Pre-K/Kindergarten THE CAT IN THE HAT Lesson Plan

1. Pre-K/CCSD K-2nd Grade Core Standard


• Educational Standards: Pre-K
• 1.PK.1 Identify words that rhyme.
• 5.PK.2b Trace and progress to copying basic shapes (e.g., horizontal line, vertical line,
X, plus sign, circle, etc.).

2. Objectives (What will children expect to learn?)


• Students will be able to classify -at rhyming words after -at rhyming activity and class
discussion with 80% accuracy.
• Students will be able to perform tracing -at rhyming words with 85% accuracy.

3. Materials and Equipment needed:


• The Cat in The Hat book, pencils, white plates, googly eyes, (black paper for whiskers,
ears, and nose pre-cut) (white and red paper pre-cut by teacher with traceable -at
words), white construction paper or cardstock hat pre-cut, black crayons, glue, stapler

4. Teaching (What will you do?)


• a. Introduce: Present “The Cat in The Hat” book and have a brief discussion on rhyming
words
b. Read: Teacher reads the book to class
c. Discuss: As you read, point out the rhyming words
d. Activity:
o Student will sit at table/desks and will be given all the appropriate materials
listed for the activity
o The teacher will demonstrate to students what to do step by step
o Students will first trace all the -at rhyming words on the white and red paper
strips (Bat, mat, cat, hat, sat, fat, rat, pat) Teacher observes and offers guidance
as needed
o When every student is done with that step, the teacher will demonstrate to the
students how to glue on ears, nose, googly eyes, and whiskers and draw on fur
around the plate. Teacher observes and offers guidance as needed
o Along with the teacher, students will glue the white and red -at rhyming word
strips to the hat
o Teacher will staple the hat to the cat plate.
o Students engage in a group discussion with teacher chanting, singing, repeating
the -at rhyming words (make it fun)

5. Closure:
• The teacher reviews each Cat in the Hat craft to check the accuracy of the students’
tracing -at rhyming words. The teacher has a group discussion to review and check the
accuracy and understanding of the -at rhyming words, bat, mat, cat, hat, sat, fat, rat,
pat.

I did this lesson plan with my 6-year-old at home. I tailored it to his age. We took turns reading
the book. Then for the activity, instead of tracing the -at rhyming words, I told him the words to
