METHOD STATEMENT –
CONCRETING STAGES &
SEQUENCE

Project Manager:

Uditha Wijesena
REF: ENV/KMH/STP/MS-03

1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this Method Statement is to create awareness of common tasks involved in stages of
construction of the STP sludge tank and the concrete pouring of the construction stages and ensure the
execution is in full compliance with Project Specifications & Drawings complying with relevant EHS Standards
and norms. This Method Statement shall be communicated and be understood by all personnel associated
with the task before commencing the activity.
2. SCOPE OF WORKS
This document enumerates the planned activities and execution of concrete pouring in the STP sludge tanks. The
concrete pouring procedure shall be in accordance with this Method Statement. Supply, placing finishing and curing for
all applications in line with project requirements

This construction is planned for in three stages.

Stage 1 – Tank Base slab and the wall Kickers
Stage 2 – Tank walls
Stage 3 – Tank wall and top slab

4. EQUIPMENTS/ TOOLS / MANPOWER

4.1. Equipment’s / Tools
1. Concrete Pump Car
2. Transit Mixer trucks
3. Poker Vibrators
4. Slump cone test equipment
5. Test Cube Moulds
6. Trowels, Shovels, Wheelbarrows & Hand Tools

4.2. List of Manpower

1. Project Manager
2. Construction Manager
3. Site Engineer
4. Site Supervisors
5. Skilled and unskilled labourers

4.3. List of Materials

1) Grade 30 ready mix concrete will be used for the whole structure.
Note: Quantity of manpower and equipment’s shall be submitted on the daily report.

5. WORKING METHOD & PROCEDURE

5.1. Stage 2 – Part wall Concreting concreting
5.1.1 Number of truck mixtures & delivery

Total quantity of concrete for the pouring process (approximately) = 28.0 m3

The capacity of one truck mixture = 6.0 m3

Number of trips required = 28 / 6

= 6Trips

Time assumed for placement of one truck (6.0 m3) = 20 min

Numbers of truck mixtures per hour = 60 / 20 = 3 truck mixtures
Travel time for one truck mixer = 45 mins

Therefore, the number of Transit Mixer Trucks to have a continuous supply of concrete at the pouring area shall be
4.

5.2. Placing of concrete

For placing concrete a pump car will be provided. And the locations for the pump car is pre-planned and is shown in
the attached sketch.

5.3. Maintaining the finish level of concrete

The open edgw of the outer formwork will define the level of concrete in the peripheries and the wall level will also
be guided by water bar placed at the top of the wall.

5.4. Pouring sequence and layer thickness

Concret will be placed inside the wall shutter in three layers going all round the walls. The plant will be instructed to
supply two trucks at the same time so that extra waiting time will be reduced and the chances for cold joint formation
minimised.

5.5. Concrete consolidation

All concrete shall be thoroughly consolidated by suitable means during placement and shall be thoroughly worked
around reinforcement and embedded fixtures and into corners of forms. Concrete consolidation shall be executed
with vibrators without displacing the steel reinforcement and ensuring that all parts are filled and compacted until air
bubbles disappear on the surface grout. Pouring shall be continuous and fill the whole section, both vertically and
horizontally. Vibrators shall be inserted and removed slowly, to prevent the formation of voids inside the concrete..

5.6. Curing of concrete

Protect freshly placed concrete from premature drying and excessive cold or hot temperature and maintain a
relatively wet concrete in constant temperature for the period necessary for hydration of the cement and proper
hardening of the concrete. Start initial curing as soon as free moisture has disappeared from the concrete surface
after placing and furnishing of concrete. Water for curing shall be portable water that shall meet the requirements
specified. Proper water curing shall be achieved by covering the concrete with specified absorptive cover (such as
gunnies) and keeping the cover continuously wet. Moisture cover (plastic sheet) shall be overlaid on top of the
absorptive cover with 75mm overlap to retain moisture by reducing the evaporation in adverse temperatures and
windy conditions.

Water curing shall be continued until the compressive strength has reached 70 % of the specified strength, but will
not be less than 7 days after placement. Casting dates will be noted down and 7 days curing period will be assured
by construction supervisors and continuously monitored by the Engineers.

6 INSPECTION, TESTING & QUALITY CONTROL (QA / QC)

1) The Engineer shall be informed for inspection through an RFI raised 24 hrs in advance before executing the
concreting.
2) Concrete Slump and the Casting of Test Cubes will be done by the concrete supplier and relevant labelling and
curing will be undertaken by the contractor.

7 HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

All workers will be inducted on the importance of wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
during work following the safety procedures. All staff and labour will be required to adhere to the
social distancing and wear face masks as stipulated in the Health Guideline issued to construction
sites.
