Lesson 1 Domain and Range of Rational Function

INTRODUCTION
The domain of a rational function is all the values of x that will not make D(x) equal to
zero. And to find the range of rational function is by finding the domain of the inverse function.

Example:
1. To find the domain. To find the range.

Change f(x) to y.

Interchange x and y.

The domain of f(x) is the

set of all real numbers
except 3. The range of f(x) is the set
Equate denominator to 0. of all real numbers
except 0.

2. To find the domain. To find the range.

The domain of f(x) is the

set of all real numbers
except -2.

The range of f(x) is the set

Equate denominator to 0. of all real numbers
x– 1 = 0 except 1.
x=1

Lesson 2 Vertical and Horizontal Asymptote
Vertical Asymptotes of a Rational Function
They are the restrictions on the x-values of a reduced rational function. To find the restrictions, equate
the denominator to 0 and solve for x.

Horizontal Asymptotes of a Rational Function

Let n be the degree of the numerator and m be the degree of the denominator:
If n<m, y = 0
If n = m, y = a/b, where a is the leading coefficient of numerator and b is the leading coefficient of
denominator.
If n > m, then there is no horizontal asymptote.

Review on the degree of polynomial...

Degree of polynomial is the highest of the degrees of a polynomial.
Example:
Polynomial Degree Polynomial Degree
x 1 2x2 + x5 + 4 5
x2 + 2x + 3 2 8 0

Example: Find the Vertical and Horizontal Asymptote of the following Rational Function.

a. b.

Solution:
a. To find the vertical asymptote, equate the denominator to 0:
x–5=0
x=5 So, the vertical asymptote is x = 5.

To find the Horizontal Asymptote:

The degree of polynomial of the numerator is 0.
The degree of polynomial of the denominator is 1.

n < m, so the horizontal asymptote is y = 0.

b. To find the vertical asymptote, equate the denominator to 0:

x+2=0
x = -2 So, the vertical asymptote is x = -2.

To find the Horizontal Asymptote:

The degree of polynomial of the numerator is 1.
The degree of polynomial of the denominator is 1.

n = m, so the horizontal asymptote is

Lesson 3 Finding Zeros of Rational Function
The zeros of a function are the values of x when f(x) is equal to 0.

Steps in finding the Zeros of a rational Function:

1. Factor the numerator and denominator.
2. Find the restrictions. (Equate the denominator to 0.)
3. Identify the values of x that will make the numerator 0.
4. Identify the zeros of a function.

Example: Find the zeros of the following rational functions.

a. b.

Step 1: Step 1:

Step 2: Step 2:
x+1=0 x–3=0 x+1=0
x = -1 x=3 x = -1

Step 3: Step 3:
x = 0, and x-2=0 x+4=0 x+1=0
x=2 x = -4 x = -1

Step 4: Step 4:
x=0 x=2 x = -4
(Do not include -1, because it is restricted value)

Lesson 3 Intercepts of Rational Function

Intercepts are x or y-coordinates of the points at which a graph crosses the x-axis or y-axis, respectively.
Y – intercept is the y-coordinate of the point where the graph crosses the y-axis. To find the y-intercept,
substitute 0 for x and solve for y or f(x).
X - intercept is the x-coordinate of the point where the graph crosses the x-axis. To find the x – intercept,
substitute 0 for y and solve for x.

Example: find the x and y – intercept of the rational function

For y-intercept: For x-intercept:
