Section A [45 marks]

Answer all questions in this section.

1. It is given that the mean and median for a set of 50 data are 35.5 and 34.17 respectively. On
checking one of the data, 37 was wrongly recorded as 40.
Base on the latest information,
(a) Find the mean and median of the data given, [4 marks]
(b) Sketch the frequency curve and state the shape of the distribution. [3 marks]

2. An IT survey is conducted for a sample of 500 people. The table below shows the
preference of males and females towards the three categories of IT gadgets.

Netbooks Tablets Notebooks

Male 80 150 50
Female 100 100 20

(a) Suppose a person is chosen at random. Events A, B and C are defined as follows:

A : The person prefers Netbooks.

B : The person prefers Notebooks
C : The person is a male.

Find
(i) P( A∨C) [2
marks]
(ii) P(B' ∩C ' ) [1 marks]
Determine whether A and C are independent. [2 marks]

(b) It is given that in the sample, 20% of Netbooks supporters, 30% of Tablets
supporters and 10% of Notebooks supporters are working in the IT industry.

(i) One person chosen from the sample at random is working in the IT
industry. What is the probability that this person is a Netbook supporter ?
[3 marks]
(ii) Three persons are chosen from the sample at random. Find the probability
that there is exactly one male who prefers Notebook or exactly one female
who prefers Netbook (or both).
[3 marks]

3. The probability density function of a continuous random variable X is given by

{
2
f ( x )= ¿ 3 x ( 2−kx ) , 0 ≤ x<1
¿ 0 , otherwise
(a) Find the value of the constant k. [3 marks]

(b) Show that P X ≤ ( 1

)3
= .
2 16
[3 marks]

2
(c) Calculate the mean of X. [3 marks]
4. For a given set of data for X and Y, it as found that the regression line of X on Y is
−1
y= x +5.6 and the Pearson correlation coefficient r between X and Y is given by
7
25
. It is also known that ( x , y ) =( 3 ,2 ) . Find the regression line of Y on X.
36
[5 marks]

5. The table below shows the quarterly sales of a company from 2011 to 2013.

Year Quarter Sales

1 40

2011 2 60

3 90

4 70

1 55

2012 2 75

3 115

4 80

1 70

2013 2 85

3 100

4 90

(a) Calculate the 4-quarter moving average for the time series given.
[3 marks]

(b) Plot the original data and the values of the 4-quarter moving average on the same
graph. [3 marks]

6. The price per unit (RM) and the quantities sold for four types of furniture in a shop for the
year 2010 and 2011 are as shown in the table below.

Type of 2010 2011

furniture Price per unit Price per unit

Quantities Sold Quantities Sold
(RM) (RM)
A 910 x 890 30
B 690 51 660 21
C 890 40 860 51
D 810 18 790 51

The average relative quantity index base on the year 2010 is 150.5.
Show that x = 20. [2 marks]

Hence, taking the year 2010 as the base year,

(a) calculate Laspeyres and Paasche quantity indices for the year 2011. [4 marks]
(b) Comment on the results obtained in (a). [1 marks]

4
Section B [15 marks]

Answer any one question in this section.

7. A study comparing the amount of teaching time by a private tutor to a particular student
for a month and the result obtained by the student for the test administrated at the end of
the month was conducted. The results over eight months are given below:

Teaching time
6 8 10 12 15 16 21 22
(hours), x
Result
50.0 57.2 k 62.3 66 68.5 76.0 78.6
(percentage), y

(a) Find the coordinates of the point through which the regression line y on x and that
of x on y both pass. Give your answer in term of k.
[3 marks]
(b) Given that the regression line of y on x is y = 1.6096x + 42.8058, find k. Hence find
the Pearson correlation coefficient r between teaching time and results obtained per
month. [6 marks]

(c) State with a reason, the effect on r if the teaching time was in minutes instead of
hours. [2 marks]

(d) Give two reasons why it is reasonable to use the regression line of y on x to estimate
the value of x when y = 73.1. [2 marks]

(e) It was found out that the results, in percentage, obtained by the student were
calculated wrongly due to a conversion error from the raw result to the percentage
form. The actual results are 15 % more than the calculated values in the table. Will
this affect the Pearson correlation coefficient ? Explain your answer.
[2 marks]

8. A shop which opens three weeks a month recorded the following sales of a particular
model of air conditioner in the month of October.

Week 1 2 3
Monday 32 34 36
Tuesday 56 62 68
Wednesday 46 49 45
Thursday 65 85 82
Friday 67 69 71

(a) Calculate the seasonal indices for each day using the multiplicative model.
[4 marks]
(b) Obtain a deseasonalised time series. [2 marks]

(c) Find the equation of the trend line to the deseasonalised time series using the
method of least squares. [6 marks]

(d) Forecast the sales of a particular model of air conditioner for Tuesday and
Wednesday for the first week of November. [3 marks]
