V. ) Case No.: DC-2022-000824.00
)
RICE JONATHAN JAMES )
Defendant. )
ORDER
The above-styled matter came before the Court this date on an initial appearance and bond
hearing. The Defendant was present, pro se, and the State was present by and through
Assistant District Attorney, the Hon. Kristen Clemmons.
The Court informed the Defendant of the charges against him, informed him of his right to
be represented by counsel, including the fact that if he was found to be indigent, counsel
would be appointed for him, and informed the Defendant of his right to have a preliminary
hearing.
The Court then proceeded with a bond hearing where the Court received sworn testimony
from Investigator Christian Frasier and arguments from both parties. In the case at hand,
the Defendant is charged with trafficking fentanyl and alleged to have been in possession of
462.81 grams of fentanyl which is an amount that could cause the death of as many as
231,000 people. Moreover, if convicted, the Defendant would be facing a sentence up to Life
in prison as well as a minimum fine of $750,000. It is also alleged that defendant was in
possession of multiple firearms as well as drug paraphernalia that would suggest the
Defendant was engaged in the distribution of this controlled substance which, according to
Rule 7.2 of the Alabama Rules of Criminal Procedure would "indicate a substantial increase
in the amount of bond."
After careful consideration of the above-listed circumstances, as well as all other factors to
be considered as laid out in Rule 7.2 of the Alabama Rules of Criminal Procedure, it is
hereby ORDERED, ADJUDGED, and DECREED that the Defendant's bond in the above-styled
case shall be $1,500,000 - CASH ONLY.
It is FURTHER ORDERED that this matter shall be set for a preliminary hearing on the 24th
day of May 2022, at 9:00 a.m.
