I’ve watch I am Sam
1. Describe the main character in the movie you watched?

The main character in the movie I am Sam is Sam Dawson. He is a father of Lucy. He raised Lucy
on his own when his wife left him after she gave birth. He is middle age man who loved Lucy
very much. He is working as a staff in a coffee shop for a living. Sam and Lucy lived in an
apartment and Sam has 4 very close friends.
2. What is his/her exceptionality? Describe

Sam Dawson is a person with intellectual disability. At his age he was acting and thinking like a 7
year old boy. He do not know to raise a baby. For example in one scene, Lucy was still a baby
and she was crying, a girl from the other apartment name Annie noticed them and she help Sam
on how to take care Lucy, on feeding for example. Annie told Sam that the baby should be given
milk every 2 hours. Another example why he is exceptional is he is having difficulty in reading.
Like a young man, Sam likes her daughter Lucy to read him a book every night. In addition, He
does not easily understand what other people are saying. He also like playing with her daughter
like other kids do.
3. What problem/ difficulties did the main character experience?

Sam had a problem about the custody of Lucy. Since he is mentally challenged, they are
questioning Sam's ability if he can take care of Lucy. The other party wanted Lucy for adaption,
however, Sam ask Rita (judge) for help him win back Lucy, but Rita was did not agree first
because she knew Sam cannot pay for his professional fee as a judge. In the end Rita agreed to
help Sam just to show to her colleague that she was helping people for free. However, the court
needs someone to testify that Sam are capable to raise Lucy, that he can send Lucy to school
and the court was worried about Lucy when she reach puberty. There is Annie, the Godparent of
Lucy who witnessed on how Sam love and care for Lucy. In addition, Sam also have 4 friends
who are all mentally challenged as well. His friends try to tell the court how Sam is a great
Father to Lucy. However, since they are also mentally challenge, they cannot provide a fruitful
and reliable statement.
4. Who provided support? What support did he/ she get from his/ her environment?
Sam got all the support and help from her judge Rita. She really wanted Lucy back to Sam. Since
Sam is mentally challenge, Rita help Sam, she trained Sam on how and what he will answer on
the court. Like on the one scene, after their trial, they went to Rita’s house. Rita did not sleep
and he teach Sam what and how to answer the court. The court was questioning the ability of
Sam on how he will send Lucy to tutorial. Rita told Sam that he should tell the court that he
found an institution who can give a free tutorial for Lucy. Rita also tried to look for Sam’s friend
who they can use as a witness and give some statement on how Sam is being a good father and
provider to Lucy. Firs witness is Sam’s manager on the coffee shop. He said that Sam was very
good and they will promote Sam on his work. The other witnesses are Annie and his 4 other
friends. Annie also tried her best to showcase in the court how Sam is being a good father to
Lucy, as well as his 4 friends.
