I. OBJECTIVES

1. To construct a half-wave rectified power supply using simulator.

2. To demonstrate the operation of a half wave rectifier circuit

3. Observe and analyze the input and output waveforms of HWR circuit.

II. INTRODUCTORY INFORMATION

Various DC and AC voltage/current sources serve the power requirement of a

wide variety of electronic devices. Since it is more efficient and economical to transmit
AC power, it is the one generally provided by the power utility companies. This
necessitates the need for rectification (changing) of AC into DC voltages and currents
whenever needed. In this experiment, we shall be concerned with electronic means of
achieving rectification.

For a half wave rectification, the anode is positive with respect to the cathode and
current will flow at the positive alternation. During the negative alternation, the anode
now is negative the cathode is positive, and there will be no current in the circuit. The
voltage drop across the resistance R is zero. The effective voltage across R will be only
the voltage supplied during the positive alteration, which is a varying voltage from 0V to
the peak voltage of the input signal.

III. EQUIPMENTS/COMPONENTS REQUIRED

Oscilloscope
Source of 60-Hz alternating current at approximately 20-V p-p (6.3-V
transformer, or signal generator)
Diode, 1N914 or any general-purpose silicon diode
Resistor, 1KΩ

IV. PROCEDURES
1. Connect the circuit shown in Fig. 5.1 .
2. Set the function generator to sinusoidal output with 20Vp-p.
3. Run the circuit. and observe the resulting output.
4. Separate the waveform by varying the vertical position on the settings of the
oscilloscope.
5. Draw the resulting output on Table 5.1. Be sure to observe the correct phase
relationship between the two waveforms.
6. Measure the waveform amplitude and record the results on Table 5.1 beside the
waveforms.
7. Reverse the diode on the circuit and observe the effect on the output waveforms.
8. Draw the result on Table 5.1.
