Guide for discussion/Activities
1. Write a two to three paragraph essay on each of the following topics. Present and discuss in class:
a. There will always be people, at all times, everywhere, with needs and problems beyond their own
capacity for solution.
-That's why we have a social workers where we can seek guidance and seek for help because they
can give and provide people on their lacking and because social worker is capable of helping, they know
what to do on the peoples who have problems they know how to handle those problems. And we
people who are in needs should go to a social worker or social welfare agencies because I am sure they
will help us because that's their job to help people who are in needs.
Those problems we can't handle on our own of course we need some help and advises we need guides
how to solve these problems and when we said problem it include our personal problems, individual
situations of stress, mental health problems and etc.
People maybe get stress over things but we have a social workers who can help us everytime we need
them because that's their expertise, helping people, we just need to be strong enough to handle it and
share it with them then problem solve it maybe takes time but its worth it.
b. If peoples basic needs are met, they will have no use of social services.
-For me even if you are poor or rich everyone needs social services because base in the first
question there are really times or everywhere that individual really needs help, yes, sometimes you do
not need social services but there are really times that you need help from them. And also even if you
have that needs but not enough there this social services we call together with the social workers who
can provide us our needs.
And also I believe regardless on your social status everyone really have this one big problems that they
cannot handle and needs that they cannot provide. It is our needs and problem we are talking about and
we need someone who can help us it's either through services that the government provided or
personal services, but there are some people who have needs but they don't seek help because of their
ego they are claiming that they can handle it but they are not.
2. Differentiate the following social welfare, social services, and social work. Provide illustrative
examples of it.
First social welfare is an organization who offers or give helps to the people especially in needs, and also
it offers help to improve the well-being of the people including the social, physical, mental, emotional,
economic and spiritual well-being. For example we need help regarding on our spiritual beings there we
have priests we can lean on and who can help us. Also base on what I read in the book social welfare
have a two views or conceptions which is the residual and institutional they have different definitions
but they both the same objective which is offers help to people.
Second is social services refers to the programs, services and activities provided under various auspices.
These programs and services helps people fulfil themselves, the social workers provide services that
help people improves their lives even by in differrent perspective as long as they can provides those
needs through social services. For examples there are parents who have difficulties to protect their
children from harm or for example they cannot provides their children's needs you can go to
DSWD(department of social welfare and development) they can offer you those services that can help
you with your problems.
Lastly is social work it is so important in our society it is an practice-based profession that help the
individuals, groups and communities to improve. Social workers really focused on helping people
especially for those people who are ignorant, poor, lack of skills and got abuse just because they don't
know anything about the certain things, in these situations the social workers fight for social justice for
their clients and by this, it is so much of help for those who got abuse. And also social worker also
promotes human right to the people who do not know about it. That's why social worker is really a big
help in our society.
3. Differentiate a "need" from a "problem". Think if the community where you live. What human needs
exist: what human problems are there? How do people meet their needs? How do they and/or society
respond to their problems?
For me the needs is where the people needs support of resources and goods like for example our
community got hit by a storm and the houses, businesses and personal things is gone either you are rich
or poor you have these "needs" that you need to get because you are a victim of a storm. And the
problems is when a people is suffering from personal difficulties it's either because of the community
where they live in and or the personal problems where they cannot handle anymore. In our community
since we are in a rural area the houses here is just a feet apart the people really help each other but
despite of those the people here in our community still have problems and the number one problem
here is river pollution, people here don't help each other in these problems and sometimes the people
get sick because of the dirty water and by that the needs we want is unity in regards of this certain
situations. But so far our community is improving in terms of this problems we are facing, I really hope
we can solve this so that our communities will have a better future.
4. Visit social welfare agency. What social services does it provide? Who are the users of these social
services? Is the agency a social work agency? Why or why not? Explain your answer
- so far I still don't have social welfare agency I visited but we have here a barangay hall in our
community they have these services that they can offer and for example the people just got abuse we
can go to barangay and the workers here offer or provide their services they can help the victim go to
the social welfare agencies like in DSWD. And base on my experience in our barangay last month I go
there to get vaccinated and that time I didn't bring my identification card so instead of going home again
they offer me a services where I can get an valid id for myself and so by that the services of the
barangay meets my needs and that is given that the needs of the individual here in our communities
meets their needs because they have so much to offer. And I think our barangay is likely much of a social
welfare
5. Of the three goals of social welfare, which one is the focus of the agency you visited? Justify your
answer.
- of the three goals of social welfare the agency I visited focus on is the "Individual and group efforts"
because in our barangay they really provide the needs and give services to the individuals and groups so
that they can meet their clients needs. And also sometimes people needs help but cannot pay for the
expenses they are still willing to help as long as you have a valid reason why you cannot pay for it. So
over all the agency I visited focus in "Individual and group efforts".
