Oxygen Sensors

Functionality & General Troubleshooting

Oxygen Sensors
 Oxygen sensor voltage –
ranges from 0 to 1
 Typically 0.45 =
Stoichiometric
 Neither rich nor lean
 Sensor must reach 600
degrees F to operate
properly
 Takes a minimum of 15
seconds to get up to
operating temperature.

Oxygen Sensors

 Heater element inside

an oxygen sensor.
 To get the sensor at
working temperature as
soon as possible, a
heater is often installed.
This will bring the
sensor on operating
temperature very
quickly.
Wide Band Oxygen Sensor

1. Cell with electrodes

2. Sensor heater
3. Outside air channel
4. Measuring cell
5. Diffusion channel
6. Electrode (positive)
7. Power source
8. Ceramic material
9. Electrode (negative)

Oxygen Sensor Adverse Conditions
 Poisoning – contamination of the internal portion of the sensor in
charge of the electro-chemical reaction of the O2 sensor
– Reduces the sensor’s ability to perform by binding with the specific
element inside the sensor
– Silicone is one of the most common causes
• Cummins does not recommend the use of silicone or silicone
based lubricants in any of the systems that are upstream of any
oxygen sensors
 Reference Chamber Suffocation – insufficient ambient air reaching
the reference chamber
– Grease, coolant, or other contamination
 Thermal Cracking – can occur when moisture/condensation comes in
contact with sensor
– Can cause crack that cannot be seen with the naked eye
– Rapid cooling cracks internal portion of the sensor

Oxygen Sensor Heating Element
 Heated Oxygen Sensor
– Heating element
operates on delay
• Turbine Intake
Temperature sensor
must meet minimum
threshold
• Entering closed loop
operation can take from
seconds up to minutes
– Moisture/dew present on
oxygen sensors can
damage internal
components

Oxygen Sensor Fault Code Examples
Fault Code Description
1861: Aftertreatment Intake Oxygen Sensor - CM2180 - Disagreement between the two
Data Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect oxygen sensors.
CM2380 - Slow transitioning signal in either
conditions, lean or rich
1862: Aftertreatment Outlet Oxygen Sensor CM2180 & CM2380- High voltage reading
Circuit - Voltage Above Normal or Shorted to detected on signal or return line for outlet sensor
High Source

1864: Aftertreatment Outlet Oxygen Sensor - CM2180 - Out of spec voltage coming from
Data Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect outlet sensor.
CM2380 - Slow transitioning signal from rich
condition to lean condition
3436: Aftertreatment Intake Oxygen Sensor - CM2180 & CM2380 - Sustained lean condition.
Data Valid But Above Normal Operating Range -
Moderately Severe Level

6396: Engine Exhaust O2 Sensor Closed Loop CM2180 - Sustained lean or rich condition.
Operation - Data Erratic, Intermittent, or CM2380 - This fault code is not used in
Incorrect* calibrations for the CM2380.
