PROSPECTUS
Alagappa University, established by the Government of Tamil Nadu under an Act of the State Legislature in 1985,
and located on a sprawling expanse of about 420 acres in the business town of Karaikudi in Sivagangai District in
Tamilnadu is ideally suited for higher education. The campus is accessible from Tiruchirappalli and Madurai in
about 2 hours by surface mode of transport.
This seat of Higher Education has emerged from the galaxy of institutions initially founded at Karaikudi by the
munificent and multifaceted personality, Padma Bhushan Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar and is groomed to
prominence as yet another academic constellation in Tamil Nadu. As a member of the Common Wealth
Universities and Association of Indian Universities, it has rewarding relations with other national and international
academic/ research/ industrial institutions that promise a spectacular future to the learners.
It has been recognised under Sec.2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act. The University has been awarded with A+ Grade
by NAAC (CGPA:3.64 out of 4) in the Third Cycle of assessment and also the first State University that obtained the
A+ status in the State of Tamilnadu. The University has been classified under Category-I status on account of its
NAAC score. Alagappa University has secured 27th position in the category of University under NIRF 2018 ranking
done by MHRD, New Delhi. The University has received many notable awards such as the ISO 9001:2015
Certification Award for providing quality Higher Education and Research Activities; Clean and Green Campus
Award (2016); World Environment and Livelihood (WEAL) Award (2017) from National Institute of Cleanliness and
Education Research (NICER), New Delhi. The University has secured Fourth Position at National level in Swachhta
Ranking 2018 of Higher Educational Institutions and for which the University has been identified as one of the
Centres on Swachh Bharat and Swasth Bharat by MHRD, New Delhi. Under QS 2019 Ranking, Alagappa University
is placed with 20th Place in QS India Ranking, 104th place in QS BRICS Ranking and 216 in QS ASIA Ranking.
The University has six UGC-SAP (Special Assistance Programme) and six DST-FIST (Facilities for improvement of
Science and Technology) supported Departments. During the past five years, the University generated Rs.44.87
crores from DST-PURSE, DST-FIST & UGC-SAP and Rs.20 crores from MHRD RUSA grant for creation and
upgradation of infrastructure facilities. Under RUSA – Phase 2.0 scheme, only 10 Universities in India, including
Alagappa University, have been sanctioned for Rs.100 Cr. each for two years. Out of which 30% is earmarked for
Capital expenditure and 70% for the quality improvement of Teaching and Research. 42 International MoUs were
signed with international Universities and Institutes for Academic, Research, Industrial, faculty and students
exchange programmes. The University has made a milestone through 4100 publications in SCOPUS with h-index
68 and the faculty members have filed more than 42 patents from their research work. The University has
implemented digitalization through Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) facilities in the Central Library and
Automation of Examination process. Alagappa University is adopting the Cashless transaction and Paperless
communication in all administrative and academic endeavors apart from creating awareness to the public about
Digital India.

Schools of Learning: The University has 4 Faculties, 11 Schools of Learning consisting 39 Departments, 3
Constituent Colleges and 9 Directorates / Centres of Development and Studies has been offering over 160
Programs at UG/ PG/ PG Diploma/ Diploma/ Certificate/ M.Phil/ Ph.D levels. Besides, the University is offering 66
programs through the Distance Education mode and another 100 skill-oriented programs through Collaborative
mode. Further, 44 Arts and Science Colleges have been affiliated to the Alagappa University.
Infrastructure: The University is having good educational infrastructure with state-of-the-art Science laboratories
with modern advanced scientific equipment. All schools have computer labs with internet/wi-fi connectivity.
There are Central and Faculty libraries with on-line surfing facility, besides latest volumes of books and journals;
three modern Auditoria capable of accommodating for international level colloquiums and conferences; 5 large
playgrounds and many small ones, enough even to host inter-university, state and national level sport events.
ICT Orientation: The students must be savoir-faire in utilizing ICT resource. Every program has minimum 2 courses
on computer education. There are also programs like M.Sc. Computer Science/M.C.A, M.Sc. (Bio-informatics),
MBA (International Business), MBA (Systems–Optional), and so on with more ICT thrusts.
Human Resources: 319 Faculty Members (Regular/Adjunct) with rich Teaching & Research Skills, and Project &
Consultancy acumen take care of academic/research works. The faculty members are very strong in publications
in national and international referred journals, securing projects from government and business institutions,
organizing national and international conferences and in collaborating with Indian and overseas research
institutions.
Pedagogy: Well aware of the fact that the ‘trained mind’ outsmarts the ‘theoretical mind’ in every facet, skill
building in the learners is intertwined with imparting knowledge. Every program has Training component and/or
Project work, besides practical courses, language lab courses, computer lab courses, etc.
Extension Activities: The multi-skill-set development of the learners and also the development of the
neighbourhood community are important in any scheme of education. The University takes care of this, through
co-curricular courses. Innovative extension in the areas of education to Special children, Para sports, Skill
Development, NSS, YRC, RRC, Placement vistas, Coaching Centre for Competitive Exams, Village Placement
Programme, Village adoption and also empowerment of rural women enabling the rural society around to attain
newer horizon. There are over 40 Cells/Clubs/Centres that provide opportunities for students to learn and also
serve the society in many divergent ways.

educating students on Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural, Environmental and National Values while they learn their
academic / research curricula.

Ranking, SWAYAM Programme, NAD, GeM, VISAKA, RUSA, Digital Launching of Enterpreneruship.
Fee Waiver/Stipend/Scholarship etc exclusively provided by Alagappa University: Alagappa University provides
(i) Complete fee waiver for deserving students in each programme, (ii) Merit stipend to top PG Students @
Rs.2000/month/student in the ratio of student strength on roll of 1:10 (under RUSA 2.0), (iii) PMT & VOC
Endowment Merit Scholarship for first 3 toppers in each year, (iv) Earn While You Learn Scheme for 2 students per
programme @ maximum of Rs 2000/month, (v) Besides, the students are facilitated to avail various

Admission Requirement: All selections are PROVISIONAL ONLY, until fulfillment of all
eligibility and other requirements.
On receipt of admission intimation, candidates willing to join the course should submit their prescribed
ORIGINAL certificates with an undertaking signed by their Parents/Guardians. They must remit the fees
either annually/semester-wise within the stipulated date, as prescribed by the University.
Selected candidates who do not report for joining and/or do not pay the required fees within the
prescribed period will forfeit their seats.
Selected candidates should submit the following Original Certificates to their respective Head of the
Department at the time of admission.

ANTI RAGGING
Ragging means causing physical and mental trauma to a person as a result of physical abuse,
manhandling, using abusive language or gestures or forcing to perform acts that may cause
physical/mental damage. Ragging is a punishable offence with imprisonment, penalty,
suspension/dismissal etc. Ragging is strictly prohibited inside as well as outside the University campus.
