Information and Communications Technology (ICT) refers to all technology that is used to
handle communication and access information. It uses different communication technologies such as
mobile phones, tablets, internet, etc. to locate, send, receive, and edit information.

ICT in the Philippines


Most of the international companies says that Philippines is the
“ICT Hub of Asia” because of the huge growth of ICT-related jobs
around the country, one of which is the Business Process
Outsourcing (BPO) centers or call centers that brings up a 19.3% of
the total employment population here in the Philippines.
On the latest Technology and Innovation Summit, The
Department of Information Communication and Technology (DICT)
Secretary Gregorio Honasan also said that there is a need to adopt
a strategically developmental and competitive approach in the
expansion of ICT in the country.

With the growing number of users of the internet, mobile phones, and social media in the
Philippines, it is important to utilize it productively. Part of their plan also is to provide a fast internet
service connection to 104,000 access points all over the country. The DICT envisions giving free Wi-
Fi services to about 25 million users in the country.
It is no doubt that the Philippines is one of the countries that benefits most of ICT.

Web 2.0: Dynamic Web Pages


When the World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee, most of the web
pages were that we see on the internet is static. Static (also known as flat page or
stationary page) in the sense that the page is “as is” or “what you see is what you get”
and cannot be edited by the user.
Web 2.0 (dynamic) is a term coined by Darcy DiNucci on January 1999. Dynamic
web pages are interactive and have user participation. It lets the users to be able to
see a website differently than others.

Trends in ICT
1. Convergence
It is the synergy of technological advancements to work on a similar goal. For example,
besides using your personal computer to create word document, you can now use your
Smartphone. It can also use cloud technology to sync files from one device to another which
means you can access your files anytime, anywhere.

2. Social Media
A website, application or online channel that
enables web users to create, discuss, modify and
exchange user-generated content.
There are six types of social media:
a. Social networks - allow you to connect with other
people with the same interests or background.
Examples: Facebook & Google+
b. Bookmarking sites - Allows you to store and manage links to various websites and
resources. Examples: Pinterest & StumbleUpon
c. Social News - Allows user to post their own news items or links to other new sources.
Examples: Reddit & Digg
d. Microbloggings - Sites that focus on short updates from the user. Examples: Twitter & Plurk
e. Media sharing - Allows you to upload and share media content likes images, music and
video. Examples: Instagram, YouTube & Flicker

3. Mobile technologies
The popularity of Smartphone's and tablets has taken a major rise. Several of these
devices are capable of using high-speed internet.

4. Assistive media
It is a nonprofit service designed to help people who have visual and reading
impairments.

- ICT plays an integral part in the development of the Philippine economy;
- Dynamic web page, introduced in Web 2.0, is a page where its contents depend on the
user or the website visitor;
- An online system is used to offer services that give the customers convenience,
directness and transparency;
