4 GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE HARDWARE utilities, where the de-polarizing effect of the soil actually makes it possible
to detect all the sub-services, regardless their orientation.
Stream UP is GPR array system, towable by a vehicle (Fig. 1).
The system is completed by a control unit (the SCU, Supply and Control Unit)
The maximum acquisition speed of 60 km/h introduces a strong element of that houses an industrial PC for data storage on board, which interfaces with
differentiation with respect to the radar products previously on market and a remote PC, WiFi connected, operated by the user in the cars cabin. The HMI

typically requires an ability to investigate at least the first 1.5 m of depth, and UP.
to achieve this performance the antennas are almost always ground-
coupled.

Because of the above, the so-called "rack" system has been developed by IDS
GeoRadar for the Stream UP radar system. It is carried on the towing hook of
a vehicle, like modern bicycle carriers for cars, and can be towed close to the
ground but not in direct contact with it. Hence, increasing the velocity both
in acquisition as well as in transport mode.

The above set-up allows, on one hand operating the system at high speed
(up to 60 Km/h), but also limiting the consumption of the protective skids
and reducing the frequency of impacts with the ground of the whole
hardware.

The radar system consists of 5 couples of antenna modules, emitting at

different polarization and frequency, and connected in a continuous chain.
The general concept of the Stream UP systems is to detect the main
underground services along the road and their connections, by fully covering
the area to be investigated. For this reason, a double array has been

designed, one with a higher frequency in transversal polarization (compared
to the scan direction) - called HH600 MHz - for metal surface subservices (e.g.
gas pipe), and one with a lower frequency in longitudinal polarization - called
VV200 MHz - for plastic surface subservices (plastic pipes have higher RCS in
longitudinal polarization than in transverse polarization) and for deeper

• The system requires a plate repeating the vehicle plate that
transports it, and it must be requested to the Transport Department
(Civil Motorization). The user is responsible for this activity and must
make sure that the plate complies with local traffic laws.
• The system is equipped with an optical unit (taillights) assembled
with a 13-pin standard electrical interface. The user is responsible for
this activity and must make sure that the taillight complies with local Fig. 2 – system packaging

these can be re-positioned at the end of the chain and the new footprint will
be recognized by the acquisition software (see par 11.1). Hence, the footprint
can change, in case of a faulty antenna module, and this can be handled by
the user, in case of need.

4.4 Mechanical structure

The Stream UP mechanical part consists of a frame suspended on the car's
tow hook. The mechanical system integrates a commercial tow hook for
bicycle carriers which has been redesigned to better withstand the applied
load.

The hooking system integrated in the mechanical system is compatible with

ISO 1103: 2007 standard ball hooks only (50mm). There are other types of
hooks for motor vehicles, not standardized, and no adaptation system is
provided to connect the mechanical system. These not-standard hooks are
not compatible and must not be used with the system.

The whole mechanical system is composed of 4 macro-parts (Fig. 15 and

Fig. 15 – rendering and exploded view

• One Central fixed frame: this part, includes the hooking system for the
vehicle tow hook, the SCU, the GPS pole support, the sliding guides of the
moving part, odometer (doppler encoder), altimeter (ultrasonic sensor),
mobile part lifting system with adjustable limit switches. It also includes a

for shock absorption, a system for hooking the fixed frame and lock it in the
most raised position, to be used in transport mode.

• One Central moving antenna frame: this part, includes a frame that holds
one antenna module 200 MHz and one antenna module 600 MHz; also, the
system connecting this part to the Central Fixed Frame, uses a damper that
decouples the antenna from the frame. The frame also includes the
mechanical system for attaching protective shells and the optical unit
coupling system.

The central frame of the antennas is constrained to the moving central

frame, allowing the inclination adjustment of the mobile part, to compensate
the lowering of the vehicle shock absorbers and to restore the horizontal
system trim.

• Two Lateral frames (left and right): It includes the mechanical frame that
supports two antenna modules 200 MHz and two antenna modules 600 MHz
at each side (left and right) and the related suspension systems. At each of Fig. 16 – Stream up subcomponents
the side of the frame, a wheel for shock absorption is mounted. These wheels
are removable with a quick release system for an easier storage and handling
of the system.

4.5 Lifting System The adjustment up and down of the system height, is done through a winch
installed in the central frame (Fig. 19).
The mechanical system has two main positions: Operational mode (Fig. 17,
with three Operational mode heights as specified at page 53) and Transport WARNING: CRUSHING HANDS AND FINGERS
mode (Fig. 18). The two modes mainly differ from each other because of the During the adjustment of the system by the winch there is a

PRECAUTIONS: To mount the system, the user must always

wear protective gloves and safety boots.

Fig. 19 – Lifting systems

To check the height of the system from the ground, there is an altimeter
(Ultrasonic diffuse-reflection sensor) at the rear of the system. The altimeter
outputs a voltage and this value is then automatically converted into height
(in mm), as in Fig. 20:

4.7 GNSS pole tilt adjustment

The GNSS pole is positioned on the fixed frame by a self-locking ball pin on
the lower end of the pole (1 in Fig. 22) and by a clamp system with manual
lever operation at the base of the SCU (2 in Fig. 22). The clamp system is fixed
to the fixed frame with 3 bolts which pass through a circular slot obtained on
the side of the fixed frame (indicated with red arrows in Fig. 23).

When Stream UP is mounted on the vehicle, there is a lowering and an

inclination of the system downwards (System for adjusting the inclination

and central wheel position); To keep the GNSS pole vertical, the user should

and then tighten the 3 bolts.
When Stream Up system is mounted on the vehicle hook, because of its own
weight, it produces an expected lowering and an inclination of the whole The adjustment system allows for 15° inclination (forward) and given the

The battery inside the SCU is only used to prevent the system from turning
off when a voltage drops occur due to the absorption of the starter motor.
On this purpose, it is recommended not the leave the SCU turned on when

not operating and when the car’s engine is off, as they lead to SCU battery
pack discharge.

1 2 From a junction box, a cable with standard 13-pin connector for the rear
socket starts. The SCU power cable is attached to the same box and then the
5 4 cable, always 13 standard poles, of the rear light unit. In this way radar and
lights are powered simultaneously.

This way of powering the system means that the radar system can be
switched on only with the car ignition on.

The SCU can also be powered by a standard lead-acid battery with a capacity
of at least 100 Ah. It has to be connected to the same "battery" connector on
the SCU, but the active poles of the connector will be different, because in
the case of car power supply it will be necessary to recondition the + 12V
through a DC / DC, in case of battery power supply the voltage is supplied
directly and the measurement carried out by the DAD gives an indication of

8 SPATIAL POSITIONING IN STREAM-UP

In general, the whole data acquisition system of the Stream UP includes two
PCs: one embedded (in the SCU) Single Board Computer (SBC) which provides
the main functions of data logger for both HW control and diagnosis; and one
control PC which is the user interface connected via WiFi. The simplified,
above-mentioned architecture, is shown in Fig. 95:

Fig. 96 – positioning configurations available

8.1 How to use a Smart GPS

To pair a Smart GPS to the Stream UP, the User need an application installed
in the field PC to be able to receive and transmit data. One example is the
Fig. 95 – system interfaces architecture Leica GG04, which uses the "Zeno Connect" application.

The above architecture merely relates with the GPR data and the user can As mentioned, the application that manages the GPS runs on the field PC,
select different positioning systems to perform a new data acquisition (Fig. together with the Stream UP acquisition SW. The SW is therefore able to
96). In particular: receive the NMEA strings (Fig. 97) from the Smart GPS.

• Smart GPS; For the pairing procedure (and requirements) of the Smart GPS with Stream
UP, please refer to the user’s manual of the Smart GPS used.
• GNSS;

• TPS;

• Doppler;

GNSS). In this case, the User must use the doppler encoder integrated in the
Fig. 100 – Connection of the Doppler encoder
system or a wheel encoder (Fig. 28) to trigger the GPR signal.

In the case of using a wheel encoder (Fig. 28 and Fig. 100), this must be fixed,
by using the proper size nuts, to the car’s rear wheel first, and then plugged
to the SCU.

In the case of using only the encoder, with no GNSS or TS, the user shall not
visualize the actual position of the system, but only the progress of the
georadar data.

9.6.1 How data quality and acquisition speed relate
The scan step is defined as the measure of the distance between every
consecutive radar trace displayed in the radargrams (Fig. 117). Given the

8 cm, whereas for the AM600 antenna, is about 4 cm.

The Stream UP GPR emits more than a single georadar trace in a single scan
step, depending on the system velocity, and by performing the average of
12. To Select a specific swath, it should be used the icon. these traces (up to 16), it is possible to increase the SNR (Signal to Noise
Ratio). This sampling and averaging are the so-called Dynamic Stacking.

By diminishing the acquisition velocity, will increase the Dynamic Stacking,

hence will increase the SNR, and the penetration depth will increase too.
13.To Delete a swath pressing the icon .
On the other hand, the higher is the number of the radar traces recorded,
the higher is the SNR and the higher is the penetration depth.

depth and signal resolution by lowering the acquisition velocity, as the
hardware stacking is automatically adjusted by the system. Vice versa, the
penetration depth shall decrease as the acquisition velocity increases. The
above, of course also depends upon soil conditions.
15.Finally, to Close the current project the icon must be selected.
The Stream UP and the uMap software, optimizes the hardware staking and
the trace resolution, by adapting automatically to the changing acquisition
conditions.
