FIRST SIT COURSE WORK BRIEF
La Muela II, (Spain) is the biggest pumped hydroelectric storage power plant in Continental
Europe. The altitude difference between the lower and upper reservoir is 524 m. Water flows
between the two reservoirs via the underground power station, through an 840 m-long, 5.45 m-
diameter and 45°- inclined penstock, and a conduction tunnel structure. Figure 1 shows the
photographic image of the location of the Cortes-La Mulea hydropower complex in Spain.

You have been asked to design the bearing to support the weight and pressure of a butterfly
valve (Figure 2) to be installed at the bottom of La Muela II – Cortes pumped hydroelectric
storage plant.
There is a trade-off with the size of the bearing, the size should be big enough to last 25 years
and small enough to reduce the frictional power losses.
This is an open assignment, so the result and viability of the bearings is not known.

ASSIGNMENT OBJECTIVES:
➢ To design the bearings to support the weight and pressure of a butterfly valve to be installed
at the bottom of La Muela II – Cortes pumped hydroelectric storage plant that minimises
friction, wear and maintenance.
➢ To construct a reliability block diagram (RBD) for the butterfly valves and perform failure
mode effects analysis (FMEA) for the butterfly valves.
➢ To propose a monitoring system (sensory- actuation system) that can be used to monitor
system operational condition and prevent system/ sub-systems failure.
ASSIGNMENT BRIEF:
You have been asked to provide a short description of the power plant and design the bearing
to support the weight and pressure of a butterfly valve (Figure 2) to be installed at the bottom
of La Muela II – Cortes pumped hydroelectric storage plant. You also need to think of a
mechatronics, control system and reliability of the entire system. Slow operation of the bearing
is generally used to prevent the effect of water hammering. Sensors are used to monitor the
pressure and flow rate of the system. Flow rate takes place in both directions, for pumping and
energy production. The internal diameter of the pipe is mentioned as 5.45 m and water height
pressure is given as 524 m head. The butterfly valve opens and closes every day two times for
100 years. The main pipe is divided into several pipes just before entering the turbine room.
Provide a detailed, professional report that contains the following items mentioned below:
1. Selection of the bearing to support the weight and pressure of a butterfly valve (Figure 2)
to be installed at the bottom of La Muela II – Cortes pumped hydroelectric storage plant.
Define the design parameters and state any required assumptions.
Hint1: The internal diameter of the pipe is mentioned as 5.45 m and water height
pressure is given as 524 m head. The butterfly valve opens and closes every day two
times for 100 years.
2. Selection of the suitable bearing for the butterfly valve. You will need to justify your
selection. Selection of bearing (diameter/width), calculation of forces and pressure on the
bearing.
Hint2: The weight and pressure of a butterfly valve is not given and it need to be
estimated or assumed by you.
3. Look through different online resources to find the various failure mechanisms of the
butterfly valve used in the hydro powerplant. Construct a reliability block diagram (RBD)
for the various mechatronics system used in the hydro powerplant. List out all the
assumptions you have made in the construction of the RBD (e.g. failure criteria,
failure/repair interval, maintenance strategy, etc.)
Hint3: Websites mentioned below could be useful however you should also search for
more specific data and put your findings in a table with references cited.
http://reliabilityanalyticstoolkit.appspot.com/mechanical_reliability_data
http://www.barringer1.com/wdbase.htm.
4. Perform the Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) on the various mechatronics system
used in the hydro powerplant. Discuss and compare the salient features of similarities and
differences of the quantitative method like RBD over qualitative method like FMEA.
Hint4: Review the FMEA method and perform the FMEA analysis on the butterfly
valves.
5. Propose a monitoring system (sensory - actuation system) that can be used to:
- Monitor the operating condition of the butterfly valve
- Predict the failure transmission elements.
Describe in detail the main elements of the system. Use block diagrams to support your
discussion.
Hint5: You have to think about an actuator to prevent failure.
