parents and Godparents to do the same. The sign of the Cross means that the
children now belong to Christ.
-The celebrant sends away the power of Satan with the prayer of exorcism.
-The celebrant immerses the child in water for three times or pours water on his
head.
-Anointing with the sacred chrism oil.
-Clothing with white garment – symbol of the purity of their soul from original sin.
-Lighting of candle – from Paschal candle. Symbol of our faith in Jesus Christ.
-Final Blessing – Our Father.
CONFIRMATION
*The confirmation in the Spirit took place for the first time on Pentecost.

Fruits of Confirmation
1. Receive the Holy spirit.
2. Become soldier of Christ.
Minister – Bishop (Priest can administer only in danger of death or in special case)
Matter – The Laying of hands.

*Only the Christian Catholic can receive the sacrament of confirmation.


*The name Christ and Christians come from the word “Chrism” which means
anointed.

FORM
-Renewal of the Baptismal Promises.
-Laying of hands.
- Anointing with the sacred chrism oil.

HOLY EUCHARIST
*Jesus instituted the sacrament of the Eucharist during the Last Supper.
*Eucharist is a Greek word which means “Thanksgiving”.
*Eucharist is also called:
1. The Lord’s Supper
2. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
3. The Memorial of Jesus Resurrection
*The bread and wine, at the moment of the consecration, become the real body and
blood of Christ.
Fruits of the Eucharist
1. Receive the body and blood of Christ.
2. Repair the sins (Eucharist has the power to forgive the venial sins.).
3. Communion with the Church
4. Receive eternal life.
Minister – Bishop and Priest. (“In persona Christ” means the person of Christ.)
Matter – Bread and Wine

*Every Christian Catholic can receive Holy Communion.


Note: If we receive Holy communion with a mortal sin in our soul, we commit
sacrilege.
*The Church invites us to receive the Holy Communion any time we attend the Holy
Mass.
*If we really love the Lord, we not only attend the Holy Mass, but we also visit Him in
the Blessed Sacrament.

PENANCE
*All of us need the sacrament of penance because all of us are sinners.
Two Kinds of Sins
1. Venial Sin – lesser sin that does not result in a complete separation from God
2. Mortal Sin – grave action its quality leads to a complete separation from God.

Fruits of Penance
1. Remits all sins.
2. Give us the sanctifying grace. (Sanctifying grace is the communion with God.)
3. Reconcile with the Church.
Note: Indulgence is the remission of the temporal punishment of sin.

Minister – Bishop and Priest.


Matter – Confession of sins.
Absolution – formal release from punishment by Priest.
*Every Christian Catholic can receive the sacrament of Penance.
*We must go to confession any time we commit a mortal sin.

ORDINATION / HOLY ORDER


*Jesus instituted the sacrament of ordination during the Last Supper.
*When we receive the vocation from the Lord, we should have the courage to
abandon everything and follow him. (Vocation – it is the “calling” – something
specific that God calls us to.)

Fruits of Ordination
1. Diaconate – Deacon means servant because their first duty is to serve the
Church. (Assist the priest and Bishop during the Holy Mass).
2. Priesthood – Priest, his mission is to teach, sanctify and govern the church.
Religious Priest – those are belonging to a religious congregation.
Diocesan Priest – those are belonging to a diocese / archdiocese.
Priest also called “Presbyters” which means the elders.
3. Episcopacy – Bishops are the successors of the apostles. Their duty is to guide
their diocese as Holy Shepherds.

Note: The Bishop with outstanding human and spiritual talents are
Consecrated to Cardinals. (Cardinals elect the new Pope).
Pope – is the bishop of Rome, the head of the church. The successor of
St. Peter.
*The Ordination communicates the grace of the Holy Spirit.
Three main duties of Deacon, Priest and Bishop:
1. Teaching – by means of catechesis and of preaching.
2. Sanctifying – through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and Liturgy.
3. Governing – taking care their people in their congregation.

Minister – Pope and Bishop.


Matter – Imposition / laying of Hands. (Say the prayer of consecration)
*All the Priest must make the vow of chastity and cannot be married.

FORM
-The Rite of Ordination. (Ordination take place during the mass, after the Homily.)

MATRIMONY / MARRIAGE
*Marriage - is a sacrament because it is sign of the love between Christ and Church.
- is a covenant of love between a man and a woman.

*Before marriage, the two engaged persons should receive the sacrament of
Confirmation and of Penance.

Three Fundamental properties of Marriage:


1. Unity – cannot marry more than one at the same time.
2. Indissolubility – cannot divorce from spouse. (Adultery - divorce your spouse
and marries another)
3. Fecundity – procreation of children.

Fruits of Marriage
1. Perpetual and Exclusive Bond.
2. Sacramental grace
Minister – Two Spouses. (Note: Priest is only the witness on the side of Church.)

Matter – Exchange of Consent. (Consent is the act through which a man and a
woman profess to unite themselves in marriage for the whole life.)

Invalid Marriage
1. Consanguinity
2. Sacred Ordination
3. Perpetual Religious Vows
4. Former Religious Marriage
5. Former Civil Marriage
6. Violence
7. Error
8. Deceit
9. Crime
10. Age
11. Perpetual Antecedent Impotence

FORM
-Preparation of the necessary documents – Certificate of Baptism and Confirmation.
-Marriage Banns – The same parish priest will announce the marriage banns for 3
consecutive Sundays.
-Exchange of Consent
- Blessing of the Arraes and Rings
-Cord is a symbol of the burdens of matrimony to be carried in common.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK


*Jesus came to heal the sick in the body and in the spirit.
*We can receive the Anointing of the Sick many times.

Fruits of the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick


1. Confers the sacramental grace on the sick person.

Minister – Bishop and Priest


Matter – Blessed Oil

*Receive the anointing of the sick in danger of death because of sickness or old age.

*The anointing of the sick should be prepared by the confession, and followed by the
reception of Holy Communion.
