LEARNING PROCESS
It is recommended that you follow the order of the various learning activities as listed here to
ensure optimal learning process. Nonetheless, you may modify according to your style of
learning.
Introduction
Nervous tissue is specialized for the rapid communication of information from a region of the
body to another.
Read the discussions and view the slides in “Chapter 6 – Nervous Tissue” in the virtual
histology lab set up by the Histology Guide. The said lesson is accessible through this link:

Assignment
Use the guide questions to summarize your learnings on concepts. Take note that you do
not need to pass anything for this assignment. Instead, you must answer the assignment
assessment questions which are based on these guide questions.
Guide Questions:
1. What is the structural and functional unit of the nervous system? Describe and
identify its structures.
2. Enumerate the different cells that provide support and protection in the CNS and in
the PNS? What is the general term for all these cells?
3. Differentiate Purkinje neurons from pyramidal neurons, particularly the structure of
their dendrites and axons and their location in the brain.
4. Identify and describe the structures of the spinal cord: gray matter, white matter,
central canal.
5. Identify and describe the motor neuron. Identify and describe its structures: nucleus,
nucleolus, Nissl (Chromophil) substance, axon dendrites.
6. Identify the dorsal root ganglion, sympathetic ganglion, and parasympathetic
ganglion. Differentiate their locations.
7. Identify and differentiate the three connective tissue structures that protects the
nerves: endoneurium, perineurium, and epineurium.
8. Identify and differentiate the nerve, the nerve fascicle, and the nerve fiber.
9. Identify and differentiate the Meissner’s corpuscles and the Pacinian (lamellar)
corpuscles.
Supplementary Activities
If you have extra time, you are encouraged to view other slides in the reference websites
and visit the other websites in the learning materials. This is not required for the course, but
they will help you expand your understanding of the topic.
Research
If you have additional time, you may search for other labelled images of histological slides to
practice the identification of the different structures of nervous tissue.
