Statement of Purpose

“I keep forcing, I keep learning new things in the game, and so far I have been taking
challenges as they come”, quoted by Viswanathan Anand, is very relatable to my aspect of
life. The majority of the world is now increasing its reliance on Information Technology to find
better solutions and so does the technology, getting innovative to solve the modern
problems. I am always excited to learn various aspects of new technologies such as why the
previous approach had failed, what parts it missed to address and how the new one has
upgraded to meet the requirements and that is what I find most fascinating about Computer
Science. Through the Master’s Program in Computer Science at Concordia University, I want
to expand my knowledge by learning advanced topics and aspire to reach new heights in my
chosen field of work.

I still remember my 5th standard in primary school, when I had my first interaction with a
computer in which we were taught how computers were able to perform daily tasks on behalf
of us. Gradually every year my fundamentals about computers started getting clear and
during my 10th standard, I learned C Programming language and created a mini calculator
program as a part of the laboratory exercise which played the major part in setting my mind
to study Computer Science at first place. Along with this, I was also good at academic’s study
and mathematics was one of my favourite subjects. In 12th standard, I scored 96.44 overall
percentile ranks which helped me to pursue my undergraduate studies in Information
Technology at A. D. Patel Institute of Technology (ADIT), which is the first technical institute
of India to be ISO 9001:2015 certified and having four departments accredited by NBA. At
ADIT, during my first semester, I had a subject named “Computer Programming and
Utilization”, in which the concepts of C Programming language were addressed in-depth and
along with that, the laboratory exercises helped me to develop the required skills to convert
any logic to a block of code. During my tenure of study, Mathematics subjects like “Advanced
Engineering Mathematics” and “Numerical and Statistical Methods for Computer
Engineering” helped me to improve my logical and lateral thinking skills, which in turn helped
me to implement the best approaches via which a piece of code can be optimized to perform
better. Moreover, my confidence was boosted when I was recognized by “Shri Dewang Mehta
IT Awards”, for securing the first rank amongst my batch for the 5th Semester. In the end, all
this helped me to finish my bachelor’s degree by staying the topper of my batch with 9.11
CGPA.

I believe that theoretical classroom concepts must be applied to real-world problems to

acquire practical knowledge. To bridge this gap, I have taken many projects out of which, my
first project was a simple website for an Industrial company that would allow its customers
to login and access certain information. Through this project, I came to know about the basic
concepts of web development such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP and database like
MySQL. This helped me to towards creating my dream project of a stock market game. In the
6th semester of my college, I took a challenge to create a stock market game for my college
technical festival “Spectrum 18” in which I took the role of creating a backend for the whole
application using MySQL and JSP and my fellow mates helped me by creating the beautiful UI
for the same. The game was so successful that it won the award of the most innovative event
during “Spectrum 18”. My next project came as a part of “Smart Gujarat for New India
Hackathon 2018” where many problem statements were posted by Government of Gujarat,
out of which we selected the one where it was expected from us to create an application
which can eliminate the duplication of beneficiaries of various welfare schemes. We were
successfully able to create this application within 48hrs of the coding time period and won
the 3rd Prize in Tribal department. As a part of the final year project, my team unanimously
decided to create a price comparison portal, where the price of a product across different
ecommerce websites will be shown at a single place so that the shopping experience of buyers
can be improved. We used cutting edge technologies like “NodeJS” and “MongoDB” which
were not part of our syllabus so that we can meet the latest industrial requirements.

As a student of IT Engineering, I have never kept me away from learning new programming
languages. Up till now, I have participated in various programming contests conducted by
various online platforms such as “hackerearth”, “hackerrank”, and “codechef” using
numerous programming languages namely “Java”, “C”, “C++”, and “Python”. These
experiences helped me to learn many programming concepts: “Dynamic Programming” and
“Memoization”, and during my final year I was the only student who was able to crack the
first round of “TCS Codevita 2018”, in which I secured 2070 rank out of 43000 participants all
over the world. Because of my talent, I was directly recruited by Tata Consultancy Services
(TCS) without conducting any formal interview rounds. I am currently working as a MEAN
stack developer at TCS, Pune. During these seven months, I have learned many practical
aspects of software engineering such as working in an agile environment, deciding which user
stories to take and not to take during each sprint, and at the end of each sprint having a
retrospective meeting to see what things can be improved in next sprint.

During my every project, I have been writing the code for storing and displaying user
interaction data, and have found that the amount of data is exponentially increasing with
each passing day and always wondered how it can be exploited to find hidden patterns. So, I
want to acquire the right kind of expertise which is needed to find meaningful insights and
make correct decisions to make advancements and stay ahead in the business. Browsing
through the information given on the website of your University, I found that it has the
accomplished faculty members, an extremely suitable environment and a wide range of
subjects in the area of Data mining and Business Intelligence. I feel that with the course of
Master of Applied Computer Science at Concordia University, I will gain the right knowledge
that can help me start my career as a Data Scientist.

The Canadian universities have always been experimenting for the exploration of my field of
interest. The Concordia University’s Master of Applied Computer Science Program will offer
me a platform to seek my educational quest under the guidance of highly qualified professors
and quality infrastructure. I referred the university website several times and came to know
about this above mentioned program and I also checked the admission requirements for the
same. The program will not only offer theoretical knowledge but will also help in developing
practical skills through which I can make a noticeable contribution to my field of interest.

In conclusion, I would like to say that the core of University education lies in the synergetic
relationship between the department and the students. I think that graduate study at your
University will help me to climb the obstacles to reach the top of the mountain and fulfil my
dreams. If I am given a chance to pursue a master's degree, I am confident that with my
academic background and hardworking skills, I would actively participate and make significant
contributions to the university. I eagerly wait for your generous act of accepting me into your
Institute with granting me admission in my desired course and would be thankful if given the
chance to pursue my graduate study with financial assistance at your prestigious university.

Thanking you,
