Guide Questions:

1. What is Climate? Climate is the average weather in a given area over a longer period of time. Climate
change is any systematic change in the long-term statistics of climate variables such as temperature,
precipitation, pressure, or wind sustained over several decades or longer.
2. What is Weather? Weather, state of the atmosphere at a particular place during a short period of
time. It involves such atmospheric phenomena as temperature, humidity, precipitation (type and
amount), air pressure, wind, and cloud cover.
3. The difference between climate and weather is that, Climate is the weather patterns of a place over
a long period of time while weather is the condition of the atmosphere over a short period of time.

LESSON 2:
ACTIVITY 1:
Answer the following:
1. How much is the tilt of the earth’s axis? 23.50 (66.50 , 23.50 ).
2. Which part of the earth receives most of the sun’s rays?  The equator
3. Why does the amount of heat receive by places far from the equator become less?  Latitude is the
measurement of the distance of a location on the Earth from the equator. The further away from the
equator that a location resides, the less sunlight that this location receives. Because the Earth is round,
only the front most portion receives direct sunlight.

W2 Q3 | SCIENCE
4. Why are the coldest places on earth found near the poles?  Polar regions do not receive direct
sunlight during the winter months due to the tilt in the Earth's axis
5. Why are places with high temperature found at the equator? Places found in the equator has high
temperature because they receive a direct hit angle of sun rays.
6. How does latitude affect climate? Latitude affects the temperature of a place. The places situated at
higher altitudes which are far from equator receive less sunlight and places which are located towards
the equator which is a 00 latitude receives more sunlight and are hotter than the places located at
higher latitudes

ACTIVITY 2:
Answer the following questions:
1. What is ocean current? An ocean current is a continuous, directed movement of sea water
generated by a number of forces acting upon the water, including wind, the Coriolis effect, breaking
waves, cabbeling, and temperature and salinity differences.
2. What are the different ocean currents that carry warm water? Give at least three
Examples: Gulf Stream; Agulhas Current; Kuroshio.
3. What are the different ocean currents that carry cold water? Give at least three
Examples: Benguela Current; Humboldt Current; California Current.
4. How does ocean current affects climate? When ocean currents that bring cold water move towards
a coastal region, the temperature of that area decreases as warmer air from the land flows to the sea
resulting in a cold climate. When warm ocean currents that take along warm water go to a land mass,
the temperature of that place increases as warmer air above the water flows inland, resulting in a
warm climate.

ACTIVITY 3:
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. What is altitude? Altitude refers to the height above sea level. Areas that are high elevations have
lower average temperature than areas at lowlands. The land part of the earth consists generally of
mountains and lowlands.
2. What are the 3 places having the lowest temperature?  Baguio, Bukidnon, Laoag
3. What 3 places having the highest altitude? Baguio, Bukidnon, Zamboanga
4. Why do you think that in your answer in number 2 have the lowest temperature? Because they are
located in a high altitude location.
5. What factor do you think is the cause of low temperature in the place? There are certain factors that
affects a certain area's temperature and of which is the location of that place. And the other is its
closeness to the equator. Basically, in a certain country, if your area is located in a high altitude place,
you experience low temperature (cold weather) and if your area is located in the lower grounds,
expect high temperature (warmer weather).

6. Based on the data, what is the relationship between altitude and temperature of a place? The main
relationship between altitude and temperature is that, when a place gets higher (higher altitude)
the temperature gets lower (colder). However, if a place is near the Earth's surface (lower altitude), the
temperature gets higher (hotter).

ACTIVITY 4:

Questions:
1. What does the graph tell you about the amount of rainfall in different places in the
Philippines? Changes in rainfall and other forms of precipitation will be one of the most critical factors
determining the overall impact of climate change
2. How do you think will the amount of rainfall affect the climate in these places? As temperatures rise
and the air becomes warmer, more moisture evaporates from land and water into the atmosphere.
More moisture in the air generally means we can expect more rain and snow (called precipitation) and
more heavy downpours.

ACTIVITY 5:

1.What do people living in hot countries wear? In hot countries people keep cold by wearing light
colored cloths
2. What do people living in very cold countries wear? On the other hand, black cloths and dark colored
clothes and house are preferred in the cold countries. Usually they layer a lot of clothing especially
thick ones.
3. Is the kind of climate also affects the kind of house they live in? How? Climate factors that can affect
house design are maximum temperature, minimum temperature, insolation, rainfall, snowfall, and
average wind speed. Shape:-In a cold climate with high heating loads, a compact shape makes the most
sense. The idea is to minimize the surface-to-volume ratio.
4. Where do most people choose to live? Why? In a place with a subtropical climate because a humid
subtropical climate is a zone of climate characterized by hot and humid summers, and cool to mild
winters. These climates normally lie on the southeast side of all continents, generally between
latitudes 25° and 40° and are located poleward from adjacent tropical climates.

PERFORMANCE TASK
Direction: Make a poem about weather. Follow the suggested steps below. Write on a separate sheet
of paper
Title: “My Weather Poem”

Sunny, windy, rainy, 'n stormy, the four types of weather

Hiking, swimming and eating is my favorite during summer

Weather is beautiful but also brings tragedy

Why can't it be peaceful instead of catastrophe
