Experiment No:1.

Aim:-Determination of concentration/molarity of KMnO4 solution by titrating it against a standard

solution of ferrous ammonium sulphate(0.05m)

Molecular Equations:-

2KMnO4+3H2SO4 K2SO4+2MnSO4+3H2O+5(O)

(2FeSO4(NH4)2SO4 .6H2O +H2SO4+(O) Fe2(SO4)3 +2(NH4)2SO4 +13H2O)X5

2KMnO4+8H2SO4 +10FeSO4(NH4)2SO4.6H2O
K2SO4+2MnSO4+5Fe2(SO4)3+10(NH4)2SO4 +68H2O

Ionic Equations:-

MnO4- +8H+ + 5e- Mn+2+4H2O

( Fe+2 Fe+3+e-)x5

MnO4-+8H+ + 5Fe+2 5Fe+3+Mn+2+4H2O

Indicator:-KMnO4 is a self indicator.

End Point:-Colourless to pale permanent pink colour.

Procedure:-

Weigh 4.9g of Mohr’s salt ,transfer it in to 250ml standard flask, add water and make up to 250 level.

Rinse this solution with pipette and take 20ml of this solution in to a titration flask ,add 20ml of
dilute H2SO4 .Rinse the burette with the given KMnO4 solution and fill it in the burette. Noted the
initial reading on the burette. Transfer the burette solution in to the Mohr’s salt slowly with constant
stirring ,until a pale permanent pink colour appears. Repeat the expt to get concordant values.

Results:-

 Molarity of the given KMnO4 solution= ………….M

 Strength of the given KMnO4 solution= molarity x molar mass
 = …………x 158= ……..g/l.
2

Calculations:-

Weight of mohrs salt taken=4.9g

Volume of Mohrs salt solution prepared=250ml

Molarity of mohrs salt solution =0.05M Mohrs salt X KMnO4

S.No Vol.Of Volume Of KMnO4

Mohrs salt used.
Burette Readings
taken.
Initial Reading Final Reading.

1. ………..ml

2. ………….ml

3. ………..ml

End point : Pale permanent Pink colour.

From the overall balanced equations, it is clear that 2moles of KMnO4 reacts with 10moles of Mohrs
salt.( 2:10 ratio)

( MKMnO4 X V KMnO4) / ( M Mohrs salt X V Mohrs salt)=2/10

By substituting the values ,we get molarity of KMnO4 = ……………M

Strength of KMnO4 = Molarity x Molar mass = …………. X 158= ……..g/L.

Experiment No;2.

Aim:-Determine the molarity and strength of the given KMnO4 solution using a standard solution of
Oxalic acid (M/40Oxalic acid)

Molecular Equations:-

2KMnO4 + 3H2SO4 K2SO4+2MnSO4+ 3H2O+5(O)

(H2C2O4+ 2H2SO4+ (O) ( 60-70) 2CO2+3H2O)X 5

2KMnO4+ 2H2SO4+5 C2H2O4.2H2O K2SO4+2MnSO4 +18H2O+10CO2

Ionic Equations:-

( MnO4- +8H+ +5e- Mn+2+4H2O )x 2

(C2O4-2 2CO2 + 2e-)X5

2MnO4- + 16H++ 5C2O4-2 2Mn+2+8H2O + 10CO2

Indicator:-KMnO4 is a self indicator.

End point:-Colourless to pale permanent pink colour.

Procedure:-

Weigh about one gram of oxalic acid and dissolve in 250ml of standard flask and make up to 250ml.

Pipetted out 20 ml of oxalic acid in to a titration flask ,add20ml of dilute H2SO4 and heated to 60-70
degree . Fill the burette with the given KMnO4 solution ,after rinsing it .Add KMnO4 solution from
the burette until the solution in the flask get a pale permanent pink colour. Repeat the expt to get
concordant values.

Results:-

Molarity of the given KMnO4 solution= …….M

Strength of the given KMnO4 solution= molarity X molar mass

; ……………x 158= ………..g/L

4

Calculations:-

Mass of oxalic acid taken=1g

Volume of oxalic acid prepared =250ml

So the molarity of oxalic acid =M/40. Oxalic Acid X KMnO4

S.No Vol.Of Volume Of KMnO4

Oxalic acid used.
Burette Readings
taken.
Initial Reading Final Reading.

1. ………..ml

2. ………….ml

3. ………..ml

End point : Pale permanent Pink colour.

From the balanced chemical equation ,it is clear that 2moles of KMnO4 reacts with 5 moles of Oxalic
acid.( 2;5 ratio)

( M KMnO4 X VKMnO4) /(MOxalic Acid X V Oxalic Acid)=2/5

By substitution we get molarity of KMnO4 =………………M

Strength of KMnO4 = molarity X molar mass

……………..x 158= …………………g/L
