Did not address the interconnectedness of the various goals with sectoral and inter-
country outcomes.
As a recap…
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
Are eight goals with measurable targets and clear deadlines for improving the lives of the
world's poorest people. To meet these goals and eradicate poverty, leaders of 189 countries
signed the historic millennium declaration at the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000. At
that time, eight goals that range from providing universal primary education to avoiding child and
maternal mortality were set with a target achievement date of 2015.
Goal 1: Eradicate extreme hunger and poverty
The programme areas targeted by this goal are the Children, food, security, and nutrition,
Culture and Development, and conflict prevention and peacebuilding
Goal 2: To achieve universal primary education
This is to to "ensure that by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike will be required to
complete a full course of primary schooling."
Goal 3: To promote gender equality and empower women
The programme areas targeted by this goal are the Gender equality and women’s
empowerment, Culture and Development and Conflict Prevention and Peace building
Goal 4: To reduce child mortality
This requires more rapid scale up of key effective, affordable interventions: care for newborns
and their mothers; infant and young child feeding; vaccines; prevention and case management
of pneumonia, diarrhea; malaria control; and prevention and care of HIV/AIDS.
Goal 5: To improve maternal health
It is considered as key to saving the lives of more than half a million women who die as a result
of complications from pregnancy and childbirth each year. Investing in better maternal health
not only improves a mother’s health and that of her family, but also increases the number of
women in the workforce and promotes the economic well-being of communities and countries.
Now, my friend Lawrence will continue the rest of the MDGs.
