LESSON: ELEMENTS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF TRENDS

THE DEFINITION:

Mega Trends are a larger pattern of trend that scales global shifts which
reshape and transform our lives, society and the way we do
businesses. It involves major restructuring, factual and are
often supported by verifiable data. It offers the biggest
challenges and opportunities, as it encompasses countries, one
after another.

Macro Trends The Children of Mega Trends. Lasts for 5 to 10 years and known
as “consumer trends”, but not tangible. Marco trends sustains
a larger scale than Micro Trend. Macro trends are the basis for
Micro Trend. It is the changing needs of the consumers.
Common needs like jobs, transportation, etc.

Micro Trends also known as “market trend”, are common business

management. Although, micro trends are always based on a
mega trend / Macro Trend, it runs the opposite by advocating
localization by recognizing that people and the community have
never been more sophisticated and more knowledgeable about
the choices they make in their everyday lives. Lasts for a about
3-5 years.
As established in the previous lessons, identifying trends and keeping up with
its series has been a challenge for every company regardless of the type of trend they
are following. As trends are long term directions and runs a pattern of gradual
change, companies have to predict possibilities in order to survive long term.
Therefore, knowing how and when trends will emerge provides an opportunity to plan
and make a move ahead. Trends can be predicted through the presence of its
elements and characteristics.

Trends elements and characteristics may include but may not be limited to the
following:
Duration of time – the lifespan of
products, idea, or events do not quickly
go away. Its popularity sticks for a long
period of time, so innovations and
development are in the basket.

Need or Timely – It is obviously useful

and easily appreciated. It emerges in the
times of need or is perceived as a need
at the time of its emergence. It answers
basic needs and aims to improve life and
make it easier.

Acceptability – appeals broadly and is

very applicable. Trends just as fads also
emerges quickly and is accepted by the
many. It instantly adapts to the taste and convinces to jump into the bandwagon.
Cultural Basis – being rooted into people’s beliefs, values, and traditions, that is also
the reason how it is easily accepted. It is familiar and runs beneath the individuals’
background and culture and blends with its environment. It is basically part of life
and touches the sense of history.

Transitory Changes (increase or decrease) – There are no trends without a change.

Trends shows a predicting changes whether an increase or a decrease in a particular
idea, event, condition, etc.

Innovative and Evolving – Although innovations cannot be considered a trend, a

trend cannot exist truly without it. Series of trends have innovations as its basic
stand. An upgrade of a specific need or answer to a need. It grows together with the
changing need and aims continually to sustain and survive for existence. Trends also
meshes with other trends, some calls this as trend blending. This can be considered
as a strategy for a dying trend or less significant trend to continue existing, and in
some cases, making the new trend a progression of the previous ones.

AN EXAMPLE:

Over time, the need of the mode of transportation has existed. Emerging from the
need of vehicles for personal use in lieu of spending for buying private vehicles, taxi
cabs and rent a car, have been very much patronized. ( Duration of time and cultural
basis)

As a development to the mode of transportation, Uber is one of an excellent example.

An upgrade to the traditional call for taxi, through the use of mobile applications,
with the perks of having cashless transactions, availability and convenience of the
process, the professional experience of having a professional driver and a private
vehicle. To top it all, are the point system, incentives and discounts. (Need, Timely,
Acceptability, Transitory, Innovative and Evolving)
