Reflection Paper 2 – Soylent Green Movie

1. What are the environmental problems shown in the film?

• The environmental factors shown in the film mostly comprised of the lack of
resources. People are so scarce with food, water and shelter due to the increasing
population and the environment has been filled with pollution that the sky has
turned into a green color (due to greenhouse gases). Moreover, there are no plants
to be seen, there are a lot of cars everywhere, and all kinds of pollution can be
seen in the setting of the film (air, noise, water, and land pollution.)

2. Discuss why such environmental problems occurred. What happened to the

resources from the ecosystems which are previously being provided to the
people?
• The main reason why such environmental problems occurred is due to the
overpopulation (which in the movie was over 40 million in New York alone), that
has caused the natural resources to be very limited and scarce to the point that a
single beef or a jar of strawberry has cost over 100 dollars. There are also big
factories that emit large amount of black smoke that further contributes to the
already problematic air pollution, in addition with the cars, planes and other types
of vehicles. There are also no plants anymore, maybe because everyone just cut
them out of hunger. All of these factors piled up to be the end result of the setting
of the movie; an apocalyptic, depressed and imbalanced society where all
resources are no longer available, and those who can only afford it can be
privileged enough to acquire it.

3. Describe the agencies involved in the environmental problems, their role, and
their actions.
• As stated in the movie, the Soylent Corporation is of the agencies that created
the Soylent Green, and they are the one who used the corpse of people as the
ingredient for their food technology. Other than them, there are the New York
Police who Thorn is working for, in which was the person to identify and uncover
the real truth about Soylent Green. Other than that, there are Sol’s colleagues
who are known as the Books, and mentioned also in the movie are the Council of
Nations, which could the organization of different leaders of countries that are
involved with resolving these environmental issues
4. What is your assessment on the solutions applied in the film in terms of
technology to address the environmental problems? Are the problems addressed
or not? Justify your answer.
• For me, the technology provided of the government (the Soylent Corporation) to
the people as the replacement of food (a processed food named Soylent Green)
is a terrible solution. Not only it doesn’t have nutritious properties, at the end of the
movie when Thorn knew that it is made up of people, it became clear to me that
the government cannot address the environmental problems, so they just turned
to the most gruesome and terrible decision of recycling dead people. They will do
anything just for them to keep their political powers, and will make despicable
decisions like that rather than actually thinking of better solutions to make the
environment better.

5. If you were given a chance to be the engineer in the film, describe the
technological solutions you would recommend.
• If I were given a chance to be the engineer in the film, I would like to create a
machine that could recycle the different garbage that are throwing out and making
it as a source of energy for other machines to work, as it could be a constant source
of energy so that there is no need for factories to be working. Also, since there are
very scarce resources, it could be efficient and adaptive to create a machine that
could make us food by simply putting some of the basic materials that we could
see in the world like soil and water. With the help of science, we can bioengineer
it to create a better Soylent Green, with the proper nutrients that the Soylent Green
lacked and without the expense of using people’s corpses.
