Future Trends (B2)

Describing visual data and talking about future trends

EXERCISE 1: Look at the infographic. Which of these predictions to you

agree with? Which ones do you disagree with? Why?

EXERCISE 2: Now look at the table and the graph below and answer the
questions.

Think about the grammar you used to make predictions about the future.
What wording did you use?

When we want to make predictions about the future, we can use the modal
verbs could, might, may, and will. It’s no coincidence that will is both a
modal verb and the verb we use in the future simple. We then also use the
going to future tense to make predictions.

Think about predictions as happening on a scale of certainty:

unsure quite sure

could might/may will going to

What forms of the future tense would you use if you’re talking about
something that is no longer a prediction, but an absolute certainty?

Now look at the following example of another future tenses we can use:

Future continuous:

We’ll be driving electric cars before long. (will be …ing)

This form has two uses:

1. Talk about future events in progress (predictive)

—> This means that we use this tense to refer to something that has
already been predicted with fair certainty, or something which is
scheduled to start before a particular point in the future (e.g., I’ll be
meeting with a client when the package is delivered.)

2. Talk about the future as a matter of course (not predictive)

—> Like the passive voice, we use this form of the future to sound
more neutral. In other words, when we want to avoid expressions
of intention, prediction, or willingness (e.g., If you want a lift to the
airport, I’ll be going in that direction anyway.)

Answer the questions. Use the future continuous to respond.

Do you think we’ll be working remotely from here on out? Why / Why not?

Which changes are we all but certain to see happening in our societies over
the next twenty years?

EXERCISE 3: Look at the table and the chart on pg. 2 again. Read the
description of the data below, and find 6 factual errors. How would you fix
them?

How are the predictions in the description worded? Do you see any of the
future forms we discussed? What is used in the description to make
predictions?
