Chapter I: Introduction
EFFECTS OF COVID-19 ON THE ACADEMIC 2

Background of the Study

The infectious disease of the COVID-19 pandemic affected all aspects of human life

including business, research, education, health, economy, sport, transportation, worship, social

interactions, politics, governance and entertainment (Orfan and Elmyar, 2020). To avoid the

spread of COVID-19, the world took certain measures. They closed all the educational

institutions, locked down the cities and banned people from traveling from a city to another city

(Orfan and Elmyar, 2020).

Since its outbreak in late December 2019, COVID-19 has wreaked havoc across the

world and like any critical sector, education has been hit hard. It is understandable that the spread

of COVID-19 caused school closures and lockdown around the world. Meng et al. (2020) argued

that almost all countries experienced changes in education. Since the spread of the COVID-19

pandemic, the universities have transformed teaching and learning and the lecturers have been

conducting online classes (Rahim and Chandran, 2021). Moreover, the instructors have also used

other platforms like, Zoom, Google Classroom, WhatsApp, and WebEx to deliver their lectures

(Danish, 2020).

Spreading from an infected person’s mouth or nose from sneezing, coughing, speaking,

laughing or even breathing. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a contagious

disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), causing

people panic and uncertainty for the future. It is an airborne disease that can quickly spread from

person to another person. The first suspected case in the Philippines was investigated on January

22, 2020, and 633 suspected cases were reported as of March 1. The continuous spreading of

Coronavirus resulted in the shutdown of educational institutions starting around March of 2020.

The pandemic has changed academic seriously: schools switched to online education,

face-to-face teaching shifted to online teaching where both teachers and students were allowed to

employ this platform, new assessments method has to be used, resulting in major changes in the

experience of students of their academic performance. The lack of interactions has had negative

impacts on students in the sense that they are less motivated to study because of environmental

changes that came with the switch to online learning. Students attitudes toward online learning is

a critical factor in the learning environment supported by online learning tools
