Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is somtimes called the lost city of the Incas. Because of its location,
size, and elaborate construction, it is the most important archaeological site in South America.
The Incas built Machu Picchu around 1440. It has a large palace and temples around the
courtyard with other buildings. There are about 140 buildings in Machu Picchu. All these
buildings were made of large stones. The Incan builders were very clever in cutting the stones
and fitting them exactly together, so the buildings were made skillfully and still remain today.
The Incan rulers used the city as both a fortress and a mountain resort because the city was
completely safe from attack. Their priests also used it as an observatory of the stars. It is
calculated that only about 750 people lived in Machu Picchu at any time and probably a small
number of people lived in the town during the rainy season. After the Spanish conquered the
Incans in 1530, Machu Picchu was abandoned. It was not used or visited for many hundreds of
years. The city was located on top of the high Andes Mountains of Peru, which was remote and
very hard to get to, and that is why it was unknown by most of the world for so long. Hiram
Bingham, an American archaeologist, was the first foreigner to visit Machu Picchu in 1911.
These days the mysterious lost city inspires a lot of people to visit each year. Most visitors
walk the famous Incan Road System. Among the thousands of roads constructed by pre-
Columbian people in South America, the roads of the Incas were some of the most interesting.
The network of roads met at Cusco, the capital of the Incan Empire. One of them went to the city
of Machu Picchu. Although people must hike a very steep trail for 4 days up into the mountains,
the reason people want to hike this route is to see several other archaeological sites and many rare
plants and animals along the way.

G. " She had a broken leg and her owners were supposed to take her back to the vet within a
few months so that he could take her plaster cast off.
H. In Carole's eyes all her animals have their own personalities, and if they could speak, all
would have an alarming story to tell.
I . Carole lives with her "family"- some 500 sheep, goats, lambs, calves, pigs, and chickens-
amongst a jumble of old farm buildings.
Animal Rescue
Katie Smart visits a remarkable woman who dedicates her life to saving farm animals from
cruelty.

In 1990 Carole Webb set up a sanctuary to rescue abandoned or mistreated farm animals that
they've taken over her income, her life and her heart.
(0) ___I__ . The sanctuary is near Fen Drayton, in a remote area to the west of Cambridge.
Surrounded by acres of flat land, without so much as a tree insight, it seems cut off from the rest
of humanity. Carole's nearest neighbours are two miles away and she often goes days at a time
without speaking to another person. (1)___________. "When I was a little girl I always spent
more time with my pets and I could never bear to see any of them suffer."
"The animals that arrive here are frightened and in a state of shock", she explains "But they soon
change , with love and care. Animals that are often considered stupid show remarkable
intelligence once they've got over their fear." (2)_____________. She has a pony, which she kept
in a field, and she would often go to the nearby farm to watch the lambs. "Once day I noticed that
one of the

lambs had a broken leg. I told the farmer and asked him if he needed any help looking after sick
animals. Within a couple of years I'd bought this place and set up my own sanctuary."
(3) ________________. "When I found him he was cold, hungry and close to death," she recalls.
" I bottle - fed him, wrapped him up warmly next to the kitchen fire and nursed him back to
health." He is still alive and well, although he's getting a little bad tempered and prefers people
not to go near him."
(4)_____________. He's always on the hunt for cakes and biscuits and he won't leave you alone
until he's made sure you're not hiding one behind your back. It's hard to believe when you see the
size of him that he was found abandoned by the side of a road- cold, weak and hungry. Now he's
very much the boss in the sanctuary, and expects to be treated like a VIP, or "very important pig."
(5)_______________. Take the sheep who was destined for the butcher's, despite her advanced
state of pregnancy. Calore rescued her and three days later Gismo the lamb was born. Then
there's Gromit the Friesian cow who was left to die because the farmer couldn't pay his vet's bills,
or Petal the goat who suffered terribly for over a year.
(6)______________. But they didn't return until 15 months later. The poor animal was in agony."
" The vet refused to them take her home again. Instead, he gave her to me to take care of . It's
amazing she lets anyone go near her after the treatment she received, but she's very happy and
loves being with people." (7)______________. It costs Corela £600 a week for hay and animal
food, and the vet's bill can be as much as £1,000 a month." I remember crying to my friend on the
phone, thinking that we'd have to close down."" It was she who came up with the idea of staring
