Contemporary arts are the artworks of today’s time or the current time. Artworks are
produced by the artist living in the 21 st century. Artist are free to express themselves
and their perspective on a certain topic thru different artworks such as painting,
digital medium and many more.
Art pieces of today’s time is diverse and has a dynamic combination of
materials, method, concepts and subjects. It also reflects the issues that is relevant to
ourselves and the world around us. Aside from that, it also mirrors and gives us the
glimpse of our culture and society we are in. That is how I defined and understand
what contemporary arts is.

Question:
2. Is Contemporary Art relevant to this modern-day generation?
Explanation:
Yes, contemporary art is relevant in this modern days’ time because it is used to
express and be vocal upon one’s self. Arts is one way to show what you’re feeling and
reveal your talent and skills upon a certain field of art. Art expresses and reflects one’s
society and cultural heritage. As well as the artist emotions. We get to see glimpses of
the story behind it was we appreciate and took a long look at it. It is significant
because it enlivens one people life. Other than that, the elements of an artist work can
create a dialogue or narrative of their views. Once the viewer engages with the piece,
they engage with the artist’s dialogue or story. And that are some of the relevance or
significance of contemporary arts in this modern-day generation.

Activity 2
Directions: Name three Filipino folk dances in Region III and discuss how they
are originated. Do this in your activity notebook.
1. Abaruray
“Abaruray” is a contraction of the words “Aba” and “Ruray”. “Aba!” is an
exclamation which is equivalent to “Hey!”, “Hi!” or “Hai!” in English. “Ruray” is
a nickname for Aurora. This dance is known in the Philippines be several
names, such as “Hapayan”, “Taagayan”, “Pandango sa Basp” and “Abaroray”. It
is a wine offering folk dance thus it is costumary for them to offer wine to the
visitors. The offering was usually made by a young lady. The girl dances with
the glass of wine on her head from which the young man drinks.

2. Bulaklakan (Bulacan)
The name Bulaklakan originates from the numerous flowers that grow in
the area of Bulacan. The dance is dedicated to the Virgin Mary performed
widely in the month of May as part of the celebration of their holy week.
“Bulaklakan” refers to green orchids and other flowering plants.

3. Basulto
Basulto is a satirical love song either an accompanying dance. It
originated in Victoria, Tarlac and Pampanga. It also has Pampango influence.
The singing verses and the dancing of figures are done alternatively.

Activity 3
Directions: Recall stage plays in school or elsewhere that you have watched
and give some highlights about it. You may use the guide questions listed
below.do this in your activity notebook.

1. What is the story all about?

The theatre play that I last watch was about a typical conflict that there
is in a family. The paly was entitled “Ang Huling Katotohanan”. It was a mini
skit that tells the different characteristics of a family. Their secrets have
unfolded one faithful evening. A father who is an adulterer, an older brother
who got his girlfriend knockout and a baby bake on her oven, a typical older
sister who has to sacrifice her studies just to support her own family, a
younger sister whose adventurous and wild, perfect younger brother to whom
Carlo was jealous about and the youngest brother being a closet gay. And it all
ends with the biggest secret of all, that the mother hides until that painful day
that Carlo was an illegitimate child. At the end, the mother had a heart attack
due to her husband telling Carlo the biggest and juiciest secret of all.

2. Name or point a part in the story you like the most and why?
What I like the most is when the mother of the family stood in the midst
of them to stop the commotion from happening. She was a mother who loves
her children the most. And she is fair, wanting the best for her child that when
the nonstop bantering and commotion is starting, she tries to pacify the
quarrel. Not wanting her sons and daughter to have a bad blood (tampuhan
and samaan ng loob) against their own brother and sisters.
Why? Because it reminds me of my mother whenever me and my brother
are against each other, she intervenes and made us make up to each other.
That at the end of the day everything will all be well.

3. Who among the characters in the play do you like most and why?
Vilma, the older sister who is responsible and caring for her brothers and
sisters. What I like the most about her is that she sacrifices everything for her
family. That she loves them the most.
Another character that I like is the mother who loves all her child
equally. She love them wholeheartedly and the same, no less and no more for
the other.

Written Report:
What I did is a mixed media art. Mixed media because I used paper and egg shell to
cover the spaces that was empty. It was a picture/illustration of a minion that I cover with small
pieces of colored paper. I pasted the original yellow color of a minion so that others will know
which character I used in making a paper mosaic once they saw my artwork. It takes me more
than an hour to make this piece. At first, I have the paper cut into a large piece that I need to
recut using my scissors. I had a hard time gluing the pieces together because the glue sticks right
afterwards.
Aside from the papers, I also used small pieces of egg shell to cover the glass part of the
illustration. And a colorful cutout pieces of paper for the body part. Unfortunately, I don’t have a
black construction paper so I use different colors of paper to cover the shoes.
