Question No 1. Consider the following thermodynamic systems: [CLO1]

i) Pressure cooker
ii) A rubber balloon filled with air
iii) Hot tea in a cup
iv) The Universe
v) A beaker filled with water
vi) Ocean
vii) Hot water in a teapot
Differentiate the above-mentioned systems as Isolated system, Closed system or Open system. Give an
appropriate reason for your answer.

Solution:
i) Pressure cooker is an example of closed system because no mass can leave while it is
locked. Heat can be enter through stove and can leave from the top of cooker.
ii) A rubber balloon filled with air is an example of closed system. Because no air can
leave until we do hole in it. Heat can be enterd and can leave.
iii) Hot tea in a cup is an example of closed system.
iv) Universe is closed system because there is no lose of matter and is energy changing
from one form to another in the system.
v) A beaker filled with water is an example of open system.
vi) Ocean is open system.

Question No 2. Solve the following problems. Please give reasons for your solution where
needed. [CLO 2]
1. A circular hole in an aluminium plate is 2.725 cm in diameter at 12C. What is
its diameter when the temperature of the plate is raised to 140C. [2]
Solution:
T1=12C T2=140C
Δ Diameter = α * Diameteri * ΔT
= 23x10-6 / °C * 2.725cm * 128°C
= 0.0080224 cm
Diameterf = Diameteri + Δ Diameter
= 0.008 + 2.725
= 2.733 cm

2. A glass window is 200cm by 300 cm at 10°C. By how much has its area increased
when its temperature is 40°C? Assume that the glass is free to expand. [2]
Solution:
ΔA = A* 2 * α * ΔT
= 200 * 300 * 2 * 9x10-6 /°C * 30°C
= 32.4 cm2
Af = A + ΔA
= 32.4 + 60000
= 60032.4 cm2

3. Find out the energy transferred to or from a thermodynamic system which

undergoes a process. Consider that its internal energy decreases by 350 J. At that
moment some work of 180J has been done on it. [3]
Solution:
ΔEint = Q + W
ΔEint = -350 J
W = 180 J
Q = - 350 – 180 J => -530 J
