Target

Information is available everywhere. You can gather information from the

internet or social media, or any available printed reading materials. However, you
should always evaluate the information you gathered whether they are based on facts
or just mere beliefs. You should become a good critical reader.

Having critical thinking skills helps you fully understand and decode
information presented in online and printed materials you are reading. These skills
lead you to become fully aware about a certain information, create your own logical
judgement, and express your own opinion and interpretation.

As you go through this module, you will be able to formulate your own opinion
based on the information presented, logically evaluate the writer’s purpose, message,
and claims in writing the text, and determine textual evidences to support your
claims.

The most essential learning competency covered in this module is to react to

what is asserted or expressed in a text, ENG8RC-IIIe-2.1.7.

Objectives:

As a learner of this module, you are expected to:

1. identify the different types of assertion;

2. infer from the given texts to formulate your own opinion;
3. differentiate facts, opinions, and assertions;
4. formulate assertion from the given texts
4. validate assertions through determining textual evidences

Lesson 1 Formulating Assertions

When you are making a statement and expressing a strong belief in it, though
it is without a proof, then, you are making an assertion.

What is an Assertion?
An assertion is a statement used to make a declaration or to express strong
belief on a particular topic, often without evidence.
It is a stylistic approach or technique involving a strong declaration, a forceful
or confident and positive statement regarding a belief or a fact. Often, it is without
any proof or any support. It is a sentence that is either true or false.
Its purpose is to express ideas or feelings directly.

Types of Assertion According to Degree of Certainty

1. Statement of Fact – It is a statement that can be proven objectively by direct

experience, testimonies of witnesses, verified observations, or the results of research.

Examples:

a. The sampaguita’s roots are used for medicinal purposes, such as an

anesthetic and a sedative.
b. Roses grow best in soil made of ¾ clay and ¼ sand and loam.

➢ These statements are facts because they can be directly verified by

experience or reliable research reports.

2. Statement of Opinion – It is a view or judgment formed about something, not

necessarily based on facts or knowledge. It is a personal belief or attitude about
something that isn't necessarily based on facts

Example:
a. The popularity of sampaguita flowers is most evident in places of worship.
b. The export of cut rose blooms can easily become one of the most lucrative
business in the Philippines.
➢ The above statements are opinions because they need to be verified. They
are based on an observation that needs to be proven by studies and
repeated observation.
3. Statement of Convention – It is a way in which something is done, similar to
traditions and norms. It depends on historical precedents, laws, rules, usage, and
customs. Thus, their truthfulness is verified by how commonly held definitions and
beliefs are interpreted.
They may sound factual due to their being derived from customs, but no
amount of observation or measurement will prove a statement of convention true.
Example:

a. The sampaguita belongs to the genus Jasminum of the family Oleaceae.

b. The rose belongs to the genus “Rosa” of the family “Rosaceae.”

➢ These statements are conventions because they are based on classification

system made up by scientists and are acceptable to the scientific
community.

4. Statement of Preference – It is based on personal choice; therefore, they are

subjective and cannot be objectively proven.
Example:

a. Sampaguitas are the most beautiful and most fragrant of all flowers.
b. Roses are more beautiful, smell sweeter, and easier to grow than any other
flower.

➢ These statements are preferences because they say a lot about the types of
flowers that the writer likes.

Lesson 2 Determining Textual Evidence

When you are formulating assertions about a text, it is important to support

your statements with textual evidences.

What is textual evidence?

Textual evidence is information gathered from the text that supports your
assertion or counterclaim about the text. It refers to any proof of an argument, a
claim, an assertion cited in the text which leads to a conclusion.

In expressing your judgement about the text,

1. First, state your idea about the text.
2. To determine evidence from the text, look for clues and keywords that support
your idea.
3. Quote or paraphrase the part of the text that helped you come up with your
idea.
4. Use quotation marks to quote a part of the text. If it is from a book, indicate
page number at the end of the sentence.
5. Lastly, express how the quotes supports your idea.

Why do you need to determine textual evidence?

The need to answer questions after reading a text or to share your ideas
enables you to go back to what you have read and give evidence from it to prove that
you are not just manufacturing your thoughts.
Often times, when you are asked about how nice a movie was, you need to cite
part or parts of the movie which could support your thoughts that was indeed a very
nice movie worthy to be watched. What you are doing is a textual evidence.
