Service Learning and Community Service
Service Learning and Community Service
Service Learning and Community Service
Task 1:
Answer the following:
1. Define service learning and explain advantages to students, teachers, and communities.
Explain two advantages to each group.
Service Learning is a type of experiential education in which students collaborate with
others to apply what they've learned to community problems while also reflecting on their
experiences in order to achieve meaningful goals for the community and a deeper knowledge for
themselves. It is a versatile methodology that may be implemented in a range of classroom and
community contexts. In order to construct effective service-learning activities, students,
community partners, and instructors must all work together. Service learning is linked to course
content and organized around clear learning objectives; it provides meaningful service activities
that address specific needs.
Students who serve in exchange for knowledge benefit greatly in the long run. Learning
does not have to be just a result of service; it can also reflect on service and generate meaning
from it. Service learning can help young people mature by breaking them away from the natural
reliance and egocentrism of childhood and allows them to understand things comprehensively to
be a well-rounded individual that can develop into becoming a service-oriented citizens and
leaders.
Teachers function in various new roles as mentors and guides and presenters of
knowledge when students assume responsibility for their learning. Value-added partnerships can
be formed between teachers and students because service-learning methodologies call for a
system of evaluation based on actual performance. Staff collegiality is enhanced in an interactive
learning environment where staff members collaborate. Whereas, can be mutually beneficial
collaborations are developed among students and teachers in schools.
Community development and revitalization are facilitated by service learning. Direct aid,
human connection, and personal empowerment all help improve the well-being of service
recipients. Participating adolescents provide agencies with a considerable amount of both
innovation and excitement, whereas students can learn to be involved to the citizens of their
communities through service learning which makes them recognized as an important asset for
the community.
Task 2:
Create a plan for the community service you and your group have chosen. Identify a problem in
the community that you feel you could make a difference in solving if you could organize a
group of people to work on it. Who would be your beneficiaries? What would you need to do in
preparation for the activity? Who could be your teammates in the service? Could your school
implement the project? Prepare also the program for this activity.
1. What is mental health? Why does it matter to advocate and address mental health issues?
Our emotional, psychological, and social well-being is part of our overall mental health.
It has a significant impact on how we think, feel, and act. It explains how we deal with stress,
how we react to people, and in making decisions. Just as with physical health, mental health is
crucial throughout the lifespan, beginning in childhood and continuing into maturity. People of
various ages and backgrounds are affected by mental illness, and addressing the signs of a
problem can lead to a beneficial outcome. As mental illness goes untreated, symptoms develop
and a person's whole well-being is negatively impacted.
2. Ask someone to share a story, experience, or circumstance in his/ her life. It can be about
his/her family, studies, friends, or self. Afterwards, answer the following questions.
a) How do you feel about the story you just heard? What was your first reaction? How about
as the story unfolded?
Upon hearing the story of my friend whom I have a regular communication with, told me
that she gave birth. She was my friend and this kind of situation is something that I expect to
know first rather than the last. She said that she tried bringing the news to me while she was still
pregnant but because of her mental health issue which is anxiety and depression, it pushed her to
remain silent.
b) What were your thoughts regarding the signs and symptoms of this mental health issue? Have
you experienced any of these yourself or in someone you know?
In my opinion, the signs and symptoms of anxiety disorder and depression is observing
that someone is drifting away from you. Becoming distant to everyone including her friends
which is not normal. In my experience, this is what I've only observed because due to COVID-19
pandemic, I wasn't able to take note of her physical wellness and etc.
c) How would you react if you noticed these in someone you care about?
My initial reaction will be shocked because I hope and believe that all people are happy,
but I will be sad to know that they are experiencing this kind of mental health issue and I hope
that they will get professional health and to feel better soon.
d) How might taking action benefit you and the person you care about?
Taking a reasonable action will prevent many awful situations such as self-harm and
suicide. This will benefit me because I will not lose a friend and this will benefit them because
they will not lose their life.
e) What actions could you take to help someone who is exhibiting these signs and symptoms?
If I were to observe these kind of symptoms, I will first ask and then just listen. People
experiencing this mental health issue needs someone to listen regarding their struggles in life to
avoid other negative feeling such as shame and the feeling of being neglected. While listening I
have to be silent to understand and compose an advise that might help. I also need to make him or
her loved and to let them know that I am here for them and I will never let go.
f) What do you believe is important for anyone to be aware of if they know someone with
this mental health issue?
Being someone who is aware that someone has a mental health issue, it is
important to sensitive to your actions as this may either help or worsen the feeling of
someone. I also believe that it is important to exert extra effort to determine what ignites
their negative feeling so that you can prevent it from doing.
g) What experiences have you had that are related to this story? What was similar? What
differed?
The similar experience I had was when I suffered from anxiety. When COVID-19
pandemic hit, I feared that I may not be enrolled due to financial loss and I never talked
about it about anyone because I thought that people will judge me based on my financial
status. Hence, I applied for a job, enrolled in the university and conquered my insecurity.
3. With all the lessons you have learned from this modules and stories you have heard from your
interview, enumerate the methods and strategies that you have to prioritize in keeping your
mental health well and stable.

Module 3
GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT
Task 1
1. Discuss awareness campaign, activities, and implementation of programs/projects of
Gender and Development in your:
1.1. Community
Advocates are encouraged to continually spread awareness through social media
and motivate other people to join seminars that they have organized to impart and share
knowledge to the community.
1.2. School
The highest governing body of the school is recommended to conduct awareness
campaign through general assemblies of the institution to encourage the faculty,
instructors, students and etc. to join the organized seminar which is dedicated to inform
the said population.
1.3. At home
The head of the family is suggested to take charge in informing and motivating
the rest of the family to practice or implement the importance of gender and development
according to the community seminar or school seminar.
2. How important is institutionalizing Gender and Development?
The importance of institutionalizing Gender and Development is that it strives to explore
more fully the role of men and women in their ability to get and control resources, make
decisions, and obtain and profit from advantages and rewards within a specific system. Assisting
developing countries' self-help efforts in achieving global commitments to empower women and
promote gender equality is crucial. It is imperative that gender is taken into consideration while
dealing with developmental issues. One can view gender dynamics as stemming from how norms
and power structures affect various groups of men and women. In terms of poverty, women
outnumber males globally. Even though women are less likely to get basic education and are less
likely to be assigned to a political post both nationally and internationally, they also experience
discrimination. We can understand that because of the gender roles and societal restrictions that
men and women, boys and girls suffer, the impact poverty has on them varies greatly.
3. In the present era where GAD has been given spotlight, what do you think is still
lacking in the implementation or mainstreaming of GAD.
Despite the free access in the social media, insufficient public awareness regarding GAD
is still the problem. Many people may be familiar with the abbreviation but cannot comprehend
and analyse the meaning, importance and lessons it imparts to the future of the society. Therefore
it is recommended to continue advocating, conduct campaigns and seminars for the benefit of
everyone and the greater good of the civilization.
Task 2
Instructions: From the three focused areas of Gender and Development namely GAD and
Education, GAD and Environment, and GAD and Access to Justice, select one area, create or
come up with an artwork based on your own interpretation and representation. Provide a short
caption or narrative why you have come up with that artwork.
Note: Any medium is allowed. Just make sure to create an artwork that you can attach in this
module for submission purposes
Colors
The comet on the middle top of the canvass describes the impact of education or
knowledge that everyone can assess when they fully absorb the importance of Gender and
Development. While the backdrop palette of this watercolour canvass mirrors the vast and
unseen color of the environment which aims to be appreciated by the whole population in order
to avoid disparities. Then, the illustration of two people who held each other’s hand imparts the
overwhelming feeling which cannot be matched by any amount when access to justice is
achieved
Module 4
PROHIBITED DRUG PREVENTION AND DRUG EDUCATION
Task 1:
Answer the following:
1. Discuss the four commonly abused drugs and the effect to one’s body.
Depressants. Slowing or "depressing" the function of the central nervous system are common
side effects of central nervous system depressants. This decreases the speed at which messages
travel to and from your brain. Under the influence of tiny doses, depressants will decrease
inhibitions. They can cause vomiting, unconsciousness, and death in excessive concentrations.
Stimulants. People sometimes use the term “speed” to describe stimulants. In order to get this
euphoric feeling, the body's functions have to be sped up. Despite the intense feelings, this
feeling will only last a short time. The stimulant effects on the body have the potential to be
hazardous when used unresponsibly. The list of stimulants are:
Amphetamines. These are an example of stimulants that act on the central nervous system
(CNS). They are used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and
narcolepsy. Restlessness, acne, and blurred eyesight are just a few of the side effects.
Seizures, cardiac difficulties, and psychosis are among the more uncommon side effects.
Methylenedioxymethaphetamine (MDMA). After taking a single dose of MDMA, a
person may begin to feel the drug's intoxicating effects within 45 minutes or less. This
includes an improved sense of well-being, increased extroversion, increased emotional
warmth, empathy toward others, and a readiness to talk about emotionally charged
memories. Additionally, participants claim that the MDMA experience is characterized
by heightened sensory perception as a hallmark of the event.
Cocaine. When cocaine is used, it produces a short-lived, intense high that is immediately
followed by the opposite effect: great depression, irritability, and a strong desire to
consume more of the substance. People who use it frequently have trouble eating and
sleeping appropriately. A significant increase in heart rate, muscle spasms, and
convulsions can occur in some individuals. Even when the user is not under the influence
of the medication, persons can experience paranoia, anger, hostility, and anxiety. While
the long-term cocaine usage is when it becomes necessary to take increasing amounts of
the drug in order to get the same high level. Sleep deprivation and loss of appetite are
common side effects of long-term daily usage. A person can become psychotic and begin
to have hallucinations if they are exposed to certain stimuli.
Caffeine. It takes around between 5 and 30 minutes for caffeine to be absorbed by the
body, and the short-term benefits are typically felt between 5 and 30 minutes after taking
it. Then, increased respiration and heart rate, as well as an increase in mental alertness
and physical vigor, are all possible side effects. They can also last anywhere from 12
hours to 24 hours, depending on the individual.
Hallucinogens. Once the hallucinogens are inside your body it affects neuronal circuits in the
brain that use the neurotransmitter serotonin to influence the manner in which the hallucinogen
produces its perceptual effects. Most of the obvious and noted effects occur in the prefrontal
cortex of the brain—a region that affects cognition, perception, and emotion. A high from a
hallucinogen might endure between 6-12 hours. As you don't have to keep taking the substance
to replicate the high, this period could be referred to as a long time of freedom. For people who
have already had a horrible trip, the protracted duration of this high can be excruciating and
intolerable. You have to bear with it.
Narcotics. A narcotic's mechanism of action is to attach itself to pain receptors in your brain.
Pain receptors are cells in your body that receive chemical signals from your brain and contribute
to produce the experience of pain. When drugs bind to pain receptors, the substance has the
ability to reduce or eliminate the sensation of pain.
2. Describe the manifestations of drug dependency in terms of the following:
A. Physical
Drugs has a potential to affect nearly every organ in the human body. The
following are possible side consequences of drug addiction:
Cravings and withdrawal. Addicts progress from wanting drugs to needing them
in order to feel well, and if their demands are not met, they will experience
withdrawal symptoms within a few hours of taking their last dose of the substance
in question. Panic attacks, sleeplessness, a raised heart rate, shakiness or
weakness, headaches, nausea, muscle cramps, and intense worry or uneasiness are
just a few of the symptoms that can manifest themselves.
Changes in appearance. Extremely dry or bloodshot eyes, dilated pupils, teeth
decay, severe weight loss, pale complexion, hair loss, and the existence of sores
that refuse to heal are just a few of the visible indicators of drug addiction.
b. Psychological and Emotional
Drug addiction affects perception, has the potential to skew thinking, causes
emotional imbalances, and leaves patients with a lowered sense of self-esteem, among
other things. The psychological and emotional characteristics of drug addiction include:
Abrupt changes in mood. Because of the chemical imbalances that have
developed, drug users can suffer feelings of sadness, anxiety, irritability,
aggressiveness, and paranoia that appear to come out of nowhere at times.
Decrease in ability to enjoy formerly pleasurable activities. As a result of drug
dependency, it deplete emotional energy, leaving little opportunity for other forms
of pleasure or happiness.
c. Behavioural
It may be difficult to decipher the inner thoughts and sentiments of drug addicts,
but their outward behavior will reveal their drug reliance, as well as the desperation and
havoc it is causing in their personal and professional lives.
Lying and manipulative behavior. People who are entrapped by drug addiction
will routinely lie about their acts and whereabouts in order to maintain control.
They will also not hesitate to influence people in order to obtain what they desire
(which is more drugs). In the end, they say so many lies or half-truths that they
are bound to be exposed at some point in the future.
Blaming others for life problems. Unable to see through their own
rationalizations. When people who are hooked on drugs are unable to look past
their own rationalizations, they are more likely to blame others, poor luck, or a
variety of other factors for their problems. They become skilled in inventing
justifications to avoid taking responsibility and protecting themselves from being
exposed.
3. Explain why the youth must be educated on the matter of illegal drugs.
Drug education helps children, youth, and adults gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes
necessary to appreciate the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle of which may or may not include
the use of psychoactive substances), promote responsibility toward the use of drugs, and relate
these to their own actions and the actions of others, both now and in the future, as well as to their
own and others actions, both now and in the future. Moreover, it provides an opportunity for
people to reflect on their own and other people's attitudes toward a variety of psychoactive
substances, their consumption, and the people who consume them.
Task 2:
Instructions: Prepare a brochure to be used for awareness campaign on drug addiction and
prevention. This will be distributed to schools and barangays.
