6.1.1 GENERAL PREPARATION

The concrete shall be clean and free of dust, dirt, oil, efflorescence and any other residual coatings.
For thin film coating (e.g. Sikagard-550 W Elastic), preparation is best done by light blastcleaning, steam cleaning,
low pressure cleaning (less than 18 MPa - 180 bars), grinding, etc.
Concrete surface profile shall fit to CSP 1, 2 or 3 as per ICRI 03732-7.

CSP 1 CSP 2 CSP 3

Method e e MS Sikagard 550 W Elastic (G)

Application of Sikagard® Protective Coatings
04/16, Ver.: 3
For optimum performance protective coatings shall be applied on pore/defect free concrete surfaces. If necessary
apply a levelling layer (e.g. Sikagard®-720 EpoCem®, Sikatop 121®- etc.) to smooth the surface and cover any
defects. Refer to relevant product data sheet or method statement for pore sealer and levelling mortar/coating
applications.

For cement based product such as SikaTop 121 compound allow a curing time of at least 7 days before coating, only
Sikagard®-720 EpoCem® allow a curing time of at least 1 day before coating (refer to product data sheet for more
information)...

6.1.2 PRIMER: COMBINED SYSTEM WITH HYDROPHOBIC IMPREGNATION PRIMER

a hydrophobic impregnation can be used as a primer underneath the coating to avoid localised flaking or peeling.
This will also prevent penetration of deleterious elements at areas of localized coating weaknesses.
Sikagard®-700 S a hydrophobic impregnation can also be used as a primer on the concrete substrate.
Refer to the hydrophobic impregnation method statement for more details in the application procedure

6.2 SURFACE PREPARATION

Sound, free of dust, oil, efflorescence and existing paint coatings. Cracks in concrete must be repaired prior to
application of the hydrophobic treatment. Use suitable product such as Sikatop 121, Sikagard 720 Epocem or

7.4.2 FILLED COATING
Before application, it is advisable to further mix the full pail to prevent any potential decanting of the pigment or
any other ingredient.
For large scale applications, filled protective coating such as Sikagard-Putty can be applied with electric screw
pump.
Typical setting of the pump machine is subject to local testing and experience,
however as a guide:
Pressure: 7 to 10 bars
Nozzle: Round nozzle 4.5mm
or
Slotted hole nozzle
Rotor and stator: Fitted for thick coating
Air compressor outflow: 200 – 500 lt/mn
Hose diameter: ½ “or ¾” inner diameter
For small scale applications, filled protective coatings can be applied with professional brush.
Tip: When the filled coating is used as pore sealer, the product can also be applied using
flat trowel.

RESULTS:

Consumption: First coat of Sikagard 700 S at 100 g/m2 followed by 3 coats of Sikagard 550 W
(350 g/m2 per coat)

1- Determination of water-vapour transmission properties, UNE-EN ISO 7783:2012

- Three cylindrical test specimens have been prepared, approximate surface=0,0079 m2 (100
mm diameter), to test with support or substrate.
- After curing for 28 days in laboratory conditions, the test specimens undergo 3 cycles of
immersion in water and drying.
- Site ambient conditions: 23ºC and 50% R.H.
- Saturated dissolving in capsules: dihydrogen ammonium phosphate (93%RH).
- Pressure difference (Δp)= 1210 Pa.
To create an atmosphere of 93% R.H. inside the capsule, a saturated dissolving with
dihydrogen ammonium phosphate is used, whereby a 50% humidity shall be attained outside
the capsule and 93% inside, thereby reducing the mass of the sample-capsule set.
Final results:
